That could not be helped. Just as Covenant is the white gold, Linden is the Staff. Intimacy and use make it so.

I wouldn't doubt that Linden is headed in that direction at that point in the story, psychologically she is already addicted to the use of power. But for purposes of the events under Melenkurion Skyweir they wanted to make sure of it. Otherwise the hand stabbing becomes merely symbolical as it would then serve none of the Despiser's - nor the author's - purposes which came to fruition at the end of FR. Because even if Linden IS the SoL, she has little acquaintance with the use of such power, and besides the combined use of Earthpower and Wild Magic could possibly undo her at this stage. The stronger Linden becomes the more assured is LF's final victory, or at least ostensively so.

But there is a distinct difference between TC and Linden in terms of LF's strategy here. Whereas previously it was necessary to infect TC with the Venom, this is not necessary with Linden, she is already "infected" in a very important sense, considering her childhood past. All she needed was the a little motivation to use magic, and that comes through her strong psychological link to Jeremiah.
