I'm determined to pick this up again :D

In the meantime, here's a COVID version of the Bravery of Being out of Range.

Note that there are new lyrics in the last verse. I love these new re-releases.

Roger needs to release all of these lockdown songs on a double album. He could 0ick songs from every point of his career. His band sounds fantastic.

What are thoughts on the "newer" PF song: "Things Left Unsaid"?

(I will hold my thoughts after reading a few other's comments.)
Have you hugged your arghule today?

Do you mean "The Endless River" album?

If so, I didn't like it. Here is my review:

"Ambient noodling" was the common thought.

Ok, here we are: the long awaited return of this epic experience :D

Here are a few songs from the Flickering Flame and associated solo stuff. We know Roger is anti-war :D. He ups the ante here!

Each Small Candle

StevieG rating: 8/10

The first time I heard this song, I thought "meh" to a degree. But it has grown on me - big time! The backing vocals are smoking, the guitar work is fantastic, and the message is really touching. Roger's voice is pretty average, but that never really matters. This is a song about soldier helping a wounded woman from the "other" side.

The guitar work is impressive. The start of the song has Animals overtones musically. At 9 minutes, it doesn't drag. I like the ending too.

Flickering Flame

StevieG rating: 7/10

Do I detect a Southern twang to Roger's voice? :D

It's a pleasant, reflective song. No complaints. Nothing much happens, but it has relaxing feel to it. The strings add to the feel of the song, as well as the acoustic guitar.

I love the lyric:

When my synapses pause in my quest for applause
When my ego lets go of my end of the bone
To focus instead on the love that is precious to me
Then I shall be free
I shall be free

Lost Boys Calling

StevieG rating: 10/10

Awesome! That's what I'm talking about. This collaboration between Roger and Ennio Morricone, legendary Italian composer, is almost the definition of emotion. I don't know how he keeps coming up with these types of songs. This was Roger's contribution to the film The Legend of 1900 which I haven't seen, but looking at the music video, I wouldn't mind checking it out.

You never took me fishing, Dad, and now you never will...

Damn!

To Kill a Child

StevieG rating: 7/10

This is a very interesting song. It has Donald Duck light in the lyrics - same as The Tide is Turning from Radio Kaos. It has the makings of one of his "list" songs, reeling off all the luxury items etc. and wondering why we would choose to kill a child. Why indeed. Smoking backing vocals as usual. This whole song sounds like it could be on a good version of Radio Kaos.

I'm not a huge fan of the ending part with Roger's singing, but overall a good song. It ends abruptly.

Leaving Beirut

StevieG rating: 9/10

There's no doubting the emotional impact once again. Roger ramps up his anti-war theme, no surprises there :D

This is part narrative, part song. It is incredibly poetic. His lyrical ability is simply up there with the best of all time. It's a lengthy song. I like the interplay between the spoken word and the singing. The backing vocals kill it as usual.

I did laugh at That Texas education must have fucked you up when you were very small. You may not be so keen on it Sgt :D

The story telling part of this is really appealing to me. He sets a scene extremely effectively.

Flickering Flame

Each Small Candle : It does sound like an Animals track. I was surprised that it clocked in at 9 minutes. It does not drag at all. I've the lyrics, the message behind them.

The first stanza explained by Roger - "A few years ago, an Italian journalist from a Florentine newspaper, involved in the Iniziativa contro la tortura, which is the initiative against torture in Northern Italy, sent some lyrics written by a South American man who had been tortured. The English translation (which represents the first stanza of the song) proved to be very moving, and was set to music. The words remained untouched.. Until Kosovo."

Not the torturer will scare me
Nor the body's final fall
Nor the barrels of death's rifles
Nor the shadows on the wall
Nor the night when to the ground
The last dim star of pain, is hurled
But the blind indifference
Of a merciless, unfeeling world

The band is just fantastic.

