Could they possibly have done the brain removal if she'd been the driver? Perhaps to prove she was mentally incompetent to drive a vehicle due to some underlying cause (Alzheimers, Parkinsons, dementia?)

Ah well, I'm sure they thought it was a good idea at the time.
