Start school today....MS/Phd. I'm scared to death. My brain has been hibernating for 25 years and truthfully I have never been a brilliant student. I took a look at the syllabus and freaked. I thought a distance learning school would be easier somehow. But it has to happen. I have to find a way to have

a- an alternate source of income
b - work at home
c - escape from city government employ

So I am trying to get my license in psychotherapy. I figure the more this depression hits, the more people will need therapists (I know I do). So................$68,000 in loans  and I'm off to the races. Keep good thoughts for me, I need them.

Good luck! :)

I've heard that distance learning is actually tougher, in some respects, than going to a classroom. Kudos to you for taking this on.

Wishing you success, lorin!

I for one like the idea of distance learning, even though it may be held in disdain by "career" academics.

My sister just finished her masters this christmas. It was more demanding. But she had to do it...couldn't leave her job, house, and kids.
Because of the demand, though, she knows her field better.

Yikes, I know!!!!!!!I have been so so careful to locate something that has some credibility.......but it's still a little nerve wracking. But the state accepts the school I picked for licensure so maybe it's ok. I have to take 4000 hours total in clinical hours before I can take the exam. Feels impossible. I'm no einstein. If I had my way I would get my degree in creative writing or pottery or jewelry making........but reality bites.

thanks for the kind words!

Yeah, man, kudos. I got my BA a couple years ago... also on the 25-year plan. The first year I was home schooling my kids as well. I loved it, I actually enjoyed writing papers and going to classes (well, most of them). I loved being around 20-year olds again, they re-taught me how to dress, and being in a band, (a praise and worship band so it wasn't a bunch of stoners), and just the challenge. This fall I have to take one course and i actually wish I could do a full load and work on my MA. Enjoy!! It's hard but soooo worth it. :)

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I am scared, mostly because it is such a huge committment. But the thing that really scares me is in my heart of hearts I really want an MFA in writing. But the adult in me knows i have to support three kids, myself and a monster eating house. So I am frightened that I will not find the fortitude to complete these degrees because my heart is not in it.

On the other hand..........I am happy just to be out in the thinking world again, away from (at least part of the time) the welfare driven entitlement junkies I work with everyday. i sound so right wing but i'm not, just burned out.

University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. Sorry, I'm always used to that contraction, being a fan of their football team.

Good luck with the GRE and with your masters app, LF!

Batty interviewed yesterday at the University of Denver for their masters in library science program. She's supposed to hear back late this month or early April Good thoughts appreciated. :)

lorin, if nothing else, your crazy patients-to-be will give you fodder for your writing. ;)

Good luck lorin - I hope you get further than I did! I applied for a distance learning degree in Astronomy once upon a time. Paid the money and everything, then freaked out before it started, cancelled it, and got a refund (90% I think).
