"Drake," Roland called out. "Escort our new neonate out of my home."

The man Jonathan met at the door returned to the room. Roland then turned to look at Jonathan, flashing a smile which revealed his fangs. "You're mine, not Pyotr's. Remember that. You fail, I will ensure your name will shunned from everyone's lips. You may think you have our supposed leader's support, but sometimes things change . . . and I mean political changes."

He gave Jonathan a meaningful look.

"Don't worry Roland. I remember everything."

Moving towards the top of the stairs with Drake, Jonathan smiled at the room's other occupants. "It's been a pleasure to meet you all. I hope to see you all again soon." With that he turned, nodded to his escort, and strode downstairs, leaving the tattooed man to hurry after him.

Continued from Layson Street.

"Well, whatever they were, they had glowing green eyes and they followed me all the way from Albert's to Blitzkrieg."

"Dogs on Layson Street?" Mina asked, puzzled.

"No", replied Jonathan as he opened the car door. "People on Layson Street. People with glowing green eyes. People making threats."

Not wanting to keep the agent waiting, Jonathan stepped out of the car and closed the door behind him. He waited for Mina to join him and then stepped forward to meet the Carthian, getting close enough to have a quiet conversation, but not too close.

"Agent Rodden? It's a pleasure. I was hoping you could answer a few questions."

Mina and Jonathan approached a very well built male wearing a grey suit. Square jaw, suspicious, calculating eyes, buzz cut and clenched fists rounded an image of a solid, intimidating man. He stood completely still as the pair walked towards him, as though he had been cut from granite and placed in the middle of the dimly-lit carpark.

When they were not ten meters away from the figure, he crossed his arms over his barrel-like chest and addressed them with a surprisingly light voice. "I recognise you, Mina. Your companion was one of the neonates who stood on the stage in the Opera House. He must be Jonathan Belmont."

He listened to Jonathan ask the question. "Mina called me twenty minutes ago and said you wanted to speak with me. I'm busy, but I can spare five, ten minutes."

You're definitely not what I expected. Then again, I guess the occult isn't all silly little girls with too much eye makeup.

"Thanks for agreeing to meet me," Jonathan started. "I hope this doesn't end up being a waste of your time - I can't be sure that what happened wasn't entirely natural, but I don't know of any technology that could do what I saw."

"I hope so too," Rodden replied without humour.

Aware that the silence in the air was already a little uncomfortable, Jonathan beagn to tell his story.

"I visited Old Albert in the industrial district tonight to speak with one of his hackers. As she was looking for information on a local company for me when something wiped all the data she was in the process of retrieving from the database. One minute she was hacking her way through firewalls like a hot knife through butter, the next minute it was as if there wasn't even anything to hack.

"We figured it was some sort of new security software, so I took what little we'd managed to get and headed to Layson street. I was going to go home, but the son of the CEO of this company is known partier, and since I know the manager of Blitzkrieg, I thought I'd see what I else I could find out. I didn't want the night to go to waste."

Rodden remained silent and simply nodded, but Mina asked, "Did you find anything out?"

"Not much. The manager checked their network to see if the kid had logged in, and as soon as he did the power went out in the entire club."

"Does sound like any security software I've ever heard of," Rodden remarked, breaking his silence.

"No, and that's not all. Even though the power was off, some of the spot lights still seemed to be working. A cone of crimson light appeared on the dance floor and then moved quickly to the door, as if..."

"As if tracking someone running away," Mina finished.

"Exactly! But when I got out into the street there was nothing out-of-the-ordinary."

"Something would have to be pretty strange to be out-of-the-ordinary on Layson Street."

"True," Jonathan replied, studying the agent carefully. "But I know that part of town. I know what belongs, and what doesn't."

Is this a test, or is this guy always like this?

"Anyway, when got back inside the light was still there, just kinda hovering on the dance floor. I went and stood in it, but nothing happened. Then it moved again, this time to the office where we'd been checking the network."

"And was there anything in the office?" Rooden asked.

"No. Nothing. It was just how we left it."

Agent Rodden stood still and silent like a statue, then he breathed out a sigh. "In both instances Identity Corporation was being probed - indirectly and directly, via networks. Then, the systems - our systems -go down as though the company doesn't want anyone looking too deeply. This suggests that you have been facing electronic attacks, although of a unique kind given the second incident. If you want my opinion, it's dumb for this sort of thing to happen - kind of like an alarm system on someone's personal vault that lets everyone know you're being robbed, so people are thus all the more curious.

"The thing is, I do know a fair amount about Identity Corporation. And what I know might explain what's been happening. Might. Besides providing software for most companies along the East Coast, this group are also involved in artificial intelligence research. Among other things. Don't ask what else; it's sketchy and disturbing."

"Artificial intelligence? Fuck, that's a relief. For a moment I was worried some crazy creature was loose in the city. At least I know that networks are out-of-bounds from now on, as far as research into Identity Corp. goes anyway.

"One last thing though. What do you know about dogs with green eyes?"

The agent looked at Mina then back at Jonathan. "Dog's do not have . . ." He paused a moment. "I've been reading rumours that some Lupines survived Maxim's purges. If you have seen 'wolves' stay the hell away. The werewolves aren't normally our enemies; the Mikhailovs kept the peace for well over a century, but with the Circle in charge and the Vozhd on the loose, they would be rather pissed off with us."

"Staying away might not be an option anymore. After I left Old Albert's, I noticed what looked like big dogs with glowing green eyes watching me from an abandoned factory on the way to Layson Street. Later on, while I was waiting for a cab and texting Mina, a bunch of thugs with glowing green eyes all but knocked me into the street.

"One of them made a comment about my scent making me easy to track."

Rodden grunted. "Looks like the Lupines are back. Okay, watch yourself. I will inform Pyotr, or Roland. If they take it to that insane feminist we have for a leader, well that's their choice; not mine."

He turned to make a call with his mobile, but stopped midturn. He looked up. "What the?"

On a roof, almost level with the carpark and opposite the building, were three figures with binoculars watching the three vampires. One of them was talking into a phone, and another loading a rifle.

"Get down!" Jonathan hissed to Mina and Rodden as he hit the ground and crawled on his belly to the relative safety of the concrete rail. As he turned to look at his fellow Carthians he was pleased to see they had followed suit, and that Rodden was dialling a number on his cell.

There was no sound of a rifle shot. The night was empty save for the sound of sirens and car horns. Mina swore aloud and scampered over to her car. "C'mon, Johnny!" she hissed. At the same time, Rodden moved over to the far side in a crouch. He waved the two vampires away and then moved to one of the walls facing the other building.

Satisfied that Rodden was going to be able to report the Lupines return to someone, Jonathan, still crouched low, darted towards Mina's car. The passenger door was facing the three figures on the opposite building, so he moved around to the driver's side door.

"Anyone you recognise?" he asked his sire.

Mina shook her head. "No, which is concerning. Unknown enemies are the worst kind."

Unlocking the car, she opened the door and ushered him inside and over into the passenger's seat.

"Keep down til we get out of here Johhny!"

Mina screeched the car into reverse, and a bullets streaked through the air, hitting the walls of the carpark. Concrete dust exploded around them, but there was no sound of gunfire. The car quickly curved around, and it sped away as though it were a bullet racing through the warm night. She raced them down a ramp, and then down another two levels, and it a minute later - though it seemed as though an hour had passed - the car was entering the traffic and raced away.

"I think we made it, Jonny," she said with an attempt at humour though her face was serious and pale. "We will discuss all of this later, when we get you to my haven. The sun is due to rise in three hours, so let's just get home, okay?"
