I like this! Is there only one way to do it or many? My was, the raft crosses the river 17 times.

17 is the shortest number of moves I know of. I liked the link I provided because getting to the test and starting it is almost a little IQ test in itself. I wonder how many people even found it! I solved it pretty quick the first time (3-4 min.), but I went back like 6 mos later and it threw me in a fit- I gave up. I felt like an idiot. Then I went back the next day and solved it in less than 1 minute. I'm glad you had fun.

[Edit: I decided to give it a go even after the "solution" was given. After trying, I realize that 17 isn't the solution; figuring out the correct sequence is the solution. It's a fun little puzzle. But once you realize that at each stage there is only one possible move that will allow you to get someone across on the next move, then all you have to do is run through the very limited possibilities to find that single possible move. Honestly, I don't think you could solve this with *more* than 17 moves, unless you just repeat your last move by reversing it after realizing it was a mistake. There is only one solution, I believe.

Also, I'm not sure what is meant by the suggestion that finding the puzzle is a sort of IQ test in itself. You scroll down and it has an arrow that points to the correct button and says, "click here to start."

I don't think anyone ever said anything about 17 being a solution, just the shortest number of moves. Since you don't start over unless you choose to, you can absulutely solve it in more than 17 moves. You just have to make those 17 at some point with a couple of them in order. Knowing it can be done in 17 moves is not beneficial if you've never tried it unless you wanted to break out a serious math word problem. [/quote]

Oh yeah, to address my assertion about finding the test: The thread had been viewed more than 90 times with no comments and it's a cool puzzle. Therefore, lots of people either didn't find it or didn't solve it. I find it hard to believe the latter. Also, when I was originally shown the puzzle, it was ALL in Japanese except for the instructions. There was not a friendly arrow pointing to the big round button. I didn't even notice they'd added the friendly arrow.

Read the rules, it made sense, and I did it first time. Then tried again and got completely stuck (and very frustrated!). Mulled it over that night in bed, realised where I'd gone wrong, came back to it next day and couldn't understand how I'd got stuck!
