Sarge - while I have enjoyed what you have posted so far, you really need to step up with the list. :)

Being a native Houstonian, this list fills me with pride. We really do have some awesome music in these parts.

Now if I could get Sarge to step on stage, we could add him to this list. :)

10) Mickey Newbury - She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye

Mickey Newbury was born Milton Sims Newbury Jr. in Houston Texas, May 19, 1940.

In 1968, Mickey saw huge success; three number one songs and one number five – across four different charts; Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) on the Pop/Rock chart by the First Edition, Sweet Memories on Easy Listening by Andy Williams, Time is a Thief on the R&B chart by Solomon Burke, and Here Comes the Rain Baby on the Country chart by Eddy Arnold. This feat has not been repeated.

this song resurrected Jerry Lee Lewis' career...

Jerry Lee Lewis - She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye

as to his feat in 1968...

Kenny Rogers & The First Edition - Just Dropped In

Andy Williams - Sweet Memories

Solomon Burke-Time Is a Thief

Roy Orbison - Here Comes the Rain Baby

(could not find the Eddy Arnold version of that last song. Gene Pitney does the whistle solo btw)

and now the man, Mickey Newbury himself...

She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye

American Trilogy

One night in Los Angeles, at a time of national distress over war and race issues in the U.S.A., Newbury spontaneously combined a southern anthem (written by a northerner, D.D. Emmett), a northern anthem (written by a southerner, William Steffe), and a third song that was originally a Jamaican slave song (All My Sorrows). and features Marie Rhines on violin. It came to be called An American Trilogy, and would be adopted by Elvis Presley as the centerpiece of his later concerts.

oddly enough I just researched Mickey this past weekend not knowing he was coming up in the list.

Cindy has been recorded by Elvis, Willie, Bob Wills, Emmylou and Ray Charles. (among many others.)

this song was co-written with Eddie Arnold in 1954, but was not a hit until 1962 when Ray Charles included it on his Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music.

at the time only the SDQ and Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs were including Tex Mex ingredients in the mix.

Augie Meyers is playing the Vox organ on this. he and lead singer Doug Sahm would later form the Texas Tornados.
