Thanks for the second vote on Soundgarden, Danlo. I saw them live on their last tour. The acoustic version of "Black Hole Sun" was beautiful and surprising. Their music was really euphoric. I think I saw god once in '96, tripping on shrooms, listening to their last album over and over. 
I'm not a big fan of Audioslave--they just aren't as original as Soundgarden. I compare it to the difference between Tool and A Perfect Circle (or "Tool Lite" as my wife calls them).
It's sad that Chris's voice is shredded nowadays. I suppose all that RJD screaming finally did in his vocal chords.
Okay, back to bad songs: can I put Stairway to Heaven on the list without getting booed out of Vespers?

I agree I've tried to like Audioslave (and may have started a thread on them either here or at the Hangar) I think one in three songs are pretty good-Chris has a hard time expressing himself when he's not on drugs 
Considering all the music I had as a HS sophomore in '71 was the radio and all they ever played was Stewart's Maggie May and Stairway to Heaven I concur--maybe not necessarily a bad song but overrated and WAY overplayed. I really can't STAND the version where Plant says, "...does anybody remember laughter?" Maybe philosophically compelling but as emo: puke!

Stairway's way overplayed, but it's still an amazing song. It's like Freebird or Don't Fear (the) Reaper. They're all good songs, I just only need to hear them about once a month or so.

Especially that egocentric and opportunistic "We need peace in LA" song he released within about 12 hours after the Rodney King riots.

Danlo, I had to laugh when I read the "does anybody remember laughter?" My old college band had a guy on guitar/vocals who thought he was Jimmy Page and Robert Plant all rolled up in one purle velvet smoking jacket. He had the obligatory Les Paul, and would imitate Plant's mannerisms. When we covered Stairway, he'd always throw that line in there. I'm not sure if he was joking or not, but it made me cringe.

There are a lot of songs I don't like for whatever reason but as far as one's that really get on my nerves and gauranty a radio dial switch, these pop immediately into mind......
Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder - Ebony and Ivory. Nothing wrong with the message but the messenger(s) needed to be shot!
Aerosmith's I Don't Want to Miss A Thing. Too bad they didn't miss this one.

I'm curious. I've heard this criticism before. And there have been some others.....Springsteen's The Rising, Elton John's remake of Candle In The Wind after the Princess Di affair.......(just to mention a few). Why is it no one ever said the same thing about Neil Young and Ohio?

Ahem... all of the proceeds of the peace in LA song went to rebuilding the affected neighborhood(s). Petty is an ICON, man! Ranked right up there with Springsteen, et.al.
As for opportunism... anyone who knows anything about Springsteen knows that he doesn't give a crap about $$ any more. He does what he does out of artistic expression and to fufill his own moral compass. The songthe Rising is perhaps one of the great somgs about death and dying this side of "Knocking on Heave'ns door"!
