Turn One

The newsreader turns to the camera again, her face ashen and anxious. "Thankyou, General. I am sure the military is doing all it can to fight the crisis." She then adjusts her expensive suit again, for the twentieth time of the broadcast and arranges her papers as thought to hide the nervousness of her hands. Behind her is a map of America - all of the major urban and rural areas surrounded by crimson circles - with warning symbols scrawled across the states. A few figures fidget in the background, some of them making adjustments to the map by circling another city or town or placing another biohazard icon on a region.

"For those who have just tuned in, I will repeat the evening's bulletin. The entire country, and we believe the rest of the world, has been struck by a terrible event. A pandemic is gripping the nation - a virus that does not discriminate between children and adults, the healthy and the sick, christians and atheists. I have no wish to frighten you, but it is the belief that fear alone may be what saves us. Do not leave your homes or offices, and take extreme measures to seal your windows and doors. Do not eat or drink anything from outdoors, and do not take pity on the infected."

The newsreader turns her head to her left. "Professor Tung, for the benefit of the viewers, could you repeat what your team has discovered?"

The screen flicks over to show a large asian man sitting in front of camera in a busy studio room. He holds a wad of scientific reports in his pudgy hands and a sheen of sweat covers his round face. Academics and politicians sit beside him - equally anxious. "Thankyou, Mary. It appears to be a gross mutation of a herpes virus - similar to encephalitis. However, this virus causes necrosis of specific regions of the brain. The diseased sections - such as the cortex . . . uh . . . higher brain regions and some emotional regions - atrophy instead of inflammation. At this point the infection ceases, and the victim is left in an animalistic or vegetative state.

"As the body is unable to process pain signals, any wounds in the body fail to heal and so the infected are left in a state similar to leprosy, though far more severe. The infected still need to eat and drink, but because the higher cognitive centres are damaged they are often unable to moderate their eating behaviour, or other behaviours. Thus, anything is food and cannibalism is all too frequent."

The screen shifts to show the newsreader again. "Thankyou, Professor. What do we know about the virus' etiology, its infection rate and if there is a cure?"

"Nothing as to its cause," Tung says calmy when the screen shows his face again. "But we know that some people are immune. Possibly it has something to do with their immune system or chemicals present in their bodies. Sadly, 99% of the population will . . . could be infected. As for the cure, we have no idea. Therefore, we are facing a nation overrun with decaying individuals who cannot recognise loved ones, who respect no laws or customs, who are violent . . . who mass together in great herds of the infected and attack and eat anything not infected."

"And what of the reports that the virus is infecting the recently deceased?"

The professor appears distressed and confused. "I refuse to believe in such stories."

"Well base upon what we are hearing from Watch City, it seems like it is a reality we have to face . . ."

Special Event: The subway system is working temporarily. All characters are able to move up to four zones next turn. However, characters cannot transport their vehicles.

Listen to me brothers and sisters! The END IS NEAR!

The government tells us to keep our heads down and to walk calmly into the chute and wait our turn to enter the slaughter house!

There are thing going on at the top of the heirarchy and I won't let you walk around without knowing about it!

The Dead Walk! Sinners are being struck down as I speak, so repent I say! Make peace, and be spared!

The Government is to blame!

Repent! Repent!

Say, God-bomb!

Ugghh, another raving looney. At least this one won't try to kill me . . . probably.

'Say, friend, what the hell are you going on about? There's no top of the hierarchy anymore . . . in case you hadn't noticed - there's almost no anybody anymore. A few groups huddled behind closed doors, and no-one in charge of anything . . .'

Dr. Neville. First of all, keep calm. Move as many patients and staff into one area of the hospital and secure that area - preferably an area with access to surgical equipment and medicine. Gather as much food and drinking water as possible and take it to the area. Lock the doors, shutter the windows and await my arrival. I will keep this frequency open for communication. Do you copy?

Copy that, Dr. Radio me every four hours and let me know your situation - or sooner, if your situation changes.

Repeat, how many of you are there - staff and patients?

"HELLO!! ANYONE?!!"

There's an outside chance there might still be some cops at the station. Seems like a good enough place to hide out and, maybe, find a real weapon.

"My name's Marlowe! JOE MARLOWE! If anyone else is here, I'm heading for the police station".

Now, I've only gotta hope all my shouting doesn't attract the wrong kind of attention . . .

Turn Four

Special Events: Survival of the fittest. The few survivors of the plague have gone through a trial by fire. This might be something about their past, their physique, or an ability to adapt to the devastation of society. To reflect this, all characters gain 1 point of which they can increase one ability (attack, defense or investigate) or increase their hit points.

The Creeping Abomination moves to the University, gathering the remains of the dead as it slithers and crawls across the city.

Alex Western finds the only Surgeon's Tools in Watch City! A group of undead attack the occultist, but he manages to escape in time. The undead fail to attack.

Jove Jones does not find anything of use in the Hospital, but she does rescue Dr. Neville. The undead fail to attack.

Joe Marlowe moves to the CBD and finds an Expensive Suit. The undead swarm on Joe - the horror . . . the horror - but the mechanic manages to escape.

Manny Cestus moves to the Military Base and finds a Grenade. The undead attack Manny as he leaves a supply depot, but being used to gang attacks, he defends himself.

Bernard Black drives to the Docks, and along the way has a governmental inspection (nvestigates) of the Hospital and finds a First Aid Kit. The undead in the Docks fail to attack him.

Johnny Bravo moves to the Hospital and finds a First Aid Kit. The undead fail to attack.

Jarek Mace finds a Torch in the CBD. The undead fail to attack.

Jack Frost loves the smell of napalm in the morning and burns all the undead in the CBD with his Flamethrower. The undead fail to attack.

Did I hear some homeless man shouting at me in the CBD? Fortunately I managed to escape in this car...

Now I finally get to the docks after having to sleep off my hangover in the back seat for a turn, and what do I find? Zombies. Brilliant. Just what I need.
Oh. Bugger.
