The World of Eiran

The Abyss
The Abyss is the general name for all the cracks that mar Eiran's reality, although it should only be properly used when speaking of the large gap in southern Eiran. As far as even the wisest know, there is no "bottom" to the Abyss, and it is not merely a great crevice; rather, it is a door to a dark dimension, a void perhaps, which is in no way deserted. Creatures live there, and very often they attempt to emerge from the Abyss to wreak havoc upon the world of Eiran. However, the edges of the Abyss are lined with Icewalls of unknown origins which, under ordinary circumstances, ensure that the creatures of the Abyss do not spill into the world. From time to time, however, these Icewalls are cracked or broken; though they always repair themselves with time, the cracks can allow access to the world for the denizens of the Abyss, and it requires that the people from Eiran drive them back or exterminate them while the crack repairs itself. Very rarely, a large part of the Icewalls crumbles and a full-scale invasion happens; these invasions lead to widespread war, and are known as the Abyssal Wars. There are records of only six thus far, on average every five hundred years or so. The last one was about four hundred years ago.

Crossing the Abyss
Since there are parts of Eiran that are entirely surrounded by the Abyss, it is fortunate that ways exist of crossing the Abyss. There are, in fact, many different ways to do so, though each of them has both advantages and disadvantages. Some of the most common are:
The Moonbridges: These five bridges appear to be made out of moonlight, they emerge from strange crystalline structures placed on the edge of the Abyss in correspondence with permanent tunnels through the Icewalls. Both the making of these permanent tunnels and of the Moonbridges themselves are lost secrets by now. The bridges are wide enough for ten people to walk side by side, and so are a very good commodity for trade purposes; furthermore, those who cross the Abyss on Moonbridges are not attacked by its denizens, since the light somehow repels them (although if one is foolish enough to be goaded out of the Moonbridge...). One end of each Moonbridge is always controlled by a town - and all these towns seem to be as old as the Moonbridges themselves.
Drakes: Drakes are faithful and useful steeds, often used to cross the Abyss by those who can afford them. They are flying reptiles somewhat resembling the dragons of legend, but about as intelligent as horses. They possess great endurance, and can usually be ridden by one or two people at most. This, unfortunately, makes them unusable for trade purposes in most cases. Drakes can be attacked by denizens of the Abyss, and they are somewhat expensive, so it's unlikely for a farmer to be able to afford one.
Airships: Dwarrow airships are one of the favored means of transportation apart from Moonbridges. They resemble ships surmounted by a hot-air balloon, and propelled by an engine which is fueled by a mysterious mixture known as "Smegensrat", whose recipe is a dwarrow secret. Airships, depending on their size, can carry many people and goods, making them ideal for trade routes outside Moonbridges; they are also used as ferries for those who can't afford other means of crossing - usually for a modest fee. Airships can be attacked by denizens of the Abyss, but they usually are well defended by dwarrows, and the Smegensrat can be used as a defensive weapon as well, if need be, being poured or blasted onto an attacker. However, airships are tightly controlled by a dwarrow guild, which exercises a virtual monopoly over them.
Pelendra, the Soaring City: Pelendra is one of the most stunning sights of all of Eiran. It is nothing less than its name says - a whole city which does not lie on the ground or in the sea, but floats in the air. It is built upon what appears to be a reversed mountaintop, or perhaps an uprooted stone island; however, devices and contraptions of unknown origin seem to emerge and disappear again in the stone. Though their use is mostly unknown or forgotten, it is known that the city of Pelendra has defenses capable of shooting lightning bolts at attackers. As such, it crosses the Abyss with relatively little to fear. It is also used as a ferry or as transportation for caravans, if need be - the city only requires a modest tax to take up passengers, although those who create trouble in the city while crossing the Abyss might be dropped out of Pelendra without problems. However, Pelendra's wandering through Eiran is apparently random - or else it follows a pattern established long ago for an unknown purpose - and it cannot be altered, so it may be simply a matter of luck that the city might pass exactly where one might need it.

A strange aura slowly pervades central Imray, causing most to feel uneasy and as if the land itself did not welcome them. Worshipers of Calais and uKulwa seem to be immune, as well as the few Giants of Aarklar.

Turn 15 - Summer

Simjen, god of the Forge, emerges from the Mists of Eiran, Manifests and pulls the Imray worldshard close to the Shattered Lands worldshard; then, using the Hammer of Shaping, with his great power he forges a mountain range to seal the wound in the world, joining the two worldshards together, though it is too late by then to save the Malyth worldshard. Simjen's Forging becomes known as Simjen's Cataclysm as well, as the blows of the Hammer necessarily lead to earthquakes, tidal waves, and hundreds of thousands of dead mortals. Yet in the end, the two worldshards are joined again for the first time since the Second Age.

Moxinomal and Vashitva battle on the edge of the Mists, whereupon Moxinomal somehow manages to defeat Vashitva, whose fate remains unknown. The Jester of Madness enters the Mists.

A small moon appears, orbiting the main moon of Eiran.

The worldshard of Malyth drifts entirely into the Mists, and it is lost.

A red comet is seen streaking through the night sky across most of Eiran. Some believe it to be a spark of Simjen's Forging, others that it is an omen, whether good or ill.

The Paragons who turned to Madadeva find themselves stripped of their powers and weakened into helplessness!

Rothmog slays his beloved wife after she was magically enslaved by Bel's army.

The Unknowable crafts a crystal forest located in the Shattered Lands.

A magical barrier around the edge of the lava flow from Vashitva's volcano causes the lava to be teleported back over the already devastated lands, halting the spread of the lava flow and the destruction of the Shylan desert.

A cataclysm in Imray's desert is felt throughout Eiran and something violently powerful flows into the world. A burning, freezing darkness throbs inside the desert, and a familiar evil echoes through the world.

Armies of the dead rise from underneath Virelle, blackening the sky with their number, and bony dragons with midnight-black wings soar above the ruins of the town.

The Leviathan bellows a mighty challenge beneath the waters, and from the depths of the earth the challenge is heard and answered by a monstrous, gargantuan worm. The two titans struggle against each other, their blood filling the ocean and creating a monstrous maelstrom.

An army of uKulwa's zealots marches on Raathas and claims the city, consecrating it to the Red God.

A crusade is declared by Madadeva's Corruptors against Halideva's Paragons.

A magical barrier around the edge of the lava flow from Vashitva's volcano causes the lava to be teleported back over the already devastated lands, halting the spread of the lava flow and the destruction of the Shylan desert.

Turn 18 - Spring

Argothoth, the Ancient One, rises again from the shards of his previous existence!

The Bleeds, vast expanses of searingly frigid light which blind the gazes of the gods, have appeared in the Shylan desert, eastern Nocturna and central Shaldir!

O-gon-cho and her Radiant Ones stem the tide of Abyss-spawn emerging from the Maw, but are locked into a stalemate!

The Worm is revealed to contain the essence of Melirelle, who bestowed her power and consciousness as a gift to her creation at the end of the Second Age, after her battle with Argothoth; roused from its sleep and forced into a struggle, the Worm called on that power and Melirelle's consciousness awakened, assisting it in defeating Leviathan; soon after, Melirelle claims control and reshapes the Worm to suit her, becoming neither goddess nor mortal, but something entirely different.

The Leviathan is defeated in his battle against the Worm, and soon after he is hunted down and slain by a group of adventurers wishing to get themselves a trophy.

Flurqi, Koel's Prophet, travels to northern Imray and somehow falls to the madness of Moxinomal, defecting to the service of the Jester of Madness!
