I think that sixties pop would be way too jarring in that setting. You could get the same dark feel and haunting textural beauty with some black (melodic) metal. Reference Agalloch or Opeth. Give them a listen and you won't be sorry.

I listened to some of the stuff on their myspace pages and it took me back to my days of Slayer, Venom, Anthrax..(Still Like Slayer) I could go on and on. After listening to those bands you mentioned..Opeth reminded me of Venom.. .. much mostly because of the Growling style of Singing, ..i think that would jar the hell out of people

Ok for me.. though I wish they could cut the Growl in half.... give it the sound Tom Araya Gave Slayer, not that i mind the Growl...or Gutteral Roar... Im just more a fan of the Primal Scream

if that makes sense...I like the guy from system of a downs Voice,(without the messed up confusing lyrics)

I liked the Musical style of Agalloch...long intros and some instrumentals only. I think they would actually go good with some of the scenes for sure...but I think it would be better without Lyrics at all..strictly Instrumental...No Lyrics unless taylor made for the TC movie. maybe even turn some of the poetry in the books to song.

I like some of Opeth but yeah, I am not much for the growling, myself. At least, not set to music.

Opeths instrumentals are more what I was thinking of, and the Agalloch of course.

Anyhow, to the point...

Composers like John Williams and Howard Shore, both mentioned before, are perfect choices for just about any fantasy creation. Can't help hearing sequences from the LOTR soundtracks (Complete Recordings versions) with my mind's ear when re-imagining certain parts of the 1st and 2nd chrons: The Last March of the Ents track for Foamfollower wading into bubbling lava, middle sections of The Lighting of the Beacons for the first sight of Revelstone in WGW, etc.

Some of my own picks:

Joseph LoDuca is an obscurer name, but his unconventional instruments wailing and scraping in the background of often discordant, rapidly changing melodies make rather effective audile images for Raver attacks and insane Sunbane growth or verdancy rotting and exploding into noisome gray sludge within seconds.

His music has the tendency to switch from corny synth slop to surreal horrorscapes that make one's skin crawl even within the same track. A good cross-section of his music style can be found for instance within this soundtrack (haven't seen the movie, though): www.youtube.com/user/UktenaWolf#g/u

Now excuses that I start gushing over the Giants for the gigazillionth time again, but I've recently re-listened to some Estonian metal bands and a couple of tracks on Metsatöll's recent album just fit quite well with their adventurous sea voyages. Moreover, I cracked up when I realized what the band had included in the official music video of the first song I had in mind (I don't often watch these, as they commonly have nothing to do with the lyrics themselves. Neither does this one, really. XD): scenes from a 30-year-old (highly stylized by Jüri Arrak) animated short telling the legend of Suur Tõll, the hero-giant of the isle of Saarenmaa. Note: this is no Disney or anime, but something made during the Soviet era.

At the beginning, he's building a massive stone construction with his wife Piret; the red devil-ish creature is his arch-enemy Vanatühi (lit. Old Empty).

Pioneer to the falls - interpol - epic sounding and haunting and ..the falls
fratres for string orchestra - Part - beautiful just beautiful
Weird fishes-Radiohead- just so haunting, beautiful and emotional

I listen to a lot of different music, while reading the Chrons as well, to name a few likely that feel most like that is hard.

I, too, have been envisioning the Chronicles with Shore's soundtrack. Although I don't match them up the same way.

One example.

Some other ones that I have seen (in some detail):
The Treason of Isengard: begin with the departure of the jeherrin, through the maze, then crossing Hotash Slay.
Twilight and Shadow: the Haruchai seduction by the merewives, their rescue, and then Linden breaking the spell.
Anduril: the arrival of Starfare's Gem at Coercri, with a hold full of rats at the end.

(In fact, the Gondor theme is pretty much now the Starfare's Gem theme for me. It's so nautical.)

I've always thought the music of Krzysztof Penderecki was well suited to this tale - "Symphony #3" and "To Deum" especially, but even his older and better known stuff would fit well in some places. "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima" seems well suited to the sunbane. It's darker, more somber stuff (much of it has appeared in the soundtracks to "The Shining" and "The Exorcist" to give you some idea).

Never heard of this stuff before. I may have metal about Norse and Estonian giants on my playlist as an obligatory part of the mythology retellings, but certainly not about those featured in TCTC.

This is my StarFare Gem music

This is the Starfare Gem leaving Home and making its way across the SunBirth Sea. I always imagine the calling to be Honninscrave shouting his orders. At 2.54 this seems to be the Gem floating along under a night sky with 3.27 as the Sun rises and sheds its light over the Dromond. And at 4.33 the see the coastland of the Land.

This next piece conjures up an altogether bleaker scene.

Imagine a white screen and as the music begins it clears to find the Gem battered and trapped in the ice, the Giants dejected and listless. They hold a meeting and Pitchwive becomes the center of attention
Pitchwives flute comes in at 2.33 and slowly they begin to recover. The repetitive beat now signifying the Giants working at various tasks. At about 5.00 they begin work on the sledges and at about 5.35 the party goes on the ice, ready to journey back to the Land. At 5.56 a red flag is hoisted up and at 6.13 the First salutes those on the Gem as they have found themselves again. At 7.10 an overhead camera slowly zooms out as the party leaves and it fades back to a white screen.

We all wit what a wide-eyed Wagner fanboi the author is...yet has anyone ever compared the various leitmotifs of the operas to the essences of the characters? For instance the hefty notes of Fafner and Fasolt's (giant brothers and the separate halves of Holt Fasner) theme cause images of Honninscrave and Seadreamer to flit across my mental canvas...

Maybe there are songs that would work better with slight lyrical changes. How about if the Dropkick Murphys would change one word in 'Shipping up to Boston' to make it 'Shipping up to Coercri'?
