Nahhh, it's just that threads like this bring out strong responses from people. Insult Zeppelin and I'll go into spasms. Insult Neil Young and Danlo will have kittens. Insult The Smiths and Lord Mhoram will wish death on your family and friends.

People hold their music close to their hearts, so it's always dangerous territory critiquing anything.

I actually agree with that in many ways.

now see, i'd rather listen to the black crowes than skynard any day of the week.

call me crazy i think chris robinson can sing. course the black crowes didn't write FREEBIRD. a towering achievement in popular music if there ever was one!!

cail's right, it's personal taste and there's no accounting for it.

i always think in terms of the progression of the genre myself as far as "passing the baton" goes. in blues derivitive rock and roll, i haven't seen any progression since the 70's so-called "guitar" bands (hendrix, zep, cream, stones, etc.)
rather, what i hear most often is a copy of a copy of a copy, with the resolution degenerating into little that actually resembles blues derivitive rock and roll.

popular music, on the other hand, is simply that. popular. it is, in my opinion, into this category that most music most people listen to these days falls. god help us if rock polka becomes popular.

Red Rider, while a good band, wasn't fit to carry Pink Floyd's......ahhh, you get my point.
Porcupine Tree? (I'm kind of a fan)

I think he was a little more adamant about the Allman bros. comparison. I can't really stand Skynard myself, but the Allman bros. are frigging awesome.

Now, I probably wont get upset till I hear people trashing ZZ Top ;)

No, you're just being argumentative. In no way, shape, or form are The Black Crowes worthy to carry The Allman Brothers' jock straps. I said that was my opinion, and I stand by it. I said that analogy was about as appropriate and correct as 'N Sync and Justin Timberlake being anywhere near the same level as CSN&Y and Neil Young (an opinion I'd wager you agree with).

Now if you like, I can follow your lead and post something in another forum about your eagerness to argue, but I imagine you'd probably chastise me for that.

Edit- Joe Cocker isn't dead.

The Allman Brothers musicianship is on a different planet than The Black Crowes. I have seen The ABB 9 or 10 times both with Dickey Betts and without and those dudes can play. I have seen The Black Crowes once and while they did justice to their songs, they just didn't rip it up like The ABB. And for the record, no one should be made to carry Gregg Allman's jock strap, I mean just look at the guy there is bound to be something dangerous in there.

I call you crazy all the time, but I don't think it has anything to do with Chris Robinson....in fact, I'm amazed he was able to learn how to sing at all, being stuck on that island all those years.

See that's where I had a blind spot. I didn't think I was putting down any band. All of those in my passing the baton chains are bands I love to this day.

On some of the songs on their new album, they sound a helluva lot like Cheap Trick.

Really? My only exposure to them was one song on Dancing with the Stars. Tam's the addict here, don't ask me why I was watching... They were, actually, much better than I expected.

Of all the crap out there my daughter could be listening to, I'm quite pleased with the Brothers Jonas.

There was an attempt at this in the 80's.

Mixing hardcore with polka. It was a great experiment. Back when I was a dj, I'd play them occasionally.
In particular a song with the lyrics, "Who stole the keeshka? Let's go kick his ass." Yeah, this is the crap that thrills me. And why I like the gypsy punk of Gogol Bordello.
