But the genre makes a difference. They would not make the same choices for a sci-fi movie as they would for a historical.
Hollywood slots movies into a genre, then lets the genre dictate the style choices. If it's sci-fi action adventure, then the target audience is presumed to be adolescent males, and the content of the movie is designed to that end. If it's a Tutor historical/romance, the target audience is presumed to be adult to middle aged women, and the content is designed to that end.
It's not that they can't do it any other way. It's that they don't want to. They like being able to predict their return on their investment. Which means they don't make daring or unusual choices. They won't make a movie with a marginal target audience.
(In many ways, LOTR was a one-of-a-kind phenomenon. The size of it's fan base was bankable, and allowed a lot of lattitude in other directions.)