Roger Waters - vocals, bass & guitar
Doyle Bramhall II – guitar
Snowy White – guitar
Andy Fairweather Low – guitar, bass & vocal
Graham Broad – drums
Jon Carin – keyboards
Andy Wallace – hammond/keyboards
Katie Kissoon, Susannah Melvion, P P Arnold – vocals

Null Rating : 8 out of 10

Flickering Flame : Roger sounds so much like Bob Dylan here. Even name checks Quinn the Eskimo. Also name checks Molly & Leopold from my favorite Joyce work. Very poetic. Just Roger, Carin, Bramhall on the track. I really like the lyrics.

Null Rating : 7 out of 10

Lost Boys Calling : Wow. This is a very emotional take. I'm posting the film version so you can see the contrast. Roger's strained vocal really works here. This would not be out if place on the Wall or the Final Cut. In fact replace Not Now John with this on the latter.

Null Rating : 10 out of 10

Lost Boys Calling (Soundtrack version) https://youtu.be/Yk_qnSekqrU
The trade off? A more restrained vocal and Eddie Van Halen doing a beautiful solo.

Null Rating : 9 out of 10

To Kill the Child - The ending is very abrupt. I like the lyrics, though Roger goes so fast it took a couple of listens to get them all. I liked the Donald Duck light reference, making this a cynical sequel to the Tide Is Turning. I'm surprised this didn't find a home on the last solo effort. I believe this song would benefit being part of a larger narrative.

Null Rating : 7 out of 10

Leaving Beirut : I'm from NH originally, so I wasn't educated here in Texas. Roger played this the first time we saw him live. The reaction was mixed. I'm not a fan of Bush jr. Mixed feelings on this one. I like the singing parts much more than the spoken parts. I understand that this is important to Roger. Its just not a song I will return to much.

Null Rating : 7 out of 10

There are a few other things I'll dig up later today.

Hello (I Love You)

https://youtu.be/1eK6FY4Hykc

Is there anybody in there?

Have you heard, it was on the news
Your child can read you like a bedtime story
Like a magazine, like a has-been out to grasp
Like afternoon TV, why is my life going by so fast?

Hello I love you, is there anybody in there?
Put down the phone, shut up the shop, make all the techno babble stop
We'll find a short-wave frequency
The wave connecting you and me, hello I love you

Have you heard, it was on the news
The general staff can't figure out is this campaign win or lose
Life is long but it goes fast
The kids will have to separate their future from our past

Hello I love you, is there anybody in there?
The ghosts are walking by my side, I feel their love I feel their pride
For I have built a bridge or two
Bridges between me and you, hello I love you

Have you heard, it was on the news
You can make your peace on the dark side of the moon
I'll see you there, we can rock 'n' roll
We can make our choice, we can say goodbye or say hello

Hello I love you, is there anybody in there?
Hello, hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello is there anybody in there?

Hello I love you, is there anybody in there?
Hello, hello, hello, hello

Hello, hello, hello, hello

Hello I love you, is there anybody in there?
Hello, hello, hello

Hello, hello, hello, hello
Hello, hello, hello is there anybody in there?

Referencing The Wall, Dark Side and Radio Kaos. As well as an open invitation to the other Floyd members after Live 8 to tour again. Reminds of an early Floyd song, but I can't quite place it.

Hello (I love you)

StevieG rating: 8/10

The verse reminds me a bit of If in its melody. The verse could easily fit on Obscured by Clouds or Meddle. The chorus is a little different though. It has some interesting chord progressions. It fits into the film soundtrack perfectly.

Odds & Sods

Another Brick in the Wall pt 2 w/ Cyndi Lauper
https://youtu.be/-Nl0xzzNGZA

Released as a single from his Live at the Berlin Wall show. Cyndi brings a lot of energy. Snowy White does a great solo. The entire show is a must see.

Null Rating : 7 out if 10

Run Like Hell
https://youtu.be/TvDL2krlMbY

The b-side. The Bleeding Hearts Band was on fire. Roger handled all the vocals. He should have split them like Dave does.

Null Rating : 7 out of 10

The Tide is Turning - from the Wall, Live in Berlin
https://youtu.be/KGK6a5FkHjw

with Joni Mitchell, Cyndi Lauper, Bryan Adams, Van Morrison and Paul Carrack on vocals. No one does grand statements like Roger. I can't fault his intent, it did seem like we as a species had turned a corner.

