See the trailer. It looks awesome!Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite.

Now, I know from being in the watch a while that there are some fans of Greek battle stories.

Damn. I was hoping they would have made a Thermopylae movie based of the Pressfield book....

I haven't read it, but I suspect if it is an adaptation of a graphic novel, then they are trying to capture the 'graphic novel' feel with their cinematography. Certainly some of the shots we see - like the very first one - are visually dramatic, but don't score high on realism.CovenantJr wrote:Trailer looks good. A bit overblown, but then I wouldn't expect gritty realism from this sort of film. I might pay it a visit.

Well indeed. That's why I can probably forgive the excesses.Wayfriend wrote:I haven't read it, but I suspect if it is an adaptation of a graphic novel, then they are trying to capture the 'graphic novel' feel with their cinematography.CovenantJr wrote:Trailer looks good. Saw this preview at yesterday's showing of "The Departed" (Excellent movie btw. Scorcese's best behind "Goodfellas"). Almost had a coronary. Looks Un-F'in believable!
Much like "Sin City", they've chosen to take a very stylized view (reflecting the source) but, if the preview is any indication, it will only serve to heighten the mythological feel. Zach Snyder has compared his treatment of the movie to that of an operatic retelling.
I can't wait!

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. WOO HOO!! Like dAN, duchess, and - although he didn't say - Brinn, I'm hoping for Gates of Fire. But this looks like it will be great fun! It does look overblown. I hope it's a bit saner at times. Sin City is supposed to be that way.

Wayfriend,
Yeah. It was the exact same one. But seeing on that immense screen with theater quality sound...Man, I just looked at my wife with this dumbstruck look and a small bit of drool falling from the corner of my gaping mouth!

Fist,
Of course I want to see "Gates" on film! But this will work to tide me over.

Some reviews coming in. Take your pick.

Ladies, believe it or not this will be one of your favorite movies of next year. ... Much like “Master and Commander” and “ Gladiator” this movie is going to play so well to an unexpected female demographic. It has been long assumed that all we want to see is Julia Roberts fall in love with the “it” man of the moment. We don’t. We want to see something beautiful and engaging. I knew of packs of middle-aged women who went to see Gladiator multiple times. We aren’t afraid of violence, in fact when done correctly it is quite...um...sexy. ...[link]

... But for those intrigued by a film told in this particular visual manner or for those that enjoy cinema that is purely visual – something akin to a moving painting – this is going to knock your socks off as it did the large majority of BNATers. It really is jaw dropping. At the risk of repeating myself, you really have not seen anything like this. Ever. Ever ever. The battle scenes are a marvel of visual ingenuity. And the production design - the hair, make-up, costume, everything pertaining to the LOOK of the film. Just ----ing amazing. It really is the prettiest film I’ve seen in a LONG time.
But I’m a story man. And that’s where 300 sadly runs off the rails. ... [link]
