For me Dancer in the Dark, starring Bjork has to be the saddext film I have ever see. Beautiful film, truly. Anyone else seen it?
The reality is in this head. Mine. I'm the projector at the planetarium, all the closed little universe visible in the circle of that stage is coming out of my mouth, eyes, and sometimes other orifices also.
No, but I've heard similar rave reviews from others...I'll have to check it out.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. Schindler's list and Saving Private Ryan were the only films to make my cry. Well, Bambi did too, but I was only 24 then. Bird cage and Bowfinger make me laugh until I cry, but that's another thing altogether.
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion
I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
a fate I don't deserve.

I wept all three times I saw Dead Poets Society, once vocally.
The first time I saw Ordinary People was in the company of a friend observing the first anniversary of his suicide attempt. Absolutely searing--a much-needed caamora for us both.
Schindler's List did not make me cry; it gave me a migraine!
Babette's Feast still brings tears of joy after 3-4 viewings.

Shared pain is lessened; shared joy is increased.

I have to say that Fearless gave me an entirely different reaction that I have never experienced before or since. I get very out of breath watching the plane crash scene. It's something that makes me wonder if I'm having a past life (or death) memory, as I don't get the weird panicky feeling I get watching that scene. I haven't ever had it during any other movie or tv series that depicts a plane crash, and neither have I had it with any film tragedy.

Life is a waste of time
Time is a waste of life
So get wasted all of the time
And you'll have the time of your life
The first 10 minutes of Up! were really sad.
There's a scene in The House of Sand and Fog when Ben Kingsley prays to Allah to spare his son's life that is absolutely heart wrenching. I ran from the room during that scene.
The Green Mile and A River Runs Through It both make me tear up.
I also tear up during the St. Crispin's Day scene during Henry V, but only the Branagh version.

Cry sad or cry happy? The first movie ending that pops into mind for cry happy is the ending of "Defending Your Life", and of course "It's a Wonderful Life". (Both flicks have "Life"...hmmm a theme...?) I am sentimental, too so can easily get teared up at happy moments; rarely at sad ones. Oh yes, Titanic. But then again, the very ending was a happy one.
Cowboy: Why you doin' this, Doc?
Doc Holliday: Because Wyatt Earp is my friend.
Cowboy: Friend? Hell, I got lots of friends.
Doc Holliday: ... I don't.

Unrelenting absolute dispair. Audibly and visually horrifying. The viewer is challenged from the beginning to explore just how much emotional devestation he/she can bear. I was tempted many times to bail while watching, even had to look away on more than one occassion, but the superb acting, stunning visuals, and simple human plot gave me enough courage to endure to the conclusion.
A very simple movie with an ending of defeat or redemption - Avoid spoilers!

By the grace of God Almighty, and the pressures of the market place, the human race has civilized itself. It's a miracle. RW
