Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.
Damn. Well, I guess now he knows if he's evil or divine.

Dio perfected what many people see as the template of hard rock lyricism – swords, sorcery, wizards in towers, men on silver mountains, kings to be killed. It wasn't subtle, but Dio communicated as clearly with fans who read Stephen R Donaldson and Frank Herbert epics as Morrissey did with those who were watching kitchen sink dramas. It made him easy to parody – our band at school, 25 years ago, had a song that began: "In a mystical time/ before reason and rhyme/ When the blood stained the axe and the fire," which was the result of too much time spent listening to the first Dio album, Holy Diver. Jack's Black Tenacious D acknowledged the same feelings – a mixture of mockery, affection and slightly ashamed admiration – 20 years later, with a song called, simply, Dio. [link]
Even though I never was a big Dio fan and I even though Ozzy is Sabbath, The Mob Rules is probably one of the greatest Heavy Metal albums of all times. RIP, RJD.
I was never really a fan but gladly will give him due credit for the following:
1. He made it to age 67 without succumbing to the “ailments” that normally take down musicians.
2. He gave full credit for his trademark “devil horns” hand sign to his grandmother. IIRC he said that she used that gesture to ward off the effects of the “evil eye”.
3. He kept his original metal hairdo despite his male pattern baldness. Some of the toupees in the metal music bizz are surprisingly awful.
On a (maybe morbid) sidenote: Scott Warren, Dio's last keyboarder was replacing the original keyboarder Josh Silver on their last tour fall 09. Peter Steele of Type O died April, 14. Now Dio is dead. Looks like there is some curse on Scott that makes all the singers he works with die ...

And where's Cail? I need someone to help me spam... er, cover a few pages on the favorite lyrics thread in tribute.
I only came back for this (and you Sorus).
I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Black Sabbath on the Mob Rules tour. I saw Dio solo twice. I'm currently kicking myself in the ass for not going to see Heaven and Hell last year.
"Stargazer" is such a brilliant song, bringing together two tremendous musicians (Blackmore and Dio) in an absolute orgy of power and fury. Basically, Dio-era Rainbow was about unparalleled for musicianship. The thing that really separated them though was Dio's operatic voice.
The last time I saw Dio was the "Last In Line" tour, which was in '85 or '86. He f*cking killed at that show.

I saw him when he was here on the Killing the Dragon tour.... one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Would have loved to have seen Rainbow or Sabbath in concert.
I think I'm still in shock. Don't usually feel this way, but his music was (and is) an important part of my life, and it's a very real sense of loss.
Oh, a change is coming, feel these doors now closing

Only time I saw live was that tour...and the title track is my second favorite metal tune of all time [why I quoted it sorta previously].

Agreed. I knew he was struggling with cancer, but everything I read made it sound like he was going to be fine.
It sucks that I've gotten to that age that my heroes are starting to pass.

He also had an awesome cameo in Tenacious D's The Pick of Destiny movie. Young JB's Dio poster on the back of his door comes to life and sings him a prophesy which sets him on his musical journey. Beautiful music. Beautiful voice.

I agree, Stone.
But I tried that with the Lena Horne thread, and not one comment has been posted saying a further good-bye or of appreciation to her, at this point. So, I figured better make the reason for the thread blatant.

I think you should thank me for not responding in that thread, considering she was a major babe and I usually just post hot pics of major babes when their name comes up......I'm a model of restraint, I am!
