i've had this with actors before, on the set,
where they get upset about the [size of my]
trailer, and i'm always like...take my trailer,
cause... i'm from Kentucky
and that's not what we brag about.

Oh, yes. . . the accents. This is a picture of my tour guide from Pompeii. His name is Marco. He had a lovely accent. I gave some very serious thought to asking him to come home with me.Lucimay wrote:heh. and that red-headed boy in the group photo, with the black tshirt and khaki shorts...that's tadgh's brother (who's name i now can't remember)....ah the ACCENT. you know us dumb American girls...suckers for accents, irish or otherwise!!!
I would imagine that you'd have a lovely accent as well, Xar, especially to our ears. Unless one learns language in a vacuum from a electronic robotic (uninflected) source, a person will always have some inflection reminiscent of the prevailing trend both at home and locally. Of course, there will always be exceptions to this rule.Xar wrote:Darn, I need to exercise a more heavily accented English... why, why did I ever learn to speak English so well?! Ah, the angst! The pain!
For instance, even though I grew up in the midwest United States, I have been told on many ocassions (by other Americans from both coasts) that I have very little accent, and when I do it is limited to a very few individual words. I chalk this up to having moved around some in my younger years, and to having parents who grew up in places with with almost no discernable accent (California and Indiana). Now, the Danish man I once dated told me I had a very slight accent--only natural, since English is not his native language.
I cannot speak for others, but one of the reasons I find accents enchanting is how they add a level of musicality to the spoken language that is usually lacking (or at least undetected by me). Hence the reason that I could have listened to Marco talk about absolutely anything all day long. . .
Meh. . . I hope that made some sense. It's late and I'm tired.
Makes perfect sense. I'm a southerner that was raised in California but lives in Maryland. I don't have the gawdawful annoying Baltimore accent, but my drawl and my surfer accents both slip out from time to time.
And given enough Guinness, my brogue comes out quite a lot.

Believe you me, nothing would make me happier, as long as I don't have to drive in LA traffic again!

Studies indicate that if you move away from a place with a distinct accent before the age of 13 years, you will likely lose the accent. However, the reverse is true as well. . . if you live somewhere with an strong local accent for the first 13 years of life, it is likely that you will always have some of it.Cail wrote:Makes perfect sense. Case in point: I went to university with a young man whose parents were both Americans that became missionaries to England. He was born in England, and spent the first 17 years of his life there before moving back to the states. His mother and father had no accent whatsoever. . . but Kevin sounded unmistakably like an English gentleman. Boy was he popular with the ladies. . .

And a mighty fine job he did of it....especially from my perspective. Also, I think it's safe to let the cat out of the bag and officially announce that yes, SRD will be the guest expert in the final episode of FBH. Well, he already bought his plane tickets anyway.....

I also need to clear up some confusion. Tadhg, pronounced like tiger without the er on the end, has never been a member of KW. As far as I know, I am the only cast/crew member of FBH that has joined other than some past and future experts and I just did it yesterday.

I've gotten emails from fans already, one of which pointed out that it's nice that FINALLY someone from FBH joined the watch...heheheheh. I know I should have joined sooner but what can I say, I am a busy busy girl. I promise to try to make time for KW though.
Hugs!
