It's a door to an alternate reality but I'm not that sure it should be opened. I applied via our national computer system for the opening at Sorus's store. I am going to call Manny tomorrow and tell him I did it and ask him if he meant it about the next opening being mine and if he says no then I'm going to ask him why not. I want that spot and I'm not taking no for an answer unless the answer is a better spot with more pay.
Next week starts the true beginning of "back to school" and madness ensues, hours are longer and that means that on Wed/Thurs when I close I won't be getting home until after midnight which sucks ass.

Now if I could just find a way to wear live bees as jewelry all the time.....

Hey I feel great!!! Raised my monitor 5 inches off the desk: now I, actually, enjoy reading stuff on the comp, I'm at eye-level, no more unconsciously slouching down to read off the glare. Gods my next and back fell better---I feel like Pirsig's son at the end of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance!!!
Miss my Grace too--she's in her 2nd day of 1st Grade--first week "line leader" kicking butt!!! She's signed up for ballet lessons with the National Dance Institute too! We even got RAIN here last night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!
YES!!

I am in the process of getting new flooring installed in my home. Today is tile placement. Tomorrow grouting. Saturday/Sunday hardwood floors everywhere. And hey, it only took 10yrs of promising to pull the trigger!
Thank goodness I'm not the one installing it. Otherwise it would take 6months and look like a 3rd grader's art project.
The tile is already looking good!

I love tile and wood. Have to admit, though, that tile can be freezing in the winter.DukkhaWaynhim wrote:I am in the process of getting new flooring installed in my home. Today is tile placement. I wouldn't miss wall-to-wall carpeting. Altho if landlords then insisted that tenants buy area rugs to cut down on noise -- that would suck. (I've had apartments with wood floors where the lease called for just that.
)
It's been one of those days. Dumped a whole bowl of cereal on the bedroom *wall-to-wall carpet* this morning (the pertinent elbow bumped into the door frame). Cleaning up the mess made me miss my usual bus. I checked Nextbus and determined that the next bus would make me *very* late, so I decided to drive. Got the car to the apartment complex driveway and here comes the bus, down the hill. Arrgh. I didn't have time to park the car again before the bus left, so I drove into work anyhow. Good news: it's August, so traffic was light, so I was more or less on time. Bad news: It cost me $19 to park in the building for the day. Arrgh.

I know how it is to feel depressed about your job, it's almost painful. There is a mentality that seems more and more pervasive these days......the worse you are at your job, the quicker you move up. There is a logic to that. If you are good people want to keep you under them and if you are bad people want to get rid of you. The easiest way to get rid of someone is to promote them and make them someone else's headache. My job is riddled with them. I am one they continually hold back. I know I am good at my job but they always tell me I am not cut out for the main office, I am more of a field person. (more like a field hand) In 16 years I have only had one promotion. But the truth is (and I will deny it to my death bed) they are probably right, I am not a politician.Sorus wrote: I'm... upset about various things that are going on at work, most of which I shouldn't be too specific on. I am up for review next week, and already know I (once again) will not be getting a raise. And I'm pretty severely depressed about that. Because I work really hard and I'm good at what I do, but it's a failure-only job - don't get noticed unless I make a mistake. I'm sick of feeling worthless. Tired of feeling like I'm failing at life. Don't know what the hell to do about it.
I would just suggest that since you are sure you will not get a good review, then go into the meeting and review THEM. Get it down in the record in case there comes a time you want to challenge their hiring/promoting decisions.

lorin, it is sad but true that uppity does not play as well in retail compared to government agencies. I suspect that Sorus would not be well served by an approach of going into here review meeting prepared to critique her management. She needs this job, and taking that tact might imperil that.

