I never imagined Downey for this role. Not once. Never occured to me. Never heard a rumor, not a peep.
I have an uncomfortable feeling about this. Like when I heard Michael Keaton was chosen to play Batman. !?! As it turns out Keaton (in the first film at least) was suprisingly good as Batman. Not the best just a pleasant suprise from the expectation. Downey? I guess I have to let it sink in for a while.

Let's hope he can stay sober long enough.

Don't you think that his own battles with addiction and excess may well help him with the role of Tony Stark? I mean really, the movie is about HIM and not Iron Man, right?

The reason the Spidey movies work so well is that they are movies essentially about Peter Parker.

There might be something about Downey that Favreau sees that I'm probably missing. I've liked most everything Downey has done. Alot of it has been light hearted, on the comedic side. The selection may have nothing to do with Downey's struggle with substance abuse. I'm not even sure the alcoholism is going to be adressed in the film. I think I'm in the camp that is willing to see how this goes, first impressions notwithstanding.

I don't know enough about the character obviously.....I didn't know that Stark had those kinds of problems.

I don't know anything about Iron Man, but if an avowed diehard fan like aTOMiC is apprehensive about this, then I should be, too. However, I do like Robert Downey Jr as an actor.

As dlb says, the real question may be whether or not Downey can stay sober long enough.

(Sorry, I know alcoholism isn't very funny.)

Tony Stark has always been like a James Bond type of character to me.
Downey is..............not.

I'm thinking this will be as good as the Punisher Movie.

Downey has done at least a good job every time, and has been great sometimes. I don't imagine Tony Stark is beyond his talents. There's probably a much better chance the movie's plot and dialog will be lame.

I wouldn't have thought of it myself, but I can sort of picture it. I'm prepared to give it a shot.

The early rumours of course were all around Tom Cruise, but they decided that it would be difficult, because Iron Man fights so many enemies that are either taller than IM, (and therefore dwarf him by comparison), or are shorter than IM, (and the guy who played Mini-Me is busy).
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Downey could pull it off. He'll have to get in better shape of course, but it can be done. I am just concerned that the plot of the movie may be silly. Iron Man just doesn't seem to end itself WELL to the big screen, unlike Spidey and X-Men. Ghost Rider Scares the heck out of me too.

My reaction is the exact opposite. Iron man has always been the only superhero that doesn't require a silly leap in logic. Bitten by a radiocative spider, gamma rays, cosmic rays, blinded by toxic waste, werewolf, aliens, wild mutation, brightly colored tights etc. Iron man is based on advanced technology that if presented in the right way can be the most plausible approach for the super powered hero. I believe Iron man the movie had the chance to be presented as the most acceptable / beliveable super powered hero so far. But you never know. It could be a train wreck. We'll see.

I don't know....I always wondered how Stark designed boot jets that had enough thrust to put him into orbit, whille not generating sufficient heat to make his legs uncomfortable, and with no visible fuel source.

Fair point, but then most science fiction is based on the idea of currently implausible tech made possible by some major discovery between now and the future. I don't see it being a big problem with Iron Man.

I'm not saying I have a problem with it; I'm saying it's neither more or less improbable than the "radiocative spider, gamma rays, cosmic rays, blinded by toxic waste, werewolf, aliens, wild mutation" things.
