"Take Me Back"
by Mindy Smith
As children we want to be loved
Children all know how to give love
It's stripped away
Little more day by day
And I lose myself in this big world
A piece of myself every day
I give so freely
It's hard to even notice a change
Oh come on
Take me back
Take me back to then
Let me see love again
We all hurt others for nothing
I can't find a reason at all
But hate is raging
And war comes so easy to men
Oh come on
Take me back
Take me back to then
Let me see love
And I'm so tired of the darkness
It's hard to kindle heat for the fire
But I know there is hope
For the hopeless
Oh come on
Take me back
Take me back to then
Let me see love again
As children we want to be loved
Children all know how to give love

She said Andy you're better than your past,
winked at me and drained her glass,
cross-legged on the barstool, like nobody sits anymore.
She said Andy you're taking me home,
but I knew she planned to sleep alone.
I'd carry her to bed and sweep up the hair from the floor
If I'd fucked her before she got sick
I'd never hear the end of it
she don't have the spirit for that now
We drink these drinks and laugh out loud,
bitch about the weekend crowd,
and try to ignore the elephant somehow
somehow
She said Andy you crack me up,
Seagrams in a coffee cup,
sharecropper eyes and her hair almost all gone.
When she was drunk she made cancer jokes,
she made up her own doctor's notes,
surrounded by her family, I saw that she was dying alone.
I'd sing her classic country songs
and she'd get high and sing along.
She don't have much voice to sing with now
We'd burn these joints in effegy,
cry about what we used to be,
and try to ignore the elephant somehow.
Somehow
I buried her a thousand times,
giving up my place in line,
but I don't give a damn about that now
There's one thing that's real clear to me,
no one dies with dignity.
We just try to ignore the elephant somehow.
We just try to ignore the elephant somehow.
We just try to ignore the elephant somehow.
Somehow.
Somehow
Jason Isbell - Elephant
Ramona, come closer
Shut softly your watery eyes
The pangs of your sadness
Will pass as your senses will rise
The flowers of the city
Though breathlike, get deathlike at times
And there's no use in tryin'
To deal with the dyin'
Though I cannot explain that in lines.
Your cracked country lips
I still wish to kiss
As to be by the strength of you skin
Your magnetic movements
Still capture the minutes I'm in
But it grieves my heart, love
To see you tryin' to be a part of
A world that just don't exist
It's all just a dream, babe
A vacuum, a scheme, babe
That sucks you into feelin' like this.
I can see that your head
Has been twisted and fed
With worthless foam from the mouth
I can tell you are torn
Between stayin' and returnin'
Back to the South
You've been fooled into thinking
That the finishin' end is at hand
Yet there's no one to beat you
No one to defeat you
'Cept the thoughts of yourself feeling bad
I've heard you say many times
That you're better 'n no one
And no one is better 'n you
If you really believe that
You know you have
Nothing to win and nothing to lose
From fixtures and forces and friends
Your sorrow does stem
That hype you and type you
Making you feel
That you gotta be just like them.
I'd forever talk to you
But soon my words
They would turn into a meaningless ring
For deep in my heart
I know there is no help I can bring
Everything passes
Everything changes
Just do what you think you should do
And someday, maybe
Who knows, baby
I'll come and be cryin' to you.

My Troubles
Andrew Greer
Choirs singing in the snow
Oh, joy to the world the Lord is coming
Choirs singing in the snow
Here come my troubles
Repeat the sounding joy
Tenor singing loud, and alto singing heavy
Repeat the sounding joy
Here come my troubles
Ringing through the night
Bells and drums and joy and might
Ringing through the night
My troubles
Far as the curse is found
They say he's digging for diamonds in the rubble
Far as the curse is found
My troubles
Sing the songs and ring the bells
Father, can you hear us?
Like the steeple, we're here on earth
Point to the heavens
Men as songs implore
Shining like the star that the wise men followed
Men as songs they quiet
My troubles
No more let sorrows groan
Hold the child and hear him crying
No more let sorrows groan those
My troubles
Sing the songs and ring the bells
Father, can you hear us?
Like the steeple, we're here on earth
Point to the heavens

