Passing the Baton

Post by Endymion9 »

Does anyone else forget they are listening to Coldplay and not U2 when listening to Viva La Vida?

Made me think what other artists do I see as passing the baton in the past.

Kate Bush --> Tori Amos. When I heard Crucify Myself in a record store (yeah back in the day when there were record stores) I searched frantically thru the Kate Bush section looking for her new album, before a clerk told me it was Tori Amos.

Allman Brothers --> Lynyrd Skinnerd --> Black Crowes
The lineage of southern rock

Who do you see as passing the baton?

The Black Crowes aren't fit to carry either The Allman Brothers' or Skynyrd's jock straps (and both bands, more or less, are still touring).

Kate Bush is infinitely better than Tori Amos.

I think that was uncalled for Cail. The Crowes aren't bad at all, and I've seen both, pre-crash Lynryd Skynrd and The Allman Bros ('74) live.

It's a matter of taste. I think The Crowes suck, and there isn't a single song they've either written or played that will ever stand up the way classing A.B or Skynyrd has.

Glad you like them.

Gov't Mule is. They are actually the product of a combusted attempt to make an Allman Brothers revival.

And if anyone actually picked up new wave's baton, it was Radiohead. (REM passed the baton to themselves it seems :))

Their thing with Jimmy Page is the only thing I've heard them do that made me actually notice them....honestly, did they ever have a hit?

Heh, I just wikipedia'd them; their first cd had a few tracks I remember. But I can't say they took that early success anywhere further, unlike, say, the Allman Brothers or Lynyrd Skynyrd........

It's just a simple, clear, precise beauty to their songwriting and execution. OK Computer is a neat listen the first time, what's amazing is that you are still hearing new things and still being moved the 1000th time. They are sublime.

They are definitely a band that gets better the more chances you give them. You may not hear it at first, but there is actually King Crimson levels of rhythmic complexity in Let Down. (The second linked song). They just make such pretty music it's complexity doesn't jump out at you.

They never were suited for top 40. I find the songs of theirs that impress me the most are the ones you have to listen to and let the emotions build the entire song. A 20 second song clip tells you nothing about the song. Similar to XTC songs, although a totally different sound and genre.

Seeing Things
Oh Josephine
Sister Luck
Wiser Time
She Talks to Angels
How Much For Your Wings
Thorn in my Pride
Bring On, Bring On

Are some of my favs.

Nice assumption, but wrong. The Page thing wasn't bad (shame that Chris Robinson can't sing though). They're just not great, and certainly nowhere near the level of the Allman Brothers or Skynyrd.

Edit- Put it this way, comparing The Black Crowes to Skynyrd or The Allman Brothers is like comparing 'N Sync to CSN&Y. They both harmonize, and only one member saw any measure of solo success (which would make Justin Timberlake the new Neil Young).

I didn't compare them-you and Endymion did---I simply like them in their own right--I agree with you that they shouldn't be compared but your jockstrap and Justin Timberlake comments are simply uncalled for.

I never said anything about Justin Timberlake's jockstrap, but I can't say whether or not Endymion shares my restraint on that inflammatory subject!

(Yes, this is my way of saying 'quote the poster you're referring to!')

Joe Cocker passed the baton to Johnny Lang.

That's all I got.

Unless we start counting reformulations, like King Crimson -> Emerson, Lake, and Palmer -> Asia.

No, you're just being argumentative. In no way, shape, or form are The Black Crowes worthy to carry The Allman Brothers' jock straps. I said that was my opinion, and I stand by it. I said that analogy was about as appropriate and correct as 'N Sync and Justin Timberlake being anywhere near the same level as CSN&Y and Neil Young (an opinion I'd wager you agree with).

Now if you like, I can follow your lead and post something in another forum about your eagerness to argue, but I imagine you'd probably chastise me for that.

Edit- Joe Cocker isn't dead.

And that's the big issue I have with discussions like this.....Everyone we're talking about is still around. I doubt very much U2 is interested in passing a torch.

Sorry, my 20 second clip comment wasn't directed at you personally. Just something I've observed with them and XTC and also with Annie Lennox's Songs of Mass Destruction. Hated the clips then listened to the full songs and liked them.

I've never heard their effort with Jimmy Page. Which album is that?
