Funny movies

Post by Zarathustra »

Okay, I haven't searched the archives to see if this has been done already. But since humor is subjective, and we're giving advice on funny movies, I thought we should establish a baseline so that others can know if their sense of humor matches the person who is giving the advice.

I haven't put enough thought into it to actually create a "Top 10 List," but off the top of my head, in no particular order . . .

Some movies that made me laugh:

South Park: BLU
Airplane
Team America
Anchorman
Naked Gun (most of the series)
Blazing Saddles
Spongebob (I love that sponge)
Undercover Brother
Napolean Dynamite
Three Amigos
Ghost Busters

And now I'm drawing a blank. A little help?

Movies that don't make me laugh:

Adam Sandler movies
Monty Python movies (sorry, they were funny 20 years ago when I was a teenager. No longer.)

well, right away, I will disagree with malik. In no particular order, mine are:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (still holds up, and there's nothing like it)
Zoolander
Arsenic and Old Lace
Raising Arizona
Amelie (romantic comedy)
Emperor's New Groove
Dr. Strangelove ...
5th Element
Love and Death
Airplane
Top Secret

However I do agree that I (personally) cannot find Adam Sandler funny.

Spies Like Us

Monty Python ceased being funny right around the time I left college.

We're not in as much disagreement as you think. I forgot about Zoolander, Raising Arizona, Top Secret, and Emperor's New Groove.

And that reminds me: The Big Lebowski

Crap, I forgot about Mel Brooks.

Young Frankenstein, and of course the funniest movie of all time...

Blazing Saddles.

How could I have forgotten Dumb and Dumber! That's got to go in my top 5! And I might as well put the two Ace Ventura in my top 20 or 30.

Clerks and Clerks 2 get honorable mentions, as well. I love Kevin Smith's mixture of crude, witty, and sappy humor.

Also, I laughed at 40 Year Old Virgin, but not consistently all the way through.

I still think Kentucky Fried Movie is the funniest. Where else do you get such classics as 'Catholic High School Girls In Trouble', 'Armageddon Now', 'Cleopatra Schwartz', and 'Fistful Of Yen'?

Yeah, based on "Fistful of Yen", KFM rocks.

Army of Darkness still keeps me laughing after numerous viewings. The idea of undead skeletons screaming in fear of anything is just hysterical to me.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

I agree with Zucker bros. stuff Airplane etc.
Holy Grail is classic.
I'm still quoting stuff from Team America..but not to my kid. Heh. "Are you sure there isn't some other way to prove my loyalty?"

What about Fast Times at Ridgemont High?
or
Duck Soup
M*A*S*H*
Bringing Up Baby
Bananas
Cat Ballou
The Princess Bride
Liar, Liar
O' Brother Where Art Thou?
the end credits to Me, Myself and Irene (the movie sucked)
or the edited flubs at the end of Toy Story?

Stiller makes me so nervous I can't watch him...never saw the point to Albert Brook's humor and will not watch anything with Adam Sandler, Chris Farley or Will Farrell in it.

oh and Innerspace is hilarious too!

Yeah, Liar Liar was great. Never seen MASH, got to put that in my queue.

Cohen Brothers' movies always have some part in them that make me laugh, though I don't think of them as comedies.

Urgh, i hate Zoolander.
But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.
We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And we're definitely going to hell, but we'll have all the best stories to tell.

You can't beat a Cohen Brother movie for clever, extremely funny characters, situations and lines. Even their darker movies like Blood Simple have me in hysterics at times. The Big Lebowski is my absolute number 1, though.

I liked Cable Guy, Dogma, Beverly Hills Cop 1, The Life of Brian (far better than The Holy Grail imo)...and most of my other fave's have already been mentioned.

As an aside, I have to say that the thing that's got me laughing the most at the moment is the TV series Rescue Me. It's obviously not a film, nor does it fall in to the catagory of sit-com, but it is unbelievably funny. They could probably do some feature length versions of it.
It'd take you a long time to blow up or shoot all the sheep in this country, but one diseased banana...could kill 'em all.

I didn't even know sheep ate bananas.
