Camel

Post by danlo »

Camel has been one of my fav all time bands since 1974. I have suggested them, before, for TCTC movie soundtrack. This is an English band that grew up along with Pink Floyd and Yes but never really toured much--and didn't really seek the same level of popularity. I have a link to their site over at the Hangar that I'll bring over...they have a few clips that you can listen to. It's hard to describe them but if you throw all the bands listed below together, that about sums them up,

Reprinted from Earthblood's Music Heaume at Ahira's Hangar:

Tam and I were listening to Camel's Echoes ("Best of" double set) all weekend as we scraped and painted the bathroom--so intense, rocks so hard, fade to mellow, intricate, fantasy inspired, intelligent music. Every Fantasy fan needs this music in their home now! They were so far ahead of their time and Andy Latimer has to be one of the greatest guitarists of all time--like John Cippolina (of Quicksilver) one of the first true speed quitars-Gilmore learned from this man! But nobody knows them. You can feel the influence of or their influence on all these bands: Allman Bros, Alan Parsons Project, Yes, Pink Floyd, Rush, Procul Harum, Beatles, Supertramp, King Crimson, Doors, Genesis, Gentle Giant...the list goes on and on. I'm going to start a topic on Camel in Vespers at the Watch cause as a Rush fan and a bassist dAN must hear this group.

Let it be known that dAN has indeed listened to Camel, and that they are a progger's wet dream. I still like Rush the best, but that was never going to change anyway. Anyway, Camel is a lot like the Gabriel-led Genesis, which is one of my favourite bands ever! Camel rocks.

I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion

Well, prog is an abbreviation of progressive, so I assume a progger is a progressor...someone who makes progress... ;)

Tool, God Speed, You Black Emperor!, etc.

It wouldn't exactly be progressive if it had just stopped.

I think Radiohead is probably the most progressive band making it these days. Maybe. Not sure.

God, I need to get In The Court Of The Crimson King. Nothing like mellotron overkill.

Hmm . . . I'm not qualified to talk about Camel . . . What songs would you recommend for a beginner? I'll look 'em up for download on Kazaa and come back to you with an opinion then.

I would 1st go 2 the link I've provided and click on their jukebox for immediate (low quality) samples.

Here's a fairly good sampler:
Lady Fantasy (quaranteed to blow ur socks off)
Song Within a Song (my personal mantra)
Never Let Go
Unevensong (which should be played when approaching the Isle of TOT  )
Chord Change
Drafted
Freefall
West Berlin (closest they had to a top 20 in major European markets)
Ice
Sahara
And the entire Snowgoose movie soundtrack
fall far and well Pilots!

Lady Fantasy lyrics

Listen very carefully, my words are about to unfold
Concerning a lady I`ve seen but I never could hold
I can see by your smile,
Take a long while,
The words that come through,
I see that they`re true,
For she reminds me of you.

Don`t misunderstand me, it`s not always easy to say
The words in your head and your heart that you just can`t explain
I can see clearly,
A face in the sky,
Moon`s in your eye,
You`re passing me by.
Tell me the reason why.

I can see clearly,
A face in the sky,
Moon`s in your eye,
You`re passing me by.

(very intense break)

Saw you riding on a moon cloud,
Saw you walking on a whirlpool,
From the corner of my eye,
I saw you.

Saw you sitting on a sunbeam,
In the middle of my daydream,
Oh my Lady Fantasy,
I love you

(super intense break, unbelievable guitar)

Air Bourne lyrics

High flying diver, spread your wings
Flying high on a cloud
Born on the air, spiral around
So easy making circles
You never touch the ground

You see the sea, feel the sky
Don't know where you're going when you die
You don't, you don't know the answers
To what's in my mind
Riding on the wind and turning with the tide

Light takes you up, it brings you down
Change is the things that to me
Is chained to the frost, the wind and the rain
And everyone keeps staring up
You'll be back again

this song will leave you breathless-should be played in conjuction with Pink Floyd's Learning to Fly 8)

Song Within a Song lyrics

The sun has left the sky
Now you can close your eyes
Leave the world behind until tomorrow
The dream is like a song
It leads you on and on
The piper plays his tune so you must follow

So far beyond the sky
Not knowing how or why
You realize this feeling is forever
And though another day
May steal your dreams away
You and the song will always stay together
fall far and well Pilots!

Drafted lyrics

Nude's thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door. The
postman muttered something about wishing he could go too
and handed over a yellow envelope.
It was a command long overdue that called for healthy,
young men.
In reply to your request,
please find...
I hereby protest.
To the ways and means you use
you know...
I cannot refuse.
So I'll take this vow
of Loyalty.
Fight for the right,
You have said,
To be free.
When this time has run its course,
I must...
Live without remorse.
For the deeds I'm bound to do,
I know...
it's all the same to you.
But I won't forget
the memory...
Taking a life,
for a life...
to be free.
Nude's life revolved around orders. He found himself pushed
and pulled onto a crowded deck of uniformed figures who
shared the same expressionless faces. Loved ones stood
anxiously on the pier as the transport faded into separating mist.
Water and night seemed one. Nude was going to war...
Thunder cracked. Ramps hit the beach and countless boots
assaulted the shore. His heart pounding, Nude stumbled
headlong into the undergrowth in a desperate search for
refuge. Sheets of rain drenched the sunless forest as the skies
opened raging down on the tiny island. Panic-stricken, Nude
staggered forward and fell unconscious.
Raindrops spattered from the trees onto Nude's face.
Startled and confused, Nude listened in the humid silence; he
was alone and had no idea where he was. Worst of all, he didn't
know what had become of his Regiment.
The setting sun left Nude with the growing darkness of his
fears. He made camp and slept with dreams of a dawn rescue,
unaware that his Unit had already left the island. In wartime, one
less soldier is hardly noticeable.
Seasons turned with time. Nude had given up the search for his
Unit but continued to move through the jungle, bayonet poised,
as if a thousand eyes were upon him. Home was a cave in a
hidden lagoon with abundant vegetation and fresh springs. The
highest point of the island provided shelter from annual
monsoon floods and sanctuary for his soul.
His military duties consisted of a monthly visit to the
mountain top whereupon he ceremoniously croaked the
national anthem and fired one precious bullet into the air.
In the loneliness he endured, Nude found an inner strength
that flowed with the rhythm of instinct.

While my guitarist gently weeps. The studio version is much longer and better, but you'll get a some idea of the group here (perhaps the biggest drawback is no Andy Ward on drums...) www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrg_B1pCors
