second of all: you're right about The Division Bell, still you're holding aMLoR up to pretty dam high standards.

As much as I like The Division Bell, I think there are far more songs on it (as compared to AMLoR) that sound like solo Gilmour rather than Pink Floyd.

Call it heresy, but with the exception of a handful of songs, I can't stand the vast majority of Floyd prior to DSotM, especially the Barrett stuff.

Meddle is the exception. It's a stellar album.

i like the period between Barrett and DSotM best - when they were willing to try most anything.

Agree with this, and I'll go so far to say that I only like "Arnold Layne."

while i prefer solo Syd to Floyd Syd they did an amazing bit of work together. Syd was also a very underated guitarist.

Interstellar Overdrive set the blueprint for much of their work for the next few years. an inventive piece.

Astronomy Domine is such a strong piece that Floyd picked up again for the Division Bell tour.

Lucifer Sam has been covered by others. (if you have a chance find Son Volt's version) including a local band i knew in New Hampshire.

and Bike has to be heard. a true psychedelic gem.

as to post syd and pre-DSotM... I offer

Corporal Clegg - Floyd's attempt to mimic Syd.
Point Me at the Sky - ditto
both songs a good lark nowadays and would benefit from the band trying them now. dumping the sillier parts and focusing on good music there.

Let There Be More Light : an underated song that has some great instrumental moments. the lyrics are mysterious enough.

Set the Controls... Roger dug it up for his DSotM tour. very atmospheric and the first really good song he wrote himself.

Green is the Colour : a beautiful song, very pastoral. love Roger's lyrics. very poetic. have heard many concert versions where they expanded it.

Red Queen Theme : an unreleased song. great guitar work by Dave. suitable lyrics by Roger. really wish there was an official release. find it on youtube or bootleg.

Give Birth to a Smile : Roger was doing the st for the Body when he called in the Floyd to play this underated gem. wish they had played it live. it is a great song.

Atom Heart Mother has moments. they should have finsihed it instead of letting Geesin do it. Dave has performed it recently with orchestra. very imporatant song in their progression to DSotM.

If : a great song. simple acoustic number with excellent Roger lyrics. fits his theme of DSotM and forward.

Fat Old Sun : I am so glad Dave decided to revisit this song. but the original guitar solo at the end is worth finding out. also very pastoral.

Summer of 68 : I like the song i like more than I should. Rick's work.

Biding My Time : the groove the band hits at the end is amazing. wish i had seen it live. someone needs to cover this.

fearless : criminally underated. love the guitar work and how it builds. a song about Syd.

echoes : catch the version on the Pompeii dvd. the guitar work before the middle break is hot. wish the Pompeii dvd had an official st cd release. lots of great stuff on there.

I will discuss Obscured By Clouds at length elsewhere.

"Bike" is a perfect example (to me) of how awful Pink Floyd was during that era.

I have to agree. VH1 has a series called "Classic Albums" and in one episode DSOTM was the topic. In an interview segment, Gilmour refers to the Barrett stuff as "psychedelic noodling." That's what comes to mind when I listen to anything pre-Meddle.

as i mentioned i prefer the barrett solo stuff to his floyd output. (save for jugband blues - a truly breathtaking song.)

but syd gave them the start and certainly the muse for so much fo their output later on.

I think David Gilmour is the only person who is a bigger fan of Syd's music than Sarge.
After being married for about a year, I bought Dennis a three disc Syd compliation. I hated it. I thought the songs were silly and void of any real talent. I have listened to that cd for about 16 years or so now and I never complain when he puts it on. I have also seen documentaries on Syd. I can tell you that after a while, you do pick up little genius nuances here and there. You do have a light bulb go on and you say to yourself: "This is what they hear".
There are different kinds of Pink Flyd fans. You have the David Gilmour group. Most women fall into this. He's soft spoken, writes of memory, love, nice things and plays the guitar like he's making love to it. Then there are the Roger fans. Roger's music was more angry, pissed off. Syd was more fantasy. I must say that I am surprised that more of you aren't Syd fans here, because of the fantasy element.
Syd will grow on you, given the chance. I used to be the safest, most pedestrian listener. Being married to Sarge has forced me waaaaaaaaay out of my comfort zone.
My favorites are...
Baby Lemonade
Elephant
Clowns and Jugglers
Dominoes
Astromony Domine
but most favorite is
I Really Love You.

Our grandson was five months old in a car seat on our kitchen table and there was Sarge sitting with him, singing I Really Love You to Zeke.

Just keep an open mind. You'd be surprised about what you'd hear after a few times. And remember, David plays Syd's stuff all the time. The guitar genius can't be wrong, right?

I don't care who likes Syd's stuff, nor do I think I need to listen to it more (the last 30 years cool with you?). I think it's rubbish. I think it's the acoustical blend of drugs and crazy, and I don't care for it a bit.

Nor will I insult his fans (or Roger's fans, or Dave's fans) by trying to pigeonhole them into neat little categories. You like what you like for your own reasons, as do I.

You do know that when you open a topic, that it is there for discussion and other opinions, right? I know you and probably most people in this great big world don't care about my opinion. Hell, people who know me, people who I actually like/love don't care about my opinion. But I thought what you wanted was a discussion and to expand your way of thinking when you started this thread. I was wrong. What you want is for me to agree with you and nothing more. Ok, Cail.
And BTW, pigeonholing or not, most women are Gilmour fans. He's dreamy;-)
and still sexy at 64+!!!
And my favorite Floyd album? Pulse.
Cause it's filled with Gilmour!!!

Syd Barrett is dead and didn't play on AMLoR. In fact, Pink Floyed fired him 43 years ago. I'm happy that you like him, but I don't really see what it has to do with AMLoR.

But hey, thanks for the education about how discussion forums work!

Geez Cail, she's married to null, and he's been forcing Syd, Husker Du, and God knows what else down her throat for the last 17+ years. Isn't that punishment enough?

And mrs null, you probably should peruse through the Album; you'll find Cail's every bit the dreamy stud Gilmour ever was!
