Just to make this a not-so Anglo-American centric list, I'll suggest two absolute masterpieces by Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky:

Stalker
Solaris

And if you can manage to see La Jetee, you'll wonder why you ever bothered with the vastly inferior remake (12 Monkeys).

I just tried to watch the '84 Dune...got about five minutes in...wow is it truly horrendous. Dialogue is an absolute horror...can't watch any further.

Though I haven't watched it in a long time I've always liked Silent Running.

danlo mentioned Impostor which I seemed to enjoy more than it's big budget Philip K. Dick counterpart Minority Report.

Never seen Impostor, though I liked MR.

I just forced myself to watch the rest of Dune ('84)...some of the acting is great and the artistic ends of the film-the sets and most of the costumes-were wonderful, the rest was horrendous. My favorite character/part would have to be Paul's sister...love the way they portrayed her!

Dune 1984 is wonderful. However, I now prefer the miniseries.