"Apartment"
Young the Giant
After leaving my apartment
I feel this cold inside me
It howls away all through the market
It calls your name
Ooohh
Ooohh oohh
On my way to your apartment
I write for fear of silence
You carved a boat to sail my shadow
Now I walk alone
Ooohh
Ooohh oohh
Alright, alright
I hit the sidewalk and this is how it starts
Hide in a raincoat when things are falling apart
After leaving your apartment
I hear the coast by nightfall
So sure to keep you dreaming
You understood
Oh, I know you understood
Yes sir, it shows I was no good
Aaaahhh
Alright, alright
I hit the sidewalk and this is how it starts
Hide in a raincoat when things are falling apart
Cause sooner or later this is bound to stop
Come on, let's savor what we're falling for
After leaving your apartment
I hear the coast...

Not Perfect - Tim Minchin
This is my Earth
And I live in it
It's one third dirt and two thirds water
And it rotates and revolves through space
At rather an impressive pace
And never even messes up my hair
And here's the really weird thing
The force created by it's spin
Is the force that stops the chaos flooding in
This is my Earth
And it's fine
It's where I spend the vast majority of my time
It's not perfect, but it's mine
It's not perfect
This is my country
And I live in it
It's pretty big and nice to walk on
And the bloke who runs my country
Has built a demagoguery
And taught us to be fearful and boring
And the weirdest thing is that he is
Conservative of politics
But really rather radical of eyebrows
This is my country
And it's fine
It's where I spend a vast majority of my time
It's not perfect, but it's mine
It's not perfect
This is my house
And I live in it
It's made of cracks and photographs
We rent it off a guy who bought it from a guy
Who bought it from a guy
Whose granddad left it to him
And the weirdest thing is that this house
Has locks to keep the baddies out
But they're mostly used to lock ourselves in
This is my house
And it's fine
It's where I spend a vast majority of my time
It's not perfect, but it's mine
It's not perfect, but it's mine
This is my body
And I live in it
It's thirty-one and six months old
It's changed a lot since it was new
It's done stuff it wasn't built to do
I often try to fill it up with wine
And the weirdest thing about it is
I spend so much time hating it
But it never says a bad word about me
This is my body
And it's fine
It's where I spend a vast majority of my time
It's not perfect, but it's mine
It's not perfect
This is my brain
And I live in it
It's made of love and bad song lyrics
It's tucked away behind my eyes
Where all my screwed up thoughts can hide
Cause God forbid I hurt somebody
And the weird thing about a mind
Is that every answer that I find
Is the basis of a brand new cliché
This is my brain
And it's fine
It's where I spend a vast majority of my time
It's not perfect, but it's mine
It's not perfect, but it's mine
It's not perfect
I'm not quite sure I've worked out how to work it
It's not perfect, but it's mine
But it's mine
This is my Earth
And I live in it
It's one third dirt and two thirds water
And it rotates and revolves through space

