I have been thinking this for some time. I have definite issues with CG used in movies. It would be hard if not impossible to do any of the series without CG. I just think most (not all) CG kills the soul of the movie. Think of something like The Dark Crystal movie, now imagine it with CG...
So, why not make an animated movie? I would think it would be ate up by any "anime" fans and such. It may not make as much money as a live action movie, but wow, wouldn't it be AWESOME!?
Why not animated?

I don't know if going the route of Anime, simply because Anime is linked in most people's minds with Hentai. I can't separate between the two, and I'm reviled by it thus. Perhaps that's a personal shortcoming.
I do think though that animation might be worthy--but it would have to be either stylized (CGI) or hand-drawn/painted. In the case of the former, I foresee a future not unlike to doleful response to Beowulf, but it allows for a great many visual possibilities.
In the case of a hand-drawn/painted feature film, it would retain authenticity, but care would have to be taken with the artistic direction to remain intellectual and resonant. When I considered this idea, immediately the animation from Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' came to me.

Personally, I think your "issues" with CG in film now is akin to "issues" with "talkies" or "in color" films if indeed such "issues" existed back then.
If the presence of a ring is enough to kill a live action movie, I don't see how pitching an animated version would fare any better.
