Edge of Darkness

AKA, the new Mel Gibson film.

It's a remake of a BBC miniseries from the 80's, interestingly enough, directed by the same guy (Martin Campbell, who also directed Casino Royale). I haven't seen the mini, but based on the new movie, I will.

Gibson's always been an interesting onscreen presence, and as a guy in his 50s now, still has the toughness (if not the nimbleness) he's always had. I read a review of the film that compared him to Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, and I agree in that he's still got that quiet strength you don't want to mess with.

The story itself isn't bad. It's a relatively simple revenge story set within the world of the Boston P.D., a defense contractor, and a bunch of unethical people. It feels compressed, which I'm sure it is given the source material, but it still works as a 2 hour film. There's one "duhhhh" moment to the film that I was rolling my eyes over, but it's forgivable.

Gibson's performance is strong. Far better than Signs or the awful What Women Want. In fact, I don't think there's another actor who could have played the part as well as Gibson.

Hopefully people give it a chance, I think it's one of the better movies I've seen lately.

It will be interesting to see if movie goers will forgive, or have forgotten some of Mel's antics off camera. I for one wouldnt let it stop me from seeing the film. Ive liked most of his work, loved the Road Warrior, and luckily cant remember much of Bird On a Wire. Based on the several T.V. spots that I have seen on it, Ill wait nine months and then pick it up from Wally World.

One would hope so. There are very few people who have never said or done anything dumb when they were drunk. The man has made every mea culpa possible.
