What does Valentines Day, mean for you?

Post by thefirst »

Will you be going out to dinner with you sweetheart, wearing scandalous lingerie, pretending it's not happening, or for our oh so practical fellows, giving your wife something she'll really love, like a tool set?

While I don't have a sig other, a network of friends can allow surcease from a day spent hiding under the covers. Do you think secret santa comes from valentine's day? I don't have the guts to sit with friends in the dining hall while they all secretly admire/are secretly admired by each other, so I'll join in and spend the whole day wondering who put the "Be Mine" candy heart at my place. (just a candy heart, no card? cheapskate!)

We don't celebrate it.

Normally, I don't make a big deal about it, because that usually leads to disappointment. Largely due to the fact that my birthday is three days after V-day, so I usually end up feeling short changed on one day or the other. I'm going to forswear, my usual indifference about the holiday this year, and see what happens.

We don't celebrate it because my husband considers it a Christian holiday, as it is named after Saint Valentine.

I have to say, though, I don't really care, either. I suspect that if I did care, we would celebrate it.

It was always fun for me when I was kid, I loved the candy and all the little cards we'd get at school, but the best part was that my mom and I always hung out in the kitchen and baked something, for just the two of us. She found someway to make any holiday sappy, even St. Patrick's Day, I loved that though. But I suppose that's what I love about any holiday, the things we do, and the things that others do for us, to try and show how special we are to each other. Not that holidays are the only times we should do this, I feel that we should show the people we care about, how we feel everyday if we can, and sometimes it's the smallest gestures that make the biggest difference, and they usually don't cost much more than a smile, or a "thank you". :hearts: So sue me, I'm a sentimentalist!

Couldn't care less about it, to be honest.

It means that even though I tell him not to get me anything, he will, so I have to get him something, which sucks because I have no money.

Valentine's Day tends to be a time when I avoid starting any new relationships, because I'm suspiscious of the motives involved. It's kind of like christmas. I don't run in the other direction of possibilities, but I tend to play things a little more slowly around those times of the year.

Meanwhile, my sister, who has a wonderful husband points out that she thinks Valentine's Day is the day for jerks to pretend they're more wonderful than the husbands and boyfriends and lovers who are there for their beloved the rest of the year as well. I find that a humorous interpretation of the holiday. ;) Yes my brother in law still does sweet things for her on Valentine's Day, but he doesn't wait for one day of the year to be appropriately loving.

edit:
I used to go out to the bars and clubs with the few remaining single friends, both women, but they were both married this year, so I haven't figured out what kind of self indulgence I'll do for myself this year, the day is about spoiling someone afterall isn't it?

I love V-Day and my woman and I tend to make a habit of spoiling each other with lots of little things - including the sorta standard flowers and choccies and perfume and brekkie in bed for her :)

Yeah I know there's the "it's just a commercial blah" group out there but I don't care :) Oh and we're living under the same roof this V-Day and beyond so that's going to make it a tad extra special :)

We'll give each other a card, but really I can't stand Valentines day.

It's a commercialised chariacature of what it's supposed to be about, and the restaurants rip you off withan overpriced "special Valentines menu", which usually consists of all the stuff they can't get rid of off their usual menu.

We tend to go out for a meal at a restaurant where we can choose exactly what we want from the whole menu, a week or so after all the madness is over.

We don't need anyone to say this is the day you need to show your wife/husband/partner/whatever just how much youlove them - I tend to think that you should be doing that every day anyway.

So it's a big Bah Humbug!!!!! to Valentines day in this house.

It's just another day designed to take money out of our pockets! So, I'm a cynic!