I am not saying be uppity, I am saying to put her concerns on the record. But in the end she is a mature woman and will make her own decisions.Savor Dam wrote:lorin, it is sad but true that uppity does not play as well in retail compared to government agencies. The short answer to all my problems is that I absolutely loathe every aspect of working in retail, and need to get out before I completely lose what remains of my self-respect and general will to live. The problem is that I have been trying to get out of retail for the past 11 years, and I seem to be a bit stuck. It would probably be easier if I still cared about things like politics and promotions - but I don't. My last job ruined all of that and a lot of other stuff besides. I could have sued the hell out of that company and I probably should have, but at the time my only thought was getting out.
I really don't know what to do. I've dedicated a lot of time to job hunting in the past year or so, and nothing has come through. Just got to keep on keeping on and try not to be too miserable in the interim, but gods, it is difficult sometimes.
Edit: Yes, reviewing the reviewers is a most attractive idea, but probably not in my best interest.

Sorus, I pray you find answers which give you fulfillment.
Jenn, I hope Manny comes through for you regarding the transfer. My gut is telling me you can help ease Sorus' frustration if you return to that store, at least a little.
sarge, I hope the first estimate was from a swindler, seeing an opportunity to take you for what he can. Was he licensed? If the plumbing can wait a little, perhaps you can submit to Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. For the trade-off of invasion of privacy, you'll at least get some free work, should they choose y'all. I'm still trying to convince my father-in-law to do so to get his three hurricane ravaged house in Central Florida repaired. He has no insurance on the house, and has done nothing to repair it in the years since those three storm paths intersected over his house in one summer. The mold and mildew growing in there now is terrible.
Any how...
Since Saturday I have been in Sarasota. We moved Beorn in to his new dorm room on Sunday and Monday. Hyperception went home with his dad Monday evening, whereas I stayed in case Beorn needed any help transitioning and because the director of Student Disability Services scheduled to meet with both of us this afternoon to discuss any needed accommodations once Beorn registers for classes with his adviser immediately after lunch.
Beorn's room is awesome, in my opinion. A bit stark, as he has no decorations, but then he never decorated his bedroom at home, either. He has some cash he can choose to spend on doing so, if he so chooses. However, I suspect should I see any personal touches to his room that they will be the influence of possible new relationships in his life. I hope to see evidence of such when we return for Family Weekend.
As far as the transition goes, I am proud to say so far I have not been needed. Beorn is really making an effort to go to all events and to reach out and introduce himself and attempt to make connections. As far as I know, he is still a loner and not yet walking around with a group. But at least he is not walking around with his head in a book, like he did throughout high school. In fact, he hasn't read any of the book he brought down from the library with him since he got out of the car on the way down. And not because it hasn't interested him; he's enjoying the first in The Book of the New Sun series. At least what he read of it so far.
Anyway, once we meet with the SDS director, Beorn and I will have a last dinner together. If Hillel has services tonight, we may go to that, but otherwise we will say our good byes and I will head back to my room and pack. I hope to hit the road about 7:00 am tomorrow, as I need to get the rental turned back in before noon and it is about a three hour drive. I want to leave myself leeway in case of rush hour back up or any other hold ups. So, I won't see Beorn tomorrow at all.
Thus comes a turn of the page in a new chapter...

Congrats, Menolly. It's a brave new world you're entering.
(I wondered where you were...)
When I dropped off Batty at school, after all the orientation programming was over, I was kind of hanging out in her dorm room while she was unpacking. She finally stopped, looked at me, and said something along the lines of, "You can leave now, you know."

Hope you feel better soon, Sarge.
I'm on a home improvement jag. My landlord said I could use any of his tools, so I borrowed the power sander for the shelves, various painting implements for the walls, and the 3-foot pickaxe in case of zombies.
The place came with a hideous couch, which takes up about half the room. I didn't want it, and have tried to come up with a diplomatic way of getting rid of it. After expressing concern that my cats might damage it, and that I could not afford a replacement, I was informed that it had belonged to some elderly neighbors and had been left on the street after they died. Making it both disgusting AND potentially haunted. But free. Do. Not. Want.
