Well I finally saw it and I have to say, that is one amazing film. I have a new respect for Mel Gibson which had been waning recently. My guess is it may not be historically accurate but the cinematography makes up for it. Very very violent but so well done. His interpretation of a Mayan city is very disturbing and beautiful in an awful way. It is unsympathetic and unrelenting. loved it. see it.

His ranting and his recent relationship disintegrations, all very public, have done a lot to tarnish his reputation. If you look past those--not that I condone his behavior, mind you, but if we look at only the movie-related part of him--then his directorial vision is quite polished.

I thought it was a great film, but possibly the bloodiest I had ever seen (mind you, I steer clear of "Saw"-type horror so probably not the bloodiest ever made). But it was a very good story, maybe a little over the top with , still quite satisfying.
And it was rather refreshing to see Mayan (or was it Incan?) culture portrayed un-prettified. From historical accounts I read in college, seems pretty spot-on.

I couldn't care any less about Gibson's personal life. The man is a gifted actor and a brilliant director. This was a fantastic movie.

With all of you on the talents of Mel Gibson. His portfolio of work both as actor and director is just too good to ignore. The rants are obviously a sign of a life in meltdown and cannot be used as a means of diminishing his prodigious talent. I would love to see him direct a film of the 'Boudicca' story which has all the elements for making a great cinematic experience and given his treatment of the William Wallace story in 'Braveheart', a task to which he would be well suited.