People who like psychedelic type stuff might like this one.
I particularly love the line, 'there is no moon tonight, but the stars are whispering our names'
The Legendary Pink Dots - The saucers are coming
It's 6:30 p.m. on a cool spring evening.
I'm standing at the sink washing dishes and gazing through the window at a rolling red sky.
It's all a part of the daily ritual.
Once in awhile my attention wanders as the voice on the radio gives me new information.
Crises and wonders in unequal doses.
Some of it sinks in and some of it just sort of floats by...in one ear out the other.
A normal spring evening. The sort of evening where you're just happy to be alive.
Just happy to be standing here washing dishes.
THIS IS A NEWS FLASH.
REPORTS ARE REACHING US THAT A FORMATION OF APPROXIMATELY FIFTEEN FLYING SAUCERS CAN BE SEEN IN THE SKY OVER ST. IVES CORNWALL.
THE SPOKESMAN FOR THE MINISTRY OF DEFENSE HAS CONFIRMED IT CANNOT BE ASCERTAINED WHERE THEY COME FROM AND THAT THEY DEFINITELY ARE NOT WEATHER BALLOONS.
AS SOON AS WE KNOW MORE WE'LL TELL YOU ABOUT IT.
The saucers are coming.
The eyes of the world are upon you.
The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you.
IT'S 6:35 ON A CLEAR SPRING EVENING (it's 6:35 on a cool spring evening)
AND I'M STANDING IN A FIELD JUST OUTSIDE JAMESTOWN.
IT'S UNBELIEVABLE.
IMAGINE THE SKY IS LITERALLY COVERED BY FOUR GREEN AND SILVER DISCS.
(it's unbelievable. the sky is covered by four green and silver discs.)
THERE ARE PEOPLE CRYING IN DROVES
(some are reflecting orange in the sun that's setting)
THERE ARE OTHERS AROUND CAMPFIRES
(there are people crying in droves)
KEEPING WARM. AND THERE ARE CROWDS BEHIND ROPED OFF AREAS TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS.
(some people are sitting in tents and around campfires in some self-styled welcome committee)
SOME PEOPLE HAVE EVEN SET UP SOME SORT OF SELF-STYLED WELCOMING COMMITTEE AND BANNERS BEARING MANDELBROT SYMBOLS. (
there are crowds behind roped off areas taking photographs.)
IT'S INCREDIBLE. AND AS I SPEAK THE FIRST TANKS ARE ARRIVING.
(...self- styled welcoming committee and banners bearing the madelbrot symbols and as i speak the first tanks are arriving.)
AND NOW AS THE SUN TURNS ORANGE IN THE WESTERN SKY EACH OF THE SILVER DISCS IS CHANGING COLOR.
THERE ARE NOW HUNDREDS OF SETTING SUNS IN THE SKY.
(a lot of static and low voices)
...with green...
...photos being taken...
...now...
What else can I say?
Their green?
They haven't showed their faces yet
Haven't heard their voices yet.
They're there but they're inside. ??? ??? ??? comprehend ??? ??? ???
Come to me. I've been waiting so long.
I don't know who you are or what you are.
Whether you're our past or our future.
But I need you because I've waited long enough.
And the saucers fly through the open window.
They glide through my fingers.
They land on my chest.
They make knots in my hair.
And I'm open and expectant on my makeshift alter.
Prepared for what ever the new people will deliver.
I trust. Because what else should I do but trust.
What else should we do but trust.
THEY SHOULD TAKE THE TANKS BACK.
This is bigger than all of us so we may as well lay down and trust.
There is no moon tonight, but the stars are whispering our names.
There is no moon tonight, but the stars are whispering our names.
...??? ??? OUTSIDE OF OUR COMPREHENSION...
(completely outside their comprehension.)...
TRYING TO ??? ???. TRYING TO ???.
??? ??? EVERYWHERE ??? BUT SITTING ON TOP THEIR ???
(I think they're just sitting on the job. I think they are playing with our minds.)
??? ??? I DON'T THINK THEY EVEN CARE ABOUT THE PEOPLE.
[There is no moon tonight, but the stars are whispering our names.]
(i don't think they care about what the people think.)
WE MUST TRUST THEM. YOU MUST TRUST OUR JUDGMENT.
(Everywhere road to the west country is blocked with traffic.)
(how do we trust their judgment?)
(People are coming from all over the country.)
(but i don't think they've got anything under control.)
BUT WE'LL GET THERE. WE'LL GET THERE.
(yeah...they just don't get it.)
WE'LL GET THERE.
Oh thank christ.

