Harry Potter and Methods of Rationality

Post by SerScot »

Anyone else seen this? It seems like a cross between Harry Potter and the "Prince of Nothing" series:

YES, I'm enjoying it a lot!
(You're getting a response here one year after you posted.)
I just started reading it within the last few weeks, thanks to my hubby.
...Even though I haven't read HP.

I actually just looked in this sub-forum to see if anyone else had seen it!

The guy who writes it, "Less Wrong" / Eliezer Yudkowsky, is actually... a really brilliant academic who's concerned that people seldom practice rational methods of decision-making.

So "HP MOR" like an extended parable (I think?) to (hopefully) train its readers to be rational.
It's also hilarious, and pretty fun.
"People without hope not only don't write novels, but what is more to the point, they don't read them.
They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.
The way to despair is to refuse to have any kind of experience, and the novel, of course, is a way to have experience."
-Flannery O'Connor

"In spite of much that militates against quietness there are people who still read books. They are the people who keep me going."
-Elisabeth Elliot, Preface, "A Chance to Die: The Life and Legacy of Amy Carmichael"

I discovered this fanfic about a month ago and have been really enjoying it. Well written, obviously from someone who understands JKR's style. A great concept, with Harry coming to Hogwarts already firmly grounded in scientific methods and applying them to his training in magic. Wicked humor!

I have to confess that when I read this story, I hear Harry speaking in Beorn's voice...

Going to finally take a look at this. I finished Gravid and am caught up on my games and boards for now, so will see if this grabs me enough to fill my time to read, when I have it.

I can never remember what little blurbs at the start of a chapter in a story is called, but this one at the beginning of chapter 14 definitely caught my eye...

My reaction is the opposite..... "Nyooooooooo!"

Otoh, I have been a total slacker with the rationality studies/edutainment. :/
I think even my hubby is behind by a few episodes by now.

Are you folks all up to date?
