dAN and I are beginning work on a new cd and dAN laid down his bass track on the song "Taken" over the Thanksgiving holiday. The more I listen to it the more I enjoy it.
Since this is pretty much the first recognizable recording from the current effort I'm looking for opinions about the general sound, style and texture of the track before we move forward with re recording the drums, a couple of guitar tracks and adding vocals. Obviously the track has not been mastered.
Thanks for your feedback.

Nice work listened to it 3 or 4 times and was very impressed with the lead guitar rifts strong with a good melody , look forward to it with vocals on .Whoes the singer The final chorus was great really kicked ass but if you dont mind a little bit of a critic I wasnt taken by the last few end cords ie the way it finished and maybe you need to polish up the the quiet bit leading into the last chorus it just sound a little bit clucky , but overall it was great look forward to listening to more material.
A lie well told and told often enough,I'm damned if the truth will ever catch up with it!
I'm glad you liked it.
As to the issues the biggest one is that the final drum track needs to be recorded. That ought to tighten up some of the sloppiness and give the end riffs more cohesion. That dead spot just before the final chorus is supposed to have a little guitar riff that I took out temporarily to see what it was like with things quieted down with only clean guitar. I agree with you it DOES sound kind of clunky.
I do all the guitar tracks, dAN handles bass guitar, Jacques Levi is recording the drums. I'll be singing the lead with my wife Kimberlie singing backups.
We're all going to have great fun working on this.

I thought it was interesting. In terms of "general sound, style and texture," as you said, I really liked it. Reminded me a bit of Spock's Beard. Or maybe some other jazz fusion CD I can't place. The tempo seemed a little bit slow. Or maybe it was a lack of energy in general. But I really liked where it went, the area it explored. It definitely wasn't boring. You never know what you're going to hear when someone asks you to listen to one of their songs. This was surprisingly good.
Don't let Dan hear you say ANYTHING I wrote reminds you of Spock's Beard.
One thing I'm looking forward to is getting the real drum track recorded. What I'm using here is a generic I had lying around. It closely matched the structure of the song and generally had the same tempo. Our drummer is good at adding vibrant tones. Once that's done I'll re record all the guitar lines to fit. I'm guessing the energy level will jump then. And of course the vocals.
BTW I wrote this song just after 911 and it deals with that loss. Which may explain some of the somber tone.

Not bad. I liked it, and when it comes to music I'm not easy to please. Looking forward to hearing more.

I just listened to the track, thinking that there were vocals on it now (because of Cleburn's post). I see it's the same track I have at home. Yeah, it's too slow. Also, my part is extremely loose, and I'll definitely be redoing it (BTW Tom, I have a new pedal that should work well for recording). My goal was to conceive a bass line, record it, and polish it up later. Jacques is a much more interesting drummer than whoever Tom used on that track, too; this song will have more energy when it's done. If we end up keeping the bridge light, I'll come up with a fretless line to compliment Tom's meandering solo.I'm still concerned with the quality we'll be able to get out of our recordings, but Jacques has some sound people friends that might be able to help uds. Spock's Beard, eh, Malik? I don't think we're near their level, but thanks for the compliment!

I'm uncomfortable leaving the scratch track of 'Taken' as the only example of my playing in this thread, so here's a link to something a little more polished from a previous band of mine:
