Women authors
Are we limited to mentioning the well known and/or living women authors?
James L. Tiptree (pseudonym for Alice Sheldon), been dead for nearly 25 yrs., and mainly known for short stories or novella length work. However, The Women that Men Don't See and Houston, Houston, Do you Read? are classic texts in the history of SF (on the order of Nine Million Names of God and Flowers for Algernon).
Kate Wilhelm, married for many years to Damon Knight, wrote one of my favorite short stories, The Funeral collected in Again, Dangerous Visions. An author of significance.
Judith Merrill, died in the early 1990s, and Only a Mother, written in 1948 and collected in many places, is another of the classic SFnal texts.

Mary Stewart - though the first books of hers I read were mysteries, not fantasy
Ursula K. Le Guin
Marion Zimmer Bradley
Patricia McKillip
That's all I can think of right now.

Ursula LeGuin would be my no. 1..
Her Earthsea books are brilliant - unlike anything I've read. Always thought there's a social relevance to her work that all Donaaldson fans would appreciate.
Though first I gotta say I read her SciFi first. Nothing's quite stuck out for me as well as The Disposessed.. If anyone has any interest in society & politics than she's an author you can't go past.

I'm just beginning Dragonfly in Amber. I see Gabaldon rapidly becoming a favorite of mine as well.

I also just finished A String In the Harp by Nancy Bond and thought it very well written for a "young person's" fantasy.

In no particular order and definitely not complete:
Margaret Atwood - Oryx and Crake is one of my all-time favorite books.
Storm Constantine - Though I preferred The Chronicles of Magravandias to Wraeththu, which was also very good.
Tanya Huff - The Keeper trilogy - very light reading, but a lot of fun.
Jacqueline Carey
J. K. Rowling

...I almost put down Ayn Rand.
If I went back to the time when I was reading every single Star Trek novel that was published I could probably add a few more to the list... notably L. A. Graf, pseudonym of Julia Ecklar, best known for taking filk music mainstream... well, somewhat mainstream. I liked both of them before I found out they were the same person.