Null Rating : 8 out of 10
https://youtu.be/2Dy1493vALg

Nobody Home - seems an odd choice for the b side . But its a favorite of mine. This is a strong version.

Null Rating : 8 out of 10

We Shall Overcome - released on 2010 in response to the Israeli blockade of Gaza.
https://youtu.be/dTkP8DsKaJo

I find Roger's stance problematic at times. But he seems sincere. This version does not stray far from previous versions. It is well done and Roger sings within his range. If it were my cause I would likely give it a higher ranking.

Null Rating : 6 out of 10

Comfortably Numb - from Roger's 2015 Live version of the Wall.
https://youtu.be/cryTiFrtHqA

We saw him on this tour.

Roger Waters : Vocals, guitar, bass
G. E. Smith : Guitar, bass
Snowy White : Guitar
David Kilminster : Guitar, bass on "Mother"
Robbie Wyckoff : Vocals
Jon Carin : Keyboards, guitar
Harry Waters : Piano, harmonium (his son)
Graham Broad : Drums
Jon Joyce, Kipp Lennon, Mark Lennon, Pat Lennon : Backing vocals

I'm not going to rank this show. I'm too biased. I loved the experience and have nothing but great memories of both times we saw him do the Wall.

Hey You : the b-side.
https://youtu.be/dG1RaqYGbA0

In the Flesh? : a-side
https://youtu.be/_njg039k_N8

The Ballad of Jean Charles de Menezes - the only new song on the album. The song references a Brazlian national killed by London police in 2005.
https://youtu.be/_zql09vTLvo

All in all it's just another brick in the wall
All in all you're just another brick in the wall

Just another blunder
Just another lousy call
Just another clap of thunder

And apologies ring hollow
From the guilty in Whitehall
And there's no hint of sorrow
In the whitewash on the wall

And nothing is gained
(Nothing at all)

And Jean Charles de Menezes remains
Just another brick in the wall

A powerful and beautiful song. Short and haunting.

Is This the Life We Really Want

Image

Released: June 2017

StevieG rating: 7.8/10

Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich came in to produce this album, and had a very strong influence on its sound. His aim was to create a pared-back album, focussing on Roger's lyrics. In that part, he succeeded. I must admit, I like Roger's theatrical style, but I also agree that it is good to change it up a bit. Another Wall or Final Cut probably wouldn't work this far down the track.

The theme of the album is explained by Waters:

The concerns I have with that central question - "Why are we killing the children?" - are still there. I'm still deeply concerned that we're killing children all over the world with hardly a second thought because we've become so insensitive to the idea of every time the curtain falls on some forgotten life, it is because we stood by silent and indifferent - it's normal. I'm quoting from the record now. And unfortunately, it has become normal; we have normalized the death of the innocent.

The album definitely does feel stripped back a bit. There are no "feature" musicians - they're all in there doing their thing. And it works. As I said, I prefer is over-blown theatrical stuff traditionally, but this album hits the spot, mostly! It's certainly not my favourite, but it is a good album.

When We Were Young

StevieG rating: 5/10

Not the strongest opening. Sounds like a bunch of muffled rambling, poetic as it is. The best part of it is the transition into the next song.

Deja Vu

StevieG rating: 10/10

I love this song. You could call it "vintage" Waters. I have the live Us and Them show, and this song absolutely hits the mark. The reaction of the crowd is heartfelt. I'll link it if it is available online.

Roger muses about whether he would have done a better job if he were God. Classic!

If I had been God
I would have rearranged the veins in the face to make them more resistant to alcohol, and less prone to aging

The Last Refugee

StevieG rating: 7/10

The recurring British sound effects are in full force here - the weather, and the time! This is the second "type" of song on this album. The first is the traditional-style Waters like Deja Vu, and the second is this slightly less appealing style of melody. It works as a contrast to the first style but is less enjoyable to listen to - for me.

