And yeah, Contact was good. Sphere was good... as a book. The movie was a waste of two hours of my life.

Syl your listing of Equilibrium intrigues me--I need to read your thread on it--is it in video stores? I couldn't get in2 Existenz at all--especially after the 1st 1/2 hour.

It's in video stores, but it might be hard to find. Yeah, Existenz had its flaws, but I'm a fan of that type of movie, so...

A few guilty pleasures I bought recently on dvd include Logan's Run (rough special effects in spots) TRON, and Outland

Blade Runner
Spirited Away
Contact
The Empire Strikes Back
Close Encounters
Alien
Akira
The Matrix
The Day The Earth Stood Still
The Abyss
Terminator
Star Wars - A New Hope
Star Trek 2 - Wrath of Khan
Event Horizon
Princess Mononoke
Pi
Buckaroo Banzai - Adventures across the 8th Dimension (notable for the incredible 80s clothes which, even on a faulty DVD player that only shows in black&white, just SCREAM bright, clashing colours! And for John Lithgow acting far more manic than Christopher Lloyd!)
The Thing (John Carpenter)
Star Trek 6 - The Undiscovered Country (overlooking the inept re-positioning of the "equipment for cataloging Gaseous Anomalies" from the Excelsior to the Enterprise)

But let us please all expunge from our memories the travesty and waste of celluloid space that is:
Spacehunter in 3D - Adventures in the Forbidden Zone! (with maybe the exception of Molly Ringwald... A few clips of her can be saved, purely as a warning to future generations...)

Oh Logan's Run and Tron! Not to mention Soylent Green!

Good call on Spirited Away, too.

Perhaps Frog Dreaming can fit into this category somehow.

Very good lists!! but no one mentioned Starship troopers!!

loved Donny Darko and 12 monkeys!!

Matrix ofcourse brilliant

All the terminator movies brilliant

All the alien movies brilliant .. the latter ones lost a little that the earlier aliens forged .. but still great imho.

I liked all the Star Wars movies .. I am probably the only person in the known world to like the prequels more than tne first 3! lol .. but i like the special effects on the prequels ..

I recently saw Minority Report believing it to be a great watch . and was actually pretty disappointed :( it wasnt as good as i'd expected iimo.

I like the Star Trek movies but some were not much more than extended episodes .. still i enjoyed watching them anyway ;)

5th element is a great flick ;)

Pitch Black was excellent!!

.. i recall reading the firt page of this thread and agreeing with danlo re: some movie but i cant remember what it was .. but whatever it was it was great!

i am sure theres more .. just cant think of em right now ;) lols

Hey, does "Being John Malkovich" rate as sci-fi? If it does, then I'd like to add it to my list

Yeah, I'd think so. At least as much as Pi, anyway.

Sphere was not all that bad. It was marvelously executed (especially for a book based film). It was done with real effort. I wouldn't say it was a waste of my time to watch it.

Logun's Run, on the other hand, was exceptionally bad in that it was cheesy...very very cheesy. One of the worst Sci-Fis I have ever seen.

I abhorred Sphere, mainly because it had nothing original in it. Logan's Run at least had an interesting premise. I'm a big fan of it.

Another one which I hated was, umm, can't remember name, Sam Neill on a spaceship, movie was named after the spaceship I think. I also hated Fifth Element.

They Live is a bit of a sci-fi, right?
