Name That Book!
Correct guesser posts the next clue.
Bird-man comes to city haunted by bad dreams seeking mechanical wings to replace his own (cut off as punishment for a crime).

Oh Wow, so I get to do the next one.
OK. Set in the post first world war period, well off family from the south of England loses all its money and ends up in the north west with nothing but what they stand up in. The eldest child of the family, a girl, tells her story in 3 books. Any of the three book titles will do. A story of abject poverty and struggle, but somehow not depressing.
Clue: Liverpool
Edit: There are actually 4 books, not three!

I am playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order!

Got me too! Even Google isn't helping, although I did learn that Beryl Bainbridge is from there, which I didn't know before (I don't think I've ever read any of her books).I'm Murrin wrote:Totally stumped.
Your description of the books reminds me of Angela's Ashes which was so miserable (while also uplifting) that an aunt of mine who was young during the time when the books were set couldn't read them because they were too accurate

Oh dear, and I love those books.
Actually, if you search on "Liverpool" amongs books on Amazon all the titles are there. For another clue, the well know river in Liverpool is mentioned in one of the titles.

Got it!
Twopence To Cross The Mersey by Helen Forrester.
Can't say I've ever heard them or her. Probably not my cuppa tea (or an aspirin
)
My go now?
I'll stick with a fantasy one: its a series that starts with a coming-of-age young man with a natural gift for magic (no big surprise there
). This one is interesting because it begins on a sheep farm but the wool of the sheep is special because it can be woven into a cloth called nightsilk that can stop bullets and sword slashes. (If you don't know ask Linna, she's a big fan of this author.)
