Once you get around the pronounciation, they're pretty good.

All right people. I fess up. I have done a complete 180 on this. Somehow I just never got the very intentional nature of the names. I don't tend to read interviews of authors, actors, filmakers, etc, very much (having been scarred for life with the disappointment at some of them) but the few things I've learned here about the choices SRD makes with names totally changed my mind. In fact when I'm done with FR I will have to start all over again.

I still am not crazy about "Drool Rockworm" but I get why SRD chose such names in the first place so I'm okay with that. My objections to the Ravers' names are answered most satisfactorily. And he seems to have gotten away from the more obvious names, the ones in FR are very...condign.

So a big apology to SRD, whose eyebrows I do not deserve to shave off, ever. In fact he is invited to do so to me if we ever meet in this life. :D

Deer, if that is you in the avatar picture, you had better hope Mr. Donaldson does not read this and seek you out. You'd look mighty Nom-ish with no eyebrows. 8O

agreed.. I think i liked all the names even including drool rockworm. After all drool wasnt the most intelligent of creatures, most likely that name was not given to him by his mother and father, Foul probably named him that to amuse himself while he trained him to use the staff . Soulcrusher aka Fangthane aka A-Jeroth aka Lord Foul...he had many names..lord foul was just one given to him after his infiltration of the lords council was discovered.

what im surprised about is we never learned one Urvile Name through the first two series..not sure about the final ..ive only read runes so far. at least the urvile at the end of WGW barking into a pool of ebony in vindication of their creation vain should have been named. :D WAIT...NM...there is one urvile name and i just name it..VAIN heh.

and LOL at the want to shave off SRDs eyebrows part of the poll..
You must be naive or Vain (or in VA or in a van) if you think the ur-Viles would reveal an actual name! ;)

I do apologize if this post exists elsewhere; I got thousands of hits in Search, and didn't have time to read them all. Names are important to the Giants. They like long names: Gossamer Glowlimm, Sparlimb Keelsetter, Wavenhair Haleall, Heft Galewrath, Saltheart Foamfollower, Cable Seadreamer, Brow Gnarlfist, I could go on. Why does Pitchwife not merit a name? Pitchwiving is his TRADE, not his name. They never mention his name. And this one really has me wondering: why were the names of the triplets born to Wavenhair and Sparlimb NEVER mentioned? If it was so joyous to the Giants to have a multiple birth, why were their names not mentioned even ONCE? You'd think Foamy would, during his relation of this glad event to the Lords of Revelstone, just burst into Giant-stories about their names and heritage, but he never says their names once. They are always only referred to as their Raver names. That HURTS. Here's another one: Covenant is never Thomas in the Land. He is always Covenant, even to his lover. Linden, however, is only Dr. Avery to Berenford. The Giants use last names or titles. They never once called Linden by her first name. But I do remember the First trying to get TC's attention during a crisis and she yelled out "Covenant!" So why do we know the names of the parents of the triplets, but not the triplets themselves? It kind of bothers me that Pitchwife has no name. Is that indicative of his humility or something, that he even prefers his own Giantish name to be of no importance in relation to his vocation? He names the First's given named on more than one occasion, but she never names his. Just a thought. Any thoughts?

I adore the Giant names, actually.

Honestly I never once had a problem with any of the names in the chrons......except Kevin. Jeffery Landwaster seems to fit pretty good too. Donald, Jim Bob, John Boy. :-) Kevin seems so starkly normal it calls attention to itself.

Okay if you are going to stick with that name how about Kevyn, Or Chevyn?

Rusmeister, I re-read my post and I didn't say anything about Huey, Louie, and Dewey being Donald's sons. Do you rave? :P

Actually, changing the spelling ... Kevyn, Kevvin, Kevinn, etc ... would have done quite a bit to keep the name from standing out like that. Great idea!

hehe...Kevin works for me..at least now im not going to find out it is pronounced Kievan or Chievan or Kavine. LOL Jeffery landwaster definately doesnt work. I guess he could have called him Kevinscion but i think he was trying not to give everything a Mysterious Gandolphy billbo baginsy name. He had to have a Tom and a Kevin in there somewhere....or maybe we find out Damelon or Loric really came from or visited our world, trying to help someone named Kevin, which would validate his name for me..now that would be great if it were the case..but i guess we gotta wait. :D
