Radio K.A.O.S

Radio Waves - firstly it is produced entirely wrong as is most of the album. The bass is way too upfront. It clubs you. It doesn't say on the credits, but its an electronic drum kit and is has that 80's gated reverb. Too much percussion. The guitar is too low in the mix. The song should have cut off at about 3 minutes 30 seconds. The entire fade out is unnecessary. It should not be the opening song. Roger is not recorded well at all. He is drowned out by too much noise. It just bleeds into one muddle. The lyrics would work without the mess they made.

Null Rating - 5 out of 10.

Who Needs Information - again it's too long. At about 4 minutes 15 seconds or so it should have wrapped up. The long fade out is unnecessary. The instruments serve the song better this time. The bass isn't so up front. The drums sound more organic. The guitar is actually a highlight. The chorus makes this song. The interplay between Roger and the back up singers. The saxophone works but I would have cut the song before the other horns.

Null Rating - 6 out of 10

Me or Him - a trend. Cut this after 3 minutes 30 seconds. Lose the last chorus and the Reagan speech. Again too much thump. Needs an even more acoustic treatment. Again the chorus saves the song.

Null Rating - 6 out of 10.

The Powers That Be - again, why cut songs and then pad the run time of the remaining ones? The Fish Report should have been separate track, if Roger just had to have it. That would have kept this at about 3 minutes 15 or so. I like much of whats there. It is another Roger list song. Paul Carrack on vocals is a nice counterpoint to Roger, but why not use him elsewhere. The female bgv's are also used well. The wobble from the synthetic works well here. I like the lyrics and the flow.

Null Rating - 7 out of 10

Sunset Strip - cut the song at 3 minutes. Dump the fish stuff. This song is entirely in the wrong genre. It's a song about being in California. So either make it a Beach Boys song or an Eagles song. But make it organic. Too much keyboard. Too overproduced. This whole album is too constricting. The instruments don't have any space to themselves. I like the idea of Jim Ladd as the DJ, but he would be better utilized on a double album. Allowed to do more.

Null Rating - 5 out of 10

Home - yes it's 6 minutes, but it doesn't drag like other songs here. It moves. Roger's vocals are still to low in the mix. And it is overproduced. But Clare Torry is dynamic. What this song and album needs. Another list song. But affecting in parts. Love the ending as Roger describes the pilot. This song has a humanity missing in the album's 80's overload.

Null Rating - 7 out of 10

Four Minutes - Roger is cribbing parts of Two Suns in the Sunset and On the Run musically and lyrically. Clare Torry is excellent as always. I love her lyrics. Again this has humanity thst much of the album is lacking.

Null Rating - 6 out of 10

The Tide is Turning - overlong again. Cut it off at 4 minutes. Roger ends on a hopeful note. But the song feels incomplete. It doesn't resolve the storyline. Another missed opportunity on an album full of them. I like the guitar and the vocals. The choir is unessessary.

Null Rating - 5 out of 10.

Album Rating - 5.8 out of 10

Given some work, these have the makings of great songs. That only serves to enhance my disappointment of that album - it could have been a great double album with a way more complete story. I can see why Roger was disappointed with it.

I'm working my way through the live stuff. There are some unusual versions on Floyd classics in there. But I think the live show develops Radio Kaos more than the studio album.

Amused to Death

Image

Released: September 1992
StevieG rating: 8.6/10

This album represents Roger Waters in full throttle! He ups the ante significantly in his anti-war efforts. Like it or hate it, this album is musically and thematically brilliant. He seems to take his time on a lot of the tracks, almost as if he is trying to make up for his mistakes on Radio Kaos.

Most of the songs are BIG. Jeff Beck is a welcome addition to this album. I feel that Radio Kaos was lacking in lead guitar, Jeff Beck more than makes up for it. He's up there amongst the greats - arrogant, yeah :D, but nonetheless brilliant.

Roger gives the musicians room to shine, which is a stark contrast to Radio Kaos, so I'm loving that.

The Ballad of Bill Hubbard

StevieG rating: 7/10

Roger doesn't usually do the long intros, but this one is well worth it. The music parts introduce Jeff Beck in a very good way, as well as the sound effects - crickets which I think are a really good addition, animals, TV (a major role in this album). But most importantly, World War I veteran Alfred Razell, and his account of the finding of Bill Hubbard with a near fatal wound, and his inability to rescue him. This sets the scene in a real way.

What God Wants Part I

StevieG rating: 9/10

Jeff Beck really shines in this song. Roger takes a crack at the Almighty! The guitar is seriously high level, the tune is damn catchy, and it sets the scene of the album. It's BIG! Lyrics are constructed with the usual brilliance. It's hard to fault.

Perfect Sense Part I

StevieG rating: 8/10

This song takes it time, but the piano is so emotive. It continues the 'monkey' looking from afar concept. I love the "monkey looked up in the stars" line followed by the nice stellar effects. This is an emotional lament that gives the vocalist, P.P. Arnold I think, time to step up, and no-one could possibly be disappointed. Damn!