Tom Waits at his most irreverent is great:
Well I got a bad liver and broken heart, yeah,
I drunk me a river since you tore me apart
And I don't have a drinking problem, 'cept when I can't get a drink
And I wish you'd a-known her, we were quite a pair,
She was sharp as a razor and soft as a prayer
So welcome to the continuing saga, she was my better half, and I was just a dog
And so here am I slumped, I've been chipped and I've been chumped on my stool
So buy this fool some spirits and libations, it's these railroad station bars
And all these conductors and porters, and I'm all out of quarters
And this epitaph is the aftermath, yeah I choose my path, hey, come on, Kath,
He's a lawyer, he ain't the one for ya
No, the moon ain't romantic, it's intimidating as hell,
And some guy's trying to sell me a watch
And so I'll meet you at the bottom of a bottle of bargain Scotch
I got me a bottle and a dream, it's so maudlin it seems,
You can name your poison, go on ahead and make some noise
I ain't sentimental, this ain't a purchase, it's a rental, and it's purgatory,
And hey, what's your story, well I don't even care
'Cause I got my own double-cross to bear
And I'll see your Red Label, and I'll raise you one more,
And you can pour me a cab, I just can't drink no more,
'Cause it don't douse the flames that are started by dames,
It ain't like asbestos
It don't do nothing but rest us assured,
And substantiate the rumors that you've heard
Well I got a bad liver and broken heart, yeah,
I drunk me a river since you tore me apart
And I don't have a drinking problem, 'cept when I can't get a drink
And I wish you'd a-known her, we were quite a pair,

I ain't sentimental, this ain't a purchase, it's a rental, and it's purgatory,
And hey, what's your story, well I don't even care
'Cause I got my own double-cross to bear
And I'll see your Red Label, and I'll raise you one more,
And you can pour me a cab, I just can't drink no more,
'Cause it don't douse the flames that are started by dames,
It ain't like asbestos
It don't do nothing but rest us assured,
And substantiate the rumors that you've heard

Know these feelings well. Knowing things have changed and not knowing how to "fix" it.
Mongrels by Joan Osborne
Whatever happened to this
it was an island of bliss
in this ridiculous place
But now the river runs black
and I don’t know the way back
I feel it going to waste
We are the mongrels
underneath the table
fighting for the leavings
tearing us to shreds
We are the mongrels
tearing up the floorboards
unaware of the banquet
up above our heads
I reach across the divide
I want to take you inside
but something’s holding me bound
There is a thorn in my side
that’s coming on like a tide
these tender feelings do drown
We are the mongrels
underneath the table
fighting for the leavings
tearing us to shreds
We are the mongrels
tearing up the floorboards
unaware of the banquet
up above our heads
This is a chance for the prize
it’s waiting here in my eyes
you hardly look at me now
With every beat of my heart
I want to make a new start
but I don’t seem to know how
We are the mongrels
underneath the table
fighting for the leavings
tearing us to shreds
We are the mongrels
rolling on the floorboards
unaware of the banquet
up above our heads

Down in the Park - Tubeway Army
Down in the park
Where the machmen
Meet the machines
And play 'Kill by numbers'
Down in the park
With a friend called 'Five'
I was in a car crash
Or was it the war
But I've never been
Quite the same
Little white lies
Like 'I was there'
Come to 'Zom Zoms'
A place to eat
Like it was built
In one day
You can watch the humans
Trying to run
Oh look
There's a rape machine
I'd go outside
If he'd look the other way
You wouldn't believe
The things they do
Down in the park
Where the chant is
'Death, death, death'
Until the sun cries morning
Down in the park
With friends of mine
We are not lovers
We are not romantics
'We are here to serve you'
A different face
But the words never change
Down in the park

