Man's Best Friend

Post by onewyteduck »

I've been meaning to start a thread devoted strictly to all things dog for some time now. Why? Because I love dogs! (And it has always bothered me that dogs are of importance in The Land. :( )

I actually collect sayings about dogs.....this is my favorite:
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware,
Of giving your heart to a dog, to tear.

Rudyard Kipling

I wrote a few haikus dedicated to my dog. They're tongue in cheek sort of things. Enjoy:

Dog: (N) 1. Destroyer Of Clean

In the swamp you have
taken your time because
you smell terrible.

Dog: (N) 2. Purveyor Of Bad Breath

When I say come here,
I do not mean for your breath
to be in my face.

Dog: (N) 3. Bringer Of Happiness

Your tail wags quickly:
side to side to side to side;
I am happy too.

Dog: (N) 4. Slayer Of Plastic

Do not look at me
with innocent eyes because
proof lies with the toy.

I'm hoping this means they shoud live longer? If so, that's beautiful!

I love that! Thanks for sharing!

One of the animals a which a generous and sociable man would soonest become is a dog. A dog can have a friend; he has affections and character; he can enjoy equally the field and the fireside; he dreams, he caresses, he propiates; he offends and is pardoned; he stands by you in adversity; he is a good fellow.

Having recently experienced the truth of Rudyards quote,, i swore not to set myself up for that again. Yet,, i find myself surfing the Puppys for sale sites on the internet. I wonder, how or if,, a canine experiences the same when it looses a master..

here's Riverdog (Molly), lazing away at our river house after a day of running, swimming and leaping off the dock with the kids.

I believe dogs experience sadness. But then I think dogs have alot more going on than we humans, in our arrogance, want to give them credit for. Just my opinion.

Every time one of us approaches Poppy our 2lb Chihuahua she acts as if she is grateful that we are not going to eat her.

If you approach Ice, our 115 lb. (and on a diet, poor pooch!) lab/collie/huskie mix, he just wants to know if you have anything TO eat!

RIP Bella & Maddie :(

Rescued dog rescues her family from fire at the cost of her life

WINONA, MINN. -- Bella, a 3-year-old golden retriever/collie mix rescued as an abused puppy, returned the favor by alerting her owners to a fire in their house.

With help from Maddie, a 6-month-old golden retriever, Bella helped get Sue Feuling and her daughter, Mckenzie, 9, out of the house last week. The dogs didn't make it.

Bella had jumped on Feuling's bed early Friday morning and started barking, and Feuling then smelled smoke, grabbed her daughter and rushed out of the house.

But she couldn't coax the dogs out of the house. "Bella must have thought Mckenzie was still in the house," she said.

"Those dogs were without a doubt the heroes," said Winona Assistant Fire Chief Jim Multhaup. The fire, which was caused by an overloaded electrical outlet, gutted the house, he said.

An assistance fund has been set up, but Sue Feuling said she was only thinking about her dogs. "Everything I lost is nothing compared to them," she said.

Our family has an airedale terrier mix back in NJ. The dog below is an airedale mixed with a schnauzer (sp?) which I have long suspect is Cocoa's (my dog's) other half.

However, I know one of my friends, who knows a lot more about dogs than I do, said that there's something about the way cocoa walks (she moves the two right legs together and then the two left legs together, rather than right front with left back and left front with right back) that is usually exclusive to a few breeds of dogs or something. Can't remember any of them though.

Well anyway, she's about 10 now, I've been told she's surprisingly energetic for her age but she's definitely getting tuckered out easier :( Last year, there were days when she wouldn't come up to the door to receive the affection due to her when I got home.

Awww@the puppies

My dog currently lives with my mom since my apartment won't allow dogs. Here is Baby; she was found in a box on the side of the highway as a puppy.

I dunno. I don't really like doggy clothing but...I wonder if there are some good dog shoes around. In the winter, the town spreads a lot of salt around for ice melting and it irritates her paws. Also, ice will sometimes get lodged between her paw pads. These irritants together actually cause her to lick her paws raw during the winter season a lot and I wish there was a good way to avoid it.

They make them. Here's an example from the PetSmart site....I'm sure all the others have them too.

Here is Poppy (Chihuahua) and Tippy (Shi-Tzu). Aside from the occasional shredding of a roll of toilet paper or piddling out of bounds they are awesome dogs.
