What's for Lunch/Brunch?

Post by Menolly »

Heh. We already have WFB and WFD, may as well start a WFL thread.

I know when I was in the work force, a goodly amount of my salary went towards buying lunch each day. And from what I've seen, at least here in Florida, that is fairly common. Kids may have lunch bags they carry lunch in to school, but it was rare I saw lunch bags or even small coolers in the workplace.

So...what is your workday (and weekend) lunchtime habit? Do you invest a bit more of your salary on eating out when you're working? Interested in changing your habits? Let's get started!

Today I had a DAK brand sliced ham and smoked provolone cheese sandwich on honey wheat bread with mayonnaise, Guldens spicy brown, and fresh cracked black pepper. A slice of sweet onion on top. Along with that were some celery sticks and about an ounce of blue cheese dressing to dip them into. Nice frosted beer mug filled with ice cold whole milk alongside.

Mmmm...

At least you're not going out and spending $6.50 or more a day at places like Wendy's or such, Tom. Does your workplace have a kitchen or at least a microwave where you can heat premade items up in?

Heh. I believe I'd be spending at least that 6.50 to 10.50 every day if I could afford it. I'm lovin the Wendys/BKTaco Bell and especially Quiznos for lunch. I guess I'm lucky I bought a house a while ago and I'm still settling into the increased mortage payments. Once I start making some headway lookout! :-)

But, let's go with the high end of that range you just posted. If it's a typical five day work week that you would be spending $10.50 a day for lunch on, that's $52.50 a week out of pocket for lunch alone. Divided by 40 hours, you just reduced your salary by $1.32 (give or take) an hour. I admit I always worked as unskilled labor, but I never earned a raise of over a dollar an hour in my life. I couldn't justify the expense, regardless of what my other expenses are.

Of course you are right. It is a major expense and for what? Frankly I generally bring my lunch to work and eat at my desk . When my wife cooks I bring some wonderful leftovers and short of that I make sandwiches and so on. Much more economical than eating out every day. I do enjoy getting out of the office though. If I ever become a department head that needs to have lunch with clients the company will foot the bill as a business expense. *crosses fingers*

Ah...ye old "expense account." Hyperception loves traveling to symposiums in his field to present papers on his field of study, if only for the "per diem" he's alotted for meals.

:::truthfully, he enjoys the networking as well:::

Today I had leftover chicken and tatties and brussel sprouts, I had a salad packed too but our tiny fridge sometimes is unpredictable and it froze the lettuce which was very unpleasant to bite into....I ended up chucking the leftover salad.

I don't bother with lunch myself. Too lazy to make it before hand, and too lazy to get up while at work and go and get something.

I'll usually have sandwiches when I get home to tide me over until dinner.

I usually do what Jenn said she did yesterday, and reheat leftovers from the previous night's dinner, unless I specifically cooked the entree with planned overs in mind. However, since I have been doing a lot of freezer and pantry cooking lately, we've been pretty much finishing what I cook for dinner each night. So, the need for creativity at lunch time most likely produced my desire to create this thread, as well as the discussion of cost factor, and just being on the same wavelength as LF. :)

::jumping up and done with joy:::

Despite the constant complaints from Beorn last night regarding the pesto sauce on the angel hair pasta (capellini is his favorite with marinara and he had never tried pesto before) he has microwaved the leftovers and is now eating them for lunch! HA! If that doesn't speak louder than words. heheheheh...

Now to figure out what my lunch shall be...

Chef Boyardee beef ravioli has always been my favorite.
You have to stove top it though.
And overcook it so it's soft and broken up like a Pâté.
hmm............ :grinlove:

(nuke it and it becomes a nasty foodlike product, imo)

Add some buttered toast or a toasted english muffin on the side and you have one of my favorite meals.

I've got to go to Best Buy over lunch to pick up some cables. Near there is a Quizno's and a Hooters. I think some hot wings for lunch might hit the spot.
