I am Dennis' wife! I am still at work - they have not released us yet, although city hall is in a meeting right now, so I expect we will be released by noon.
Dennis has wanted me to join the board for some time now and I hesistated because ... well, you guys scared the holy heck out of me. Some of your discussions get pretty intense.
So, I'm here now.

Have just joined and hear an introduction is polite.
Stumbled upon the site quite by accident a while ago but it caught my interest. Have yet to read the Chronicles but have enjoyed the Reed Stephens novels which I am in the middle of and the short stories that have been done. After which the Gap series has been suggested as a 'must read' by a friend.
And since I work in libraries I am always interested in new books to read and authors to discuss. (even if I am a fussy reader)
I am pleasantly surprised by what I have read by Stephen Donaldson so far.

Anyway...shall now go wander off and explore a bit more...

It seems hinted at elsewhere, but I can't find anyone's theory that things are really going to go badly for the Land. Take this for example: Donaldson admits that he conceived of the ending of the Last Chronicles around the time he conceived of the ending of the Second Chronicles. Using that, look how the Second Chronicles ended; with the unspeakable...Covenant dying (in a sense). He had to surrender his life (and essentially give up his ring) to save the Land.
So what could top that? Destroy the Land to heal it? The ol' paradox in motion?

So what do you think? Ritual of Desecration? Or just a simple breaking of the Arch of Time?

Just pure speculation though.

Simple answer: Categories (genres) don't exist in themselves, they're constructs created to (supposedly) enable analysis/distinction (and which publicists use/misuse in attempting to promote books) but they are just as much a fantasy as the work. Science itself is simply a convenient distinction, a collection of things that do x under y conditions. (and even that is unbelievably complicated, and uncertain)
The thing that allows us to draw the distinctions is, I THINK, if the story tend toward a rational (or at least potentially rational) explanation, it's sf, if the explanation (if there even is any) is ir-, non-, or a-rational, it's fantasy.
That in itself is a categorization, and therefore false, but (like science) useful in it's limited sense. (the same is true for religion, flip side). SRD made a useful distinction...but as other's have pointed out, many "genre" books cross the lines. (he also made a mistake saying science was based on conscensus..it is not. If it is REALLY science, then if I'm right, I'm right, no matter who says I'm wrong...think Galileo) And SRD has many time said his main concerns are (my paraphrasing) the internal integrity of the characters and stories.
Personal idea: science fiction (especially hard) is simply a sub-genre of fantasy...it pretends the universe is rational even if the people aren't. {sf is REductive, tending towards explanation, fantasy Constructive, tending towards multiplicity}...not criticism, I like both kinds (or, especially, a salad with both, and other ingredients, too)

Earlier people were debating meaning/readers interpretaion/authors intentions etc. My take...none is final arbiter, none is permanent. Depending on the work, some thing are (nearly) provably false (the opposite of science) but no one is true, because the meaning is a cooperative construction between readers and writer, and constantly evolving/changing/interacting {there are dozens, maybe hundreds of interesting, supportable interpretations of "Romeo and Juliet" but it is absolutely NOT about the French Revolution, or a billion other things.}
Am I babbling? Are these dead issues? Sorry...I just got excited. And this is all shorthand, leaves lots of things out. I really do wish I'd been here years ago.

Ah, I have good timing. Blood in the greeting already, probably more interesting things ahead? And it is quite relevant to the Chronicles, and even not na-Mhoram foremostly.

Vampires are only a simplest sample of someone using blood as a source of energy - the first one many people will come up with. Remembering na-Mhoram from the Chronicles is certainly more interesting, but actually he neither started nor shaped this way of using blood. And now I hardly even have to say aloud who did, as well as state the fact it apparently works even on the Internet, though perhaps on more complex principles. I could write more on that, but then, it can be a topic that hardly ends anywhere, so you can count I just said the nessesary "hello" in the new members forum. If it doesn't count - well... hello.

And apparently the habit to make fast presumptions is contagious, since the Kevin's Watch clearly has the most impressive case - the same its namer Kevin had - assuming anyone is a Servant of the Land by default

And a mighty fine job he did of it....especially from my perspective. Also, I think it's safe to let the cat out of the bag and officially announce that yes, SRD will be the guest expert in the final episode of FBH. Well, he already bought his plane tickets anyway.....

I think this is as close to my first post as I can find. It was posted the second day of me joining the watch and I know I did a bunch of lurking the day I signed on. There might be an earlier one in the summonsing but meh, that's good enough.

Hello to everyone! Glad to finally be here after so many of you have been so kind to us at the Fantasy Bedtime Hour. Looking forward to joining in some discussions and reading some great posts. I have had a great time reading all that I have read so far in here. This site RULES!!!

I guess we are supposed to tell a little about ourselves in here so here goes. I live in San Francisco. By day I run an auto repair shop and by night I make a parody show about Lord Foul's Bane. I am 37 (very soon to be 38 ) divorced and my only child is a tiny chihuahua named Moose. Is that enough info?

Hail Watchers!

After a lengthy period of only reading what what posted in these fora (not to use the "L" word to describe my activities...), I've finally chosen a name and joined the community.

SRD had been one of my favorite authors for close to thirty years, and I think I've read all his published works.

Eagerly waiting for more!

I know that this post is up here a while but I am new to the forum and I just wanted to say that your post made me register so I could express my gratitude for the generosity of your offering. It is exactly what I would hope to read in a scholarly yet vibrant book about the Chronicles. The kind of book that I would buy immediately if I saw it. A book by a scholar and a lover of Covenant and the Land.

This site is a beacon of light on the net. A necessary corrective to Ironic Mode. You do credit to yourself and all the rest who make this site what it is.

Hi Everyone,

I thought I'd better write a quick note to say gday - I joined over a year ago, but this is my 1st post. I might even build the courage to contribute to a discussion or 2 down the track!

I certainly find the forum an interesting read - as well as the GI.

I don't want to write too large an opening post, but briefly, I discovered Covenant 1 & 2 around the time White Gold Wielder was released as so had the pleasure of reading the first 6 books in succession. I had never previously read a series of books with such intensity of emotion - amazing! Then I discovered the Gap series, which IMO takes intensity to a new level...
