LOTR EE BR Release tomorrow

Post by Zarathustra »

Anyone picking up the Mother of All Blu-ray releases? Finally, the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition is coming to high def. Amazon dropped it from $119 to $70, and I had a gift card that brings it down to 50. Not bad, considering how much money I've already spent on these movies.

However, there is supposedly a problem with the first movie, FOTR. While everyone agrees that the detail and clarity are greater than any other release--even the Theatrical Blu-ray--apparently Jackson went back and redid the color grading, making the entire movie more green. Some like it, some don't. I've seen a few screen caps, and I'm generally positive. I never liked the color grading to begin with, especially the overly orange/red Rivendel scenes. Apparently, that's much improved. But there are some snow scenes that now look blue/green, and not white like they used to. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to judge the whole movie for myself.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited. I've watched these movies on DVD so many times between 2002-2005, I promised I'd wait until I got a HD and the Blu-ray to watch it again. Finally, 6 years later, I'm ready!

Now ... which beer to get?

Hells yeah, I plan to pick it up. Unfortunately, I've asked for it for my birthday, which means I'll be waiting until the end of July. Since it is all everything I've seen before, I'm not hopping up and down to have it in my mitts (otherwise I would have just bought it when it came out). But I definitely can't wait.

Okay, I take it back. I brought this up again to take advantage of the early sale price, and the wife gave the go ahead to pick it up now rather than wait for the price to zoom up. So it's ordered and on its way. Yippee yow!

I'm halfway through the trilogy, and holy Illuvatar does it look good!!! I've been having a blast watching it with my two sons. The 18-yr-old saw it when it first came out, so it's a bit of nostalgia for him. But the 10-yr-old has never seen it all the way through. Having him look at me with panic in his eyes as he asks, "Is Gandalf dead?!?" is priceless.

There are a couple scenes that are so powerful, I found myself breathless as if it was the first time I'd seen it. The horse chase during the flight to the ford, then Arwen's defiant stance, and her calling forth the river was just beautiful. I don't care if it wasn't written that way, it's one of the best scenes in the movie. And then of course the Balrog/Gandalf scene is just stunning. Even after hearing "you shall not pass" jokes for 10 years (Southpark, etc.), that scene still kicks me in the ass. Tiny old man facing off against giant fire-demon on splinter of rock ... WOW.

The green tint did bother me in some scenes, especially the Shire. It is also darker, so that it looks like you're viewing Hobbiton with green-tinted sunglasses on. Very annoying. But the rest of the movie was gorgeous, and I think the color changes were a huge improvement. I put the DVD in one player, and the Blu-ray in another (yes, I have two players hooked up to my TV in order to do A/B comparisons ... I'm weird like that) and the differences were dramatic. Not only was the Blu-ray much more detailed and crisp, but for scenes like Rivendell, the color changes simply transformed the movie. That one scene where Frodo walks out to the balcony and briefly pauses while the camera frames a wide shot of Rivendell [the scene I painted, some might remember] ... it has lost all that orange glow which previously washed out the intricate colors. It's a VAST improvement. It looks more like my painting now (which was done looking at a version of that scene printed on a LOTR calandar, before the digital color grading was added to the original release back in 2001).

Here, see for yourselves:

The second link is to a message board. Scroll down until you see the Frodo/Rivendell shot. It has the comparison between the EE Blu-ray and the Theatrical Edition Blu-ray. The difference between the former and the DVD will be even more pronounced, but this lets you get an idea, because the Theatrical Blu-ray contains the original color. Surprisingly, the EE Blu-ray has a shitload more detail than the Theatrical Blu-ray.

Ok, you are getting me all excited about getting the thing now. I've had a tv upgrade since the last time I watched it, and did plop in the DVD when I got a sound bar to replicate surround sound (because when Sauron goes pop at the beginning of FOTR is one of the best tests of sound subtlety in my opinion), I noticed how amazing it looked. So seeing it again with all the details will be pretty cool. And I'm feeling willing to go through all of the extras again, which I haven't done since they originally came out. As I passed on the theatrical bluray release, this will be a new experience. I now cannot wait.