Broke into the old apartment
This is where we used to live
Broken glass, broke and hungry
Broken hearts and broken bones
This is where we used to live
Why did you paint the walls?
Why did you clean the floor?
Why did you plaster over
The hole I punched in the door?
This is where we used to live
Why did you keep the mousetrap?
Why didn't you keep the dish rack?
These things used to be mine
I guess they still are, I want them back
Broke into the old apartment
Forty-two stairs from the street
Crooked landing, crooked landlord
Narrow lane way filled with crooks
This is where we used to live
Why did they pave the lawn?
Why did they change the lock?
Why did I have to break it
I only came here to talk
This is where we used to live
How is the neighbor downstairs?
How is her temper this year?
I turned up your TV
And stomped on the floor just for fun
Well, I know, we don't live here anymore
We bought an old house on the Danforth
She loves me and her body keeps me warm, I'm happy here
But this is where we used to live
Broke into the old apartment
Tore the phone out of the wall
Only memories, fading memories
Blending into dull tableaux
I want them back
I want them back
This is where we used to live
I want them back
This is where we used to live
I want them back
This is where we used to live

The right hand grips, the left hand slides. The pennies drop, the boxes glide.
It never stops. She worked the line blind. Folded, pushed... A pirhouette.
No thought, no joy, no regrets. A cigarette was hanging from a cord and every
Thousand boxed she'd suck her reward and find her island.
But the siren howled. The whip cracked and a pre-packed mountain pressed her neck. She'd switch to frantic, automatic.
Clear the decks. Turn on, tune in -- machine was humming ommm. Neon. Flashing laser blade was scratching OBEY!
No rest, no play. No time.
No rest, no play. No time.
She worked the line. The pay was fine. She'd find her island in July and find
A rock to sit on quietly humming ommmm.

Monsters, they eat
Your kind of meat
And they're moving as far as they can
And as fast as they can
Your kind of meat
And they're moving as far as they can
And as fast as they can
These words
Through the years of decay we walk like tigers in cages
With each passing turn the smaller and smaller the circles
Every weapon and word legitimate now as protection
But these things should never be spoken
These things should never be spoken
I stand undefeated alone in the ring just pacing
The sweat and the blood dried on my hands all wasted
I'm shouting "come back and fight for I am the king"
But the lights are all out and the people are gone
We always burned brightest when no one was watching
Now I kiss the lines on your beautiful face
But these things should never be spoken
These things should never be spoken
And sometimes your hunger for life seems like desperation
And when I read about the world these days all I can feel is hatred
The fortune teller is closing her doors
She looked into the crystal and saw nothing at all
They're waiting round here for something to happen
They won't really want it when it rolls out to greet them
But these things should never be spoken
These things should never be spoken

"Take Me To Church"
My lover's got humour
She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshipped her sooner
If the heavens ever did speak
She's the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
'We were born sick, ' you heard them say it
My Church offers no absolutes
She tells me, 'Worship in the bedroom.'
The only heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you—
I was born sick,
But I love it
Command me to be well
Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
Drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
No Masters or Kings
When the Ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am Human
Only then I am Clean
Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.
Take me to church

"American Dream Plan B"
Tom Petty
I’m gonna make my way through this world someday
I don’t care what nobody say
American dream, political scheme
I’m gonna find out for myself someday
But I’m half-lit, I can’t dance for shit
But I see what I want, I go after it
And my girl’s alright, treats me nice
Sayin’ nothin’ but a woman puts out that light
I got a dream I’m gonna fight til I get it
I got a dream I’m gonna fight til I get it right
Til I get it right
Oh well, my baby no doubt dreams further out
Makin’ moves to get us someway someday
Well my honey don’t trip, shoots from the hip
Tell me everything gonna be OK
Well, my mama so sad
Daddy’s just mad
‘Cause I ain't gonna have the chance he had
My success is anybody’s guess
But like a fool, I’m bettin’ on happiness

