I don't remember how long it took to make this, a long time, over a hundred hours. It was my first effort at wood carving and I taught myself how to do it as I went along. I made it at a very lonely time in my life, when I would just sit there alone watching TV and scratch at a piece of wood with a tiny chissel, a scalpel, a nail and a piece of sandpaper. Most of the learning process, for me, was trying to fix mistakes I was making. I gave up one time and started burning it with a cigarette lighter, intent on destroying it. I'd had enough. The burn marks made me look at it in a new way and I knew I could continue. I kept it a bit under finished rather than risk going too far with it. The process of carving is to add definition by removing substance.