Perfect Sense Part II

StevieG rating: 9/10

Once again, the vocalists shine. I love the commentary that seems to be a baseball game, and is in fact a commentary on a strike on an oil rig. Can't you see it all makes perfect sense, expressed in dollars and cents, pounds shillings and pence. The emotive response is profound.

The Bravery of Being out of Range

StevieG rating: 10/10

Lyrics! Amazing. This version is the remastered one from 2015, so it took me off guard because of the changes. But Jeff Beck is still prominent. I love the drive this song has - the backing vocals are perfectly placed. I feel like Roger was almost trying to make up from his previous musical mistakes. I can't really find any fault in this song - it's gotta be 10/10!

Late Home Tonight Part I

StevieG rating: 7/10

Sets the scene for an extended narrative. All the lyrics are great, but I particularly like:

The kid from Cleveland
In the comfort of routine
Scans his dials and smiles

And the end is disturbing. Very well done and very disturbing.

Late Home Tonight Part 2

StevieG rating: 9/10

It reminds me of the Gunner's Dream. So powerful. Nice inclusion of "Take this cigar". He has the ability to tell the story, and tell it well.

Too Much Rope

StevieG rating: 10/10

You gotta love the wood chopping sound effects! And the sleigh! Awesome! When the song kicks in, it is a melodic emotive sucker punch. Backing vocals are amazing. Lyrics are cutting, as cutting as ever.

You don't have to be a Jew
To disapprove of murder
Tears burn our eyes
Moslem or Christian Mullah or Pope
Preacher or poet who was it wrote
Give any one species too much rope
And they'll fuck it up

Wow. That's what I'm talking about! Then there's some awesome guitar. Roger sings some lines that seem out of his range, but I don't care!

It's only two humans being.

That is one great lyric! Amazing. It's hard to rate it anything else but a 10.

What God Wants Part 2

StevieG rating: 7/10

Back into the "god" series :D. Nice intro by an evangelistic person of some sort. It isn't as interesting from a musical perspective as the first part, but it still tells the story.

What God Wants Part 3

StevieG rating: 8/10

Crickets! And an Echoes ping! Here we get into the "alien" prophet and monkey, looking down at humans with bemusement. Some nice Beck solos in this one. Actually, some GREAT Beck solos. Ends with a phone call with a veteran singing an old tune...

Watching TV

StevieG rating: 10/10

Starts with TV... Don Henley compliments Roger's vocals perfectly. It's great to hear this legend in this type of song. The song itself is one of Roger's most emotive songs in his catalogue. I love how he can do this. The music perfectly compliments the whole song. The lyrics are among the best he has produced. He does proceed to give us a history lesson on Chinese oppression, but I forgive him for that, simply through the lyric And I grieve for my sister!

Yes. Yes.

She's everybody's sister
She's symbolic of our failure
She's the one in fifty million
Who can help us to be free
Because she died on TV

Three Wishes

StevieG rating: 9/10

The intro woman sounds so much like my Italian grandmother that I get a little unsettled every time I hear it. Once again, Roger captures his intent with precision. I love the feel of this song. I think he makes dubious choices with his 3 wishes. Why not go bigger? A wasted opportunity! :D

The genie is portrayed effectively, the guitar solo is special. I also like how he takes his time to finish off the song. It's funny, because Radio Kaos dragged, whereas these song, which are twice as long at least, don't drag at all. The songs ends with my grandmother narrating another sad story, and Jeff singing with his guitar.

It's A Miracle

StevieG rating: 7/10

The whole album has this feel to it. Once again, Roger takes his time on this song. I remember hearing it for the first time, and being completely transfixed. Lyrics once again. They make this record - but equally important are the musicians. There is a lyric in there about Andrew Lloyd-Webber, which sounds pretty bitter. Apparently, the Floyd thought that Lloyd-Webber stole a riff out of Echoes. Of course, they couldn't ask him to pay compensation because the lawyers would stuff them up. So Roger has a crack at him in this song. I like, again, how the song doesn't just finish, but ends with some super cool drumming.

Amused To Death

StevieG rating: 10/10

Does this album end on a positive note? Well, yes, because of the final commentary from the veteran from the start, who finds peace in finding Bill Hubbard's plaque. Prior to that, the song tells the story of humankind's demise due to its excessive consumption - amused to death - very clever I think. The music is beautifully building. Each song on this album takes as long as it should.