"Thinking Out Loud"
When your legs don't work like they used to before
And I can't sweep you off of your feet
Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love?
Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks?
And, darling, I will be loving you 'til we're 70
And, baby, my heart could still fall as hard at 23
And I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways
Maybe just the touch of a hand
Well, me—I fall in love with you every single day
And I just wanna tell you I am
So honey now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
I'm thinking out loud
That maybe we found love right where we are
When my hair's all but gone and my memory fades
And the crowds don't remember my name
When my hands don't play the strings the same way
I know you will still love me the same
'Cause honey your soul could never grow old, it's evergreen
And, baby, your smile's forever in my mind and memory
I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways
Maybe it's all part of a plan
Well, I'll just keep on making the same mistakes
Hoping that you'll understand
But, baby, now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
Thinking out loud
That maybe we found love right where we are
So, baby, now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Oh, darling, place your head on my beating heart
I'm thinking out loud
That maybe we found love right where we are
Oh, baby, we found love right where we are
And we found love right where we are

Such A Loser
Garfunkel and Oates
You didn’t do it, didn’t reach your goal
Your heart is broken, you’re an asshole
And you didn’t have what it takes
So here’s to you and your huge mistakes
You’re humiliated, hollowed out, and exhausted
You were in the ring fighting the fight, and you lost it
This isn’t your time, this wasn’t for you
At least you did everything you could do
You’re a loser, but a dreamer
You’re tired, but you’re strong
You’re going on no evidence
You don’t listen to common sense
You went all in, and you were wrong
You are such a loser
Good for you
It’s something that a lot of people can’t do
Trying is hard, that’s why people don’t do it
Losing is hard, they can’t make it through it
But not you
You are such a loser
You are such a loser
Here’s to you
‘Cause you deserve a cheering section too
Throw your heart in it, so what if you break it?
You know now that you’re strong enough to take it
Don’t let it break you, don’t let them break you
Fake it, keep going till you have a breakthrough
Icarus is bullshit, that’s why it’s called mythology
People can’t stand genius without an apology
Forget that, forget them, go get what you wanna get
Let them stay at home and comment on the internet
You’re a loser, but a dreamer
You’re tired, but you’re strong

Here’s to you
‘Cause you deserve a cheering section too
You can only fall that far
‘Cause you set yourself up so high
Who really cares if this time it didn’t fly?
At least you tried
At least you tried
At least you’re not that guy watching from the side
Who thinks he’s doing better ’cause he wasn’t defeated
When he’s just a non-entity who never competed
You’re the one who’s out there reaching for something greater
And you know
It’s better to be a loser
Than a spectator
And you are such a loser
You are such a loser
So here’s to you

Life is a waste of time
Time is a waste of life
So get wasted all of the time
And you'll have the time of your life
Sisters of Mercy: 1959
Living as an angel in the place that I was born
Living on air, living in heaven
Giving the lie down, the line to the
There's my heaven
And I know which way the wind blows in 1959
Which way the wind blows in 1959
And the wind blows still and the wind blows wild again
For a little child and never kill this clean this way
And it feels like me today
Tell me do you feel the same? Isabelle?
Or do you feel like 1959?
Do you feel like 1959?
And the wind blows wild again
And the wind blows wild
In 1959, in 59, Isabelle
Do you, do you fell the same?
Come with me, like a little child
Like another gun
Like homeless, restless, known to none
Like way beyond the line, like it never was in 1959

"Men and women range themselves into three classes or orders of intelligence; you can tell the lowest class by their habit of always talking about persons; the next by the fact that their habit is always to converse about things; the highest by their preference for the discussion of ideas." - Charles Stewart

