OVER OR UNDER? PAPER TOWELS AND TOILET PAPER

Post by TIC TAC »

Okay this may seem like a stupid question (yes even I can tell if something seems stupid or not  ) but which way does the paper go if the roll is mounted vertically?
Personally if it’s horizontal I mount the TP overhand. Never made much sense to me to do it any other way. I mean; why reach under and behind to get at the end of the roll? Yet I see it that way in many places. If you watch the Simpsons you know that the paper towel rack in the kitchen has the roll hung underhand. I don't know if Matt Groening is making a joke or not. Anyway we could debate the over/under aspect till time grinds to a halt but there is one thing I've never been able to decide. If the roll is hung vertically which way should it go? Left or Right? What are we to do?

I don't care, left or right, over or under. As long as it spins, I'm happy.

I switch often between having my paper towel unwind from the left and the right. I can't seem to determine which is the more efficient orientation. It may depend on whether I use one or both hands to acquire the desired sheet of towel. There could be other variables at play, such as what use I intend the sheet of towel for, or what television program happens to be on when I go to grab a sheet. But that's pure speculation on my part. I ultimately agree with CovenantJr, of course: no matter what direction the roll spins, as long as I obtain my piece of towel without incident, I have no worries.

Over for me. I find that more is used/wasted when mounted in under orientation. Also, over makes for easier one-handed operation.

I ussually just have the roll sitting on my counter next to the Throne, and a stack of comics for reading. But to answer the question, I tear overhand, with my right.

I'm with Balon (not actually with in in the can...!)
We have two bathrooms in the house, and no TP holders.
They just sit either on the back of the toilet or on the floor.

I thought I was the only one not to use a TP holder. I leave the roll on the sink to the left of the toilet.

There was an episode of The Simpsons when the child protective services people come and they are going through everything that is wrong with Marge's house, listing different things. One of them says something to the effect of "...toilet paper hung in unacceptable overhand fashion" so now I think about that at least once a month.

In any case, I guess I prefer the paper to come out the back. I don't know this vertical nonsense! But when it comes down in front, it's easier for a little kid or someone to undo the whole roll... at least that's the rationale I've heard for it.

...and what about people reading in the washroom...I don't get it.

Why do people take books, or crossword puzzles or magazines and stuff.

I prefer to get in get it out, and then get out myself...I can think of much more pleasant places to read.

Perhaps not everyone is as fiber-conscious as you, Drew. :)

For horizontally-mounted toilet paper rolls, I always replace them in the overhand position. Since I'm the only one who seems capable of replacing empty rolls... they tend to all be overhanders.

For vertically-mounted toilet paper rolls, I would uninstall and reinstall in a horizontal orientation... side-winding TP sounds dangerously avant garde to this left-handed person who is forced to survive in a predominantly right-handed world.

Hahahaha! Thanks a lot, danlo...you almost made me choke on my chocolate bar (which I recognize is not the ideal choice for fibre). The Destroyer series: a bathroom classic indeed!

Actually, I would agree with drew if the scenario was a public washroom. No way I'm spending anymore time in there than is absolutely necessary.

Why not just sit in a more comfortable chair; with your pants on?

If it takes you more than two or three minutes to do your business; you DO need more fiber in your diet.

I think for me there ussually a constant barage of stuff going on in my house, people listening to music, cleaning, talking or watching the boob tube. So the bathroom is ussually one of the only silent places inside the house, besaue more often than not it's raining here, and the outside is unavailable.

I dont know what all the rest of your excuses are! ;)
