There are some amazing songs in this list - some I'd completely forgotten about.

Cambo's post reminded me of a Nine Inch Nails song that used to churn me up completely. I love how the song progresses from the background to the foreground musically:

Parabola's great, but I once downloaded (probably one of 5 songs I've ever downloaded along with Young and Springsteen doing All Along the Watch Tower and Crimson's Starless and Bible Black) Sober live in Australia--now that song, and the bassline, tear me apart. 8)
fall far and well Pilots!

I'll steel from Cambo in the classifications:

Uplifting:
Don't Stop Me Now- Queen (which I'm also stealing from Cambo)
Synchronicity II - The Police
Speed - Atari Teenage Riot
Mr. E's Beautiful Blues - Eels

Down Buzz:
Oh My My - Jane Siberry (although this one is a bit of both - makes me cry, but builds me up)
This Woman's Work - Kate Bush
The Final Cut - Pink Floyd
Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis - Tom Waits
and last...fucking Puff The Magic Dragon - Peter, Paul and Mary

So get wasted all of the time
And you'll have the time of your life

Sober is indeed an amazing song. Such menace in that bassline. When I saw them live in 07, Serj Tankian from SOAD appeared and did a worldess vocal, murmers building slowly into full-throated screams. Gave me chills.

And "Right Where It Belongs" is very gut churning, but I don't think it beats the muted screaming in "I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally"
Thought he had it all but then they called his bluff/Found out that his skin just wasn't thick enough/Wanted to go back to how it was before/Thought he lost everything, then he lost a whole lot more

Are you by any chance in the UK? Abide with Me will stir, as will Men of Harlech, Jerusalem, God Save the Queen and Land of Hope and Glory. In fact pretty much the whole Last Night of the Proms things would count......

Epitaph by Crimso always raises goose bumps.

In addition there's Your Own Special Way (Genesis), Waiting for a Girl Like You (Foreigner) Babe (Styx) and curiously, Bright Eyes (Art Garfunkel). However, the evocativeness is far more about women, the memories of whom accompany those songs, than the songs themselves!
"Winston, if you were my husband I'd give you poison" ................ "Madam, if you were my wife I would drink it!"

"Terrorism is war by the poor, and war is terrorism by the rich"

"A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well."

"The opposite of pro-life isn't pro-death. Y'know?"

"What if the Hokey Cokey really is what its all about?"

As I said in my opening post, I could go on forever in this thread! An Austrialian band who no longer exists have written some amazing song - a band called George.

This one - Breathe in Now - send shivers down my spine. Katie Noonan's voice is sublime!

Her voice sours from around 2:45 and the song ends at 4 minutes... (I'm not sure why the video goes for 5:58...)
