Vampire: Dark Ages (Vienna) - Chapter 5: The University

It is the evening of April 13th, 1205. Day 25 of the lunar cycle, and so there is a half moon (waning) in the sky tonight. Except that the sky is overcast; the moon and stars cannot be seen. Without some source of light, it will be very difficult to see while outside (mystical powers not withstanding). Other than the overcast, the weather isn't expected to get worse for another day or so.

Lucretia wakes in her accustomed place, without sign of having been molested.

She thinks What a lovely night to herself. She should find her own spirit.

She gathers some heavy blankets and goes to the monastery. Maybe they have a horse she can borrow. A walk to the leper camp would be long.

[Jeez. Why don't I just start you in a Monastery thread? That's where you end up most of the time anyway.]

Lucretia arrives at the gates of the monastery, the bundle of heavy blankets making the long walk fairly awkward. The ghoul who opens the gates recognizes her and allows her in. He even offers to take the bundle from her, before saying that Lucien isn't present, and asking how he can help you.

"She could use some ass." She pauses. "Or an equine."

"She... oh, of course. Yourself. We have a few horses stabled here, other than for the visitors. I suppose the Master wouldn't mind if you borrowed one." The idea makes him uncomfortable, but he doesn't seem to press the point with a vampire. Especially one as other-worldly as Lucretia.

He shows her to the stables, and even helps her saddle one of the more docile horses present. "We use this one for when we needs to deliver something, more than for warfare. She's a quiet old thing, won't give you no trouble, miss."

Lucretia gets on and leaves, eventually sleeping for the day wrapped in her blanket, and again the next night, and finally makes it to the leper colony.

[She rides a nag and gets ridden by one. She posts. Be at peace lest the goat becomes a gelding.]

She needs to search for that which fetters the spirit to this realm. She goes to the spot where they chatted.

Summary of real-time session.

Lucretia is able to find the fetter that binds Constance to this world. It is a fine (for a peasant) hairbrush. She invites Constance to return with her, while brushing her ghostly hair with the brush. They walk off to Lucretia's hidey-hole, with Lucretia pantomiming holding the old woman's arm.

Once back in Vienna, she visits the jail where there is no ghost. Then she goes to the city walls, and wanders until she finds the ghost she'd sent there before. The ghost is standing against the crenelations, keeping watch with his living counterparts (who cannot see him).

Lucretia asks out loud if anything had been seen. Both the ghostly guard and a living one answer her, both saying nearly the same thing (without realizing that the other was speaking as well). Nothing much was going on, but there had been a huge [kevinswatch.ihugny.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=899571#899571]horrible noise[/url] earlier. Inside the city, it was. The guards all encourage her, being a noble woman and all, at night no less, to get herself to safety as it weren't safe these nights, even on the wall with guards to watch over her. Who knew what devilry was at foot, after all?

She makes her way towards where they'd pointed in town, trying to find a sign of the noise. There, she encounters mild scorching on the walls of the town, and she follows them around for several blocks until she finds two ghosts drinking from ghostly mugs.

She talks to them, and they share that they were drinking. Hadn't noticed the noise or the scorching at all. They say that some bar wench gave them the mead. Can't remember who. She was about this tall (hand indicates somewhere between very short and very tall), with very very dark blonde hair, of finest pale silk it was, longish... maybe to her chin, but longer... down to her hips in places. They think. Kind of thin, but also pleasantly plump. Can't quite recall her name, though. But it sure was good mead.

Lucretia asks some of the nearby living about where to find good mead. There are three such establishments. The third one she goes to has recently been bought out of all their stock. Lucretia notices from the man's description that she single-handedly walked in and carried off several heavy barrels. Clearly, she was using Obfuscate to mask herself, and the man simply forgot that there was anything unusual about a woman carrying off three times her weight in barrels. The man cannot recall exactly what she looked like, since it was dark and whatnot, but he's certain that her name started with an S.

Lucretia considers that the combination of Potence and Obfuscate points to a member of the Nosferatu clan. So, she leaves town to approach Gottfried to ask his opinion.

She makes it to the monastic order's fort and speaks with Gottfried. All of the other Nosferatu are out scouring the countryside for lupines, but he knows of no female nosferatu in town. Not that a male couldn't disguise himself as a female, easily. But none of them, as far as he knows, have interest in large quantities of mead. And all of the Nosferatu he knows of have taken on names starting with "Gott", as a sign of their humble faith.

Gottfried suggests that there are several other vampire clans who might also possess obfuscate, and increased strength can easily be achieved through the blood, for a short time. Perhaps even the lupines could be capable of such a feat of mesmeration, though he can't imagine they'd use it to buy mead instead of simply slaughtering the town.

In the end, his logic is that if there's no reasonable reason for someone to do something, especially involving Obfuscate, one should check with the Malkavians.

So, she takes herself back to town, where she goes to the home of Wisdom, the Primogen of the Malkavians in Vienna. [I really wish I'd recorded this part... I'm quite proud of how little sense I made as Wisdom. But, alas, you guys get only the summary.]

Lucretia asks if perhaps the lupines might have been involved. Wisdom says that Karola doesn't let them drink, so that's just silly. They're all good dogs, now. And of the bad dogs, none of them start with S. Well, one does, but that doesn't count. And only the virtuous can lure "S'not s'S" out, so it probably wasn't that one.

Since they were in the garden, Wisdom plucks a flower and offers it to Lucretia. Then takes it back and begins chewing on it. She seems to be having difficulty, because she wants to simultaneously chew on it and sniff it. She finally settles on chewing on the stem while sniffing the bloom. This makes her very happy.

She does confirm that there is no such Malkavian who exists whose name starts with S and has anything to do with mead or fire in the city.

Lucretia departs, returns to her haven, and brushes Constance's hair a bit before sleeping.