Well we'd all go down
To our caverns underground
And in our backyard caves
We'd hear the sirens sound
And we took it very well
When then black rains fell
When the dust came down around us
We were safe and sound
It was baby needs shoes
The pta and barbeques
And it was two-handed touch
Out on the white house lawn
And we were nobody's fools
Fillin' in the swimming pools
We poured concrete and steel
When the neighbours had gone
Now we all live here together
Yes we all live here as one
Now we all share the comforts
Of a hole in the ground
And we all remember livin' in the sun
Here in the shelter
We heard nuclear freeze
We heard first-strike strategies
We heard how to pay the taxman
When the big one falls
We heard good guys and bad guys
We heard little lies and big lies
About who comes out the winners
And it's not that bad at all
When a madman gets a gun
He's gonna point it at someone
If it's up in texas tower
Or over there across the pond
And if you step on his pride
Or if he hurts somewhere inside
He might let one fly
When his nerves are gone
Now we all live here together
Yes we all live here as one
Now we all share the comforts
Of a hole in the ground
And we all remember livin' in the sun
Here in the shelter

Work will make you Free;
Four 'clock on a cold, wet winter morning
Tires screech to a halt
Footsteps pound up the stairs
Tthe door flies off it's hinges and it's your turn
Don't pack much, you won't need it
Hurry up now you'll miss your train.
Work will make you free, work will make you free
I was sitting there minding my own damn business
When a hammer on the door got me on my feet
There were men out in the landing, there were men out on the stairs
There men winding down into the street
They had on brown shirts, brown ties, black boots
Overside the leader stepped on up to me
He said I got a piece of paper here with your name on it
From the highest of authority
And he said work will make you free, work will make you free
Well I'm stuck out in a box car
Stranded out in nowhere, feels like I can hardly breathe
Well it's the middle of the winter and they gave me these pajamas
But I think I'm just about to freeze
They didn't give it any time I didn't get to pack up what was mine
Didn't tell nobody where I'd be, but your guess is as good as mine, but I bet
We're going where the sign says - work will make you free
They said work will make you free, work will make you free
Work, work will make you free
Work, work will make you free
They said work will make you free, work will make you free
Work, work will make you free
Work, work will make you free
And I said, will I ever play the violin again
And they said, yes you can still do that
A little night music out in the snow
Makes the hours go and go and go
And work will make you free
Are you ready girls?
Work, work will make you free
Work, work will make you free
Work, work will make you free
Work, work will make you free
They said work will make you free, work will make you free
Work, work will make you free
Work, work will make you free
If I didn't know where I was before, at least I know now...

Diorama - Cubed
Define your cube
And all you need in it
The items in your hoard
The dreams you can't afford
Define your cube, your long-term strategy
The actors your prepare
To join you in your solitaire
Your borderline
Your grounding
Do you want me in or do you want me out?
Your battle zone
Your territory
Do you want me in or do you want me out?
Frames to protect and frames to present
We keep on rotating through these golden cages
Frames to protect and frames to present
We keep on rotating through these golden cages
Under your sway demands are growing vast
Repletion takes you on
But this fight can't be won
Under your sway
"What" is turned to "how"
What you think is your intent
Is shaped by your environment
Your peer group
Your hedonism
Do you want me in or do you want me out?
Your waiting room
Your traveling circus
Do you want me in or do you want me out?
Frames to protect and frames to present
We keep on rotating through these golden cages
Frames to protect and frames to present
We keep on rotating through these golden cages
Now that vacuity has taken over
Now that we're lured into completely open space
Now that we are crawling back into our cubes
Now that we are crawling back into our cubes
Now that vacuity has taken over
Now that we're lured into completely open space
Now that we are crawling back into our cubes
Now that we are crawling back into our cubes
Do you want me in or do you want me out?

"Fumbling Towards Ecstasy"
by Sarah McLachlan
All the fear has left me now
I'm not frightened anymore
It's my heart that pounds beneath my flesh
it's my mouth that pushes out this breath
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
Companion to our demons
they will dance, and we will play
With chairs, candles, and cloth
making darkness in the day
It will be easy to look in or out
upstream or down without a thought
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
Peace in the struggle
to find peace
comfort on the way
to comfort
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
I won't fear love
I won't fear love...