Lyrics are as good as you'd expect - which is supremely good. It's hard to pick out the best bits, so I can only copy it all to do it justice:

Doctor Doctor what is wrong with me
This supermarket life is getting long
What is the heart life of a colour TV
What is the shelf life of a teenage queen

Ooh western woman
Ooh western girl

News hound sniffs the air
When Jessica Hahn goes down
He latches on to that symbol
Of detachment
Attracted by the peeling away of feeling
The celebrity of the abused shell the belle

Ooh western woman
Ooh western girl

And the children of Melrose
Strut their stuff
Is absolute zero cold enough
And out in the valley warm and clean
The little ones sit by their TV screens
No thoughts to think
No tears to cry
All sucked dry
Down to the very last breath
Bartender what is wrong with me
Why am I so out of breath
The captain said excuse me ma'am
This species has amused itself to death
Amused itself to death
Amused itself to death

We watched the tragedy unfold
We did as we were told
We bought and sold
It was the greatest show on earth
But then it was over
We ohhed and aahed
We drove our racing cars
We ate our last few jars of caviar
And somewhere out there in the stars
A keen-eyed look-out
Spied a flickering light
Our last hurrah
And when they found our shadows
Grouped around the TV sets
They ran down every lead
They repeated every test
They checked out all the data on their lists
And then the alien anthropologists
Admitted they were still perplexed
But on eliminating every other reason
For our sad demise
They logged the only explanation left
This species has amused itself to death

No tears to cry no feelings left
This species has amused itself to death

The war veteran's words are also worth noting, some of which are copied here:

Years later, I saw Bill Hubbard's name on the memorial to the missing
at Aras. And I...when I saw his name I was absolutely transfixed; it
was as though he was now a human being instead of some sort of
nightmarish memory of how I had to leave him, all those years ago.
And I felt relieved, and ever since then I've felt happier about it,
because always before, whenever I thought of him, I said to myself,
'Was there something else that I could have done?'

I have always found that bit of the interview with Alfred Razell to be very moving, as he is able to come to terms with not helping Bill Hubbard way back then, because he couldn't, and because Bill Hubbard wouldn't let him. It's like Alfred is able to forgive himself at last, and to find peace with the old memory. Moving stuff to me!

Amused to Death

The Ballad of Bill Hubbard - quite affecting of an opener. Jeff Beck manages a Gilmour tone on guitar, setting the mood. The TV is set up as a running motif. The War Veteran's story is heartbreaking.

Null Rating - 6 out of 10

What God Wants, pt 1 - damn, Beck is smoking on this track. Roger gives his musicians more space on this album and it shows. That's Randy Jackson [American Idol] on bass! Organic drums. A nice groove moving the song along. Great lyrics. It already feels like Roger took more time with this album.

Null Rating - 9 out of 10

Perfect Sense, pt 1 - a nice piano, Roger singing an almost lullaby. And then P.P. Arnold comes in on vocals and elevates the entire song. Roger
Really uses female backing vocals well as a counterpoint to his sandpaper vocals.
Steve Lukather (Toto) is on guitar. Strong lyrics again.

Null Rating - 9 out of 10

Perfect Sense, pt 2 - everything good about part one. But I don't like the Marv Albert play by play. And it gets a bit too strident.

Null Rating - 6 out of 10

The Bravery of Being Out of Range - perfect title. Perfect concept. Perfect chorus. Reminds me of the best aspects of the Wall. Beck is amazing. The female bgv's are also perfect.

Old man what the hell you gonna kill next
Old timer who you gonna kill next

Null Rating - 10 out of 10

Late Home Tonight, pt 1 - the birds return. Starts pastoral, like Granchester Meadows, as Roger lulls us in, then the tribal like drums and chanting shock us before the air strike. More narrative than song.

Null Rating - 6 out of 10

Late Home Tonight, pt 2 - I feel that this has more impact. Its mournful and to the point.

Null Rating - 7 out of 10

Too Much Rope - I like it when singers strain to reach a note when done in service to the song. It denotes anguish in this case. Brilliant lyrics. Lukather on guitar again.

What God Wants, pt 2 - it's really Money, pt 2. The monetary lyrics are brilliant. Again we have Randy Jackson on bass and he shines this time.

Null Rating - 9 out of 10.

What God Wants, pt 3 - not sure why this is part three. The Echoes ping indeed. Musically its completely different. Lyrically we get call backs to Animals and Corporal Clegg. (Stone and gin respectfully). Another one that is more transitional than song. Beck returns brilliantly and will.finish the album.

Null Rating - 7 out of 10.

Watching TV - Don Henley is a perfect compliment to Roger on vocals. The lyrics are brilliant. I'm going to post them separately. I will say the ending line is devastating and true.

She's the one in fifty million
Who can help us to be free
Because she died on T.V.

Null Rating - 10 out of 10

Three Wishes - if this were just the chorus and the Beck guitar solo it would be perfect, it's all that is needed.

You see someone through the window
Who you've just learned to miss
And the road leads on to glory but
You've used up your last wish

Your last wish
And you want her to come home

Null Rating - 9 out of 10

It's A Miracle - the bassline remind me Eugene.. overly long. I like the lyrics until Andrew Lloyd, then it is no longer universal.

Null Rating - 6 out of 10

Amused to Death - Rita Coolidge on vocals, beautifully at that. Roger ends with a powerful warning. Excellent ending song. And a fitting tribute to war veterans with the speech at the end.

Null Rating - 10 out of 10

Album Rating - 8.1 out of 10

Thanks Sarge. I'm glad we're on the same page with this album. The lyrics are definitely a highlight - which is saying something considering Roger's lyrics on previous albums. Jeff Beck is amazing. The fact that Roger managed to snag Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck is pretty special.
