And there's a Lord named, "Kevin," for Pete's sake!
As Donaldson says, this is Covenant's dream so of course the humans know English. And they also know the "big" words because Covenant is a best-selling author with a huge vocabulary at his disposal. Nobody in Covenant's dream uses English or words from the "real" world he doesn't already know.

But Donaldson has apparently never been asked: if Covenant is dead, then where is this dream coming from?

Still...I'm fascinated by when/why words pull peeps out/suck peeps into texts...and whether they're quirks of the reader, or flaws in the text.
For instance, I think we'd ALL agree it was a text problem if Roger yelled "HAVOC!" and Esmer yelled "SUCK-er!."
And, the opposite kinda: the first time I read them, ran across "desuetude"...it's like on page 2 or something...I was all "Why the F... is that word there?" [I even already knew what it meant...]...100 pages later, hardly notice such, it makes sense by then...be more likely to notice if such WEREN't there.

Wellll, I suppose anyway it's all no more real than the Dark Tower stories.

wow...that's perfect...it's one of my short list of songs that people who know me say "I can't believe you like that song!"
Another on that list is "Total Eclipse of the Heart" which is also my fave literal video. You should check it out, if haven't.

Hmmmm...

"I think so Worm...just how POIT and NAAARFFF would it be to make a Literal Video of "SRD Ate my Dictionary!"
You didn't use any emoticons. How do I know you're not mad at me? Just because you created a Pinky and the Brain reference? :P

Cambo, Worm, for future reference, I refuse to be held to the standards I demand of others.

Havoc, suck-ers.

I absolutely love Donaldson's writing style and vocabulary. In a way I am similar (not in abilities just by disposition) in that I also 'see' in words and not in images (internally, I mean).
Someone compared him to Tolkien earlier in the thread but Tolkien is very different: as a philologist he had very specific knowledge about the origins and ancient meanings of a word and was capable of building a whole storyline out of one single etymology; or write a whole passage with using only words of Anglo-Saxon origin etc. Donaldson has no such intentions because he does not want to create a mythology for England, and that is all very well.

Chthonic is a brilliant word. I still don't know what 'fuligin' is, though.

Fuligin is a color that is darker than black.

I was going to say it was very Spinal Tap-ian.

But, Worm, did you find that word here?:
pannis.com/SFDG/specific-Shadow-2.html

My third favorite series of all time, for now anyway. And another guy who's big on the big word thing.

I looked it up in several places and chose the best definition. But I don't remember seeing that site.

thats close..i got fuliginous..an adjective. vaporous..pertaining to thick, noxious, Soot..latin for soot is fuligin. fuliginosus

In any case, use of these ancient words in the realm of the Land..and the penchant for various characters to wax eloquently where a simple word or two would do close to the same job of communicating..in a way endears the reader to the story. The trait of the author signifies a different reality, but also subtly communicates a respect,,a two way bridge with the reader. He throws the antique out there, we find the provenance, a bond is formed. We return again and again to do business.
If she withdrew from exaltation, she would be forced to think- And every thought led to fear and contradictions; to dilemmas for which she was unprepared.
