Three-Winged Bird??

Post by sweetbread »

Hey all! I recently ordered a set of the First Chronicles again, all three original 1977 Hardcovers. Let's just call them, my Needful Things!!

So I've began re-reading the entire series. I just finished Vespers in Lord Foul's Bane. Let me begin by saying that I am reading things that I don't recall ever reading my first time through. I've got a pretty hefty post in the works involving some theories and thought that my re-read has inspired, but that is neither here nor there....

In the Council of the Lords, Prothall mentions a "Three-Winged Bird" in the list of wrongs that Thomas and Atirain encountered from Mithil Stonedown to Revelstone. When was this mentioned? Where did they encounter this? I've been trying to go very slowly and am taking my time so that each chapter has and greater understanding and impact altogether, but I do NOT remember Thomas seeing a bird with three wings.

Does anyone remember where this happened?

IIRC the Heers of Soaring Woodhelvin told TC and Atiaran about such a bird, but I don't think Covenant actually saw it.

Llaura welcomed Atiaran and Covenant into Soaring Woodhelven with these words:
In Lord Foul's Bane was wrote:"Well, I will not tire you with the full tale of the blighting wind which has blown over us from time to time from Gravin Threndor. I will not describe the angry storms, or show you the body of the three-winged bird that died atop our Woodhelven, or discuss the truth of the rumors of murder which have reached our ears. By the Seven! There are angry songs that should be sung-but I will not sing them now. This I will tell you: all servants of the Gray Slayer are not dead. It is our belief that a Raver has been among us."

That's kinda what I was thinking.....either Soaring Woodhelvin or Foamfollower both make sense (since birds often hang out in trees or by water).

You are correct. It is mentioned in the chapter Jehannum. My bad...

You can try book search sites such as www.bookfinder.com. I was able to find hardcover versions of the first chrons (albeit book club versions) through their search engine. I would like original hardcovers, though...

So would I. I have book club hardcovers that I found through eBay, so give that a try also.

Take a close look at that book club HB.
The 1977 SFBC edition of Stephen Donaldson's Lord Foul's Bane (code "H21" on page 403) is the true first edition, released prior to the Holt Rinehart Winston 1977 trade hardback, when the latter was delayed due to dust jacket production problems.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Hmmm... it occurs to me that a Three-winged bird would have some difficulty flying so it conjures and image of a very awkward creature. Unless the third wing sprouted from the top of its head just for show or something. :-)