Picture That

StevieG rating: 7/10

The words are deliciously CUTTING :D Sounds a bit like Welcome to the Machine Part 2 in parts. This has the slightly less appealing style of music - for me - but still a well constructed track.

Broken Bones

StevieG rating: 9/10

Back to "Vintage" Waters :D This has the familiar "clearing of throat" like Wish You Were Here, and moves into great song. Roger's voice has "gravellised" (my new word) and sounds great for the song. The lyrics for the whole song are really strong

And oh, mistress liberty, how we abandoned thee.

I have to admit, I also love the lyric: We cannot turn back the clock, cannot go back in time, but we can say "fuck you" we will not listen to your bullshit and lies.

Is This The Life We Really Want?

StevieG rating: 8/10

The goose has gotten fat! Roger's voice has deepened over the years - he's generally singing within his range now, which is great. Lyrics are fantastic again:

Is this the life, the holy grail?
It's not enough that we succeed
We still need others to fail

He goes on to list atrocity after atrocity and the fact that we all stand by, silent and indifferent. It's an awesome list, and he goes off on a tangent about ants - I love it! The ending lets it down for me. It's a strange way to end a great song.

Bird in a Gale

StevieG rating: 5/10

This is my least favourite track on the album. It just grates. It can't say it's a bad song, I just find it a bit overwhelming. The start of it is ok - when the singing comes in, it goes down a peg, and the middle filler is just a bit annoying. Not my favourite.

The Most Beautiful Girl

StevieG rating: 7/10

This is where I really notice the "pared back" nature of this album. The drumming is very concise and contained. There are very few flourishes in this whole album, and this song sums it up. It's a sad lament:

She may well have been
The most beautiful girl in the world
Her life snuffed out
Like a bulldozer crushing a pearl

I've heard the term "crackpot of ages" - is it from another Floyd song or somewhere else? I can't think of it right now.

Smell the Roses

StevieG rating: 6/10

This is the last of that second type of song on the album. It has a nice groove to it. It's put together skilfully and has a reasonable flow - it's just not one I like to listen to much. Actually, the main reason I do listen to this one is for the next song.

Wait for Her / Oceans Apart / Part of Me Died

Wait For Her - music video

StevieG rating: 10/10

It's a relief to come back to vintage Waters. This song is part of the final three songs that blend into each other. This has its own music video which is extremely emotional. The lyrics are poetic in the extreme. It has a familiar Waters progression. I love this song.

Oceans Apart

StevieG rating: 10/10

I can't really fault this song, although it pretty much acts as a bridge between Wait for Her and Part of Me Died. It's very short, but I can see why it is a separate song. The transition between the previous and next song is perfect.

She was always here in my heart
Always the love of my life
We were strangers, oceans apart
But when I laid eyes on her a part of me died

Part of Me Died

StevieG rating: 9/10

List it, Roger!

Roger lists all the parts of him that died when he met the love of his life. I'll list it, because it's impressive:

The part that is envious, cold hearted and devious
Greedy, mischievous, global, colonial
Bloodthirsty, blind, mindless and cheap
Focused on borders and slaughter and sheep

Burning of books, bulldozing of homes
Given to targeted killing with drones
Lethal injections, arrest without trial

Monocular vision, gangrene and slime
Unction, sarcasm, common assault
Self-satisfied heroic killers
Lifted on high

Piracy adverts, acid attacks
On women by bullies and perverts and hacks
The rigging of ballots and the buying of power

Lies from the pulpit
Rape in the shower
Mute, indifferent
Feeling no shame
Portly, important
Leering, deranged

Sat in the corner watching TV
Deaf to the cries of children in pain
Dead to the world
Just watching the game

Watching endless repeats out of sight, out of mind
Silence, indifference
The ultimate crime
But when I met you, that part of me died

Bring me a bowl to bathe her feet in
Bring me my final cigarette
It would be better by far to die in her arms than to linger
In a lifetime of regret

It's a great ending to the album. It loses one point for the musical ending, which just ends. It feels like it needs a more satisfying ending. I guess that's part of this album and the theme of stripping it back.
