Baby names

Post by Fist and Faith »

If you were having a baby, what would you name it? And no, I'm not going to be a father again. I just know somebody who is pregnant, and am trying to help.

We need to know the last name in order to judge this question. For example if the last name was Mellow I would not suggest to name the kid Marcia.

Fist, it's a lot easier to give suggestions of names not to use. I see lots of poor children's names. Ask them to not use any "creative misspelling" names - you know, where parents deliberately misspell names "just to be different". Other names that always bug me are things like Precious, Miracle, Princess etc. Another poor one that I've seen a few of is Nevaeh - "heaven", but backwards. The absolute best name I've seen, though was Espn. 'Cause, ya know, that was the dad's favorite TV channel.

It's especially important to not give a boy a name that can be ridiculed or perverted.

Maolbheanachta (mal-vuh-knock-tuh), or Mal, for short. For the less brave, there's Malchijah.

A pretty interesting tool to check online is the Name Voyager.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

A girl would be Aliyah Rhiannon.
A boy, Gryphon Sinclair.

I have a friend who named his son "Griffin." I asked him if he knew what a griffin was and he said he didn't know it was anything other than a name for a boy. After I explained it to him, he said he would have never named his son that if he'd known!

That's not so strange, there are a lot of people in this area whose last name is Griffin

I went to high school with a kid named Talon. I always thought that was a cool name.

Heh.
That is not the case here.
I even chose the alternative spelling.

Coolest name I've ever heard was a guy in my high school. His name was Toroff Hocabu (hock-a-boo). It sounds really cool but it was a very unusual name.

I'll get back to you on this one.

Good advice. I'll tell her to come to the Watch and check out this thread. :D

An odd reaction, imho! Knowing what it means makes it even better!

I knew a boy with that name several years ago. He was about my son's age. A real rough-n-tumble kid, too! I always thought it was cool. I used to see him around at McDonald's and the park. He had a younger sister named Kestra, which ain't bad either. But best of all was a younger brother. I hadn't seen them in many months, and I asked the baby's name. She said "Thor." I said, "Like the God of Thunder??" She said yes, so I ran home quick and got one of my Mjolnir necklaces for him. I told her nobody with that name should grow up without Mjolnir! Heh.

We wanted our son to have a timeless name, so we chose David. The runner-ups were Michael and Joseph, but there were so many in my husband's family that he probably would have been the 583298753987th Joe or Mike. Oh, and I seriously pushed for Indiana Jones, but that didn't happen. ;)

For a girl we liked my name: Jasmine. We also liked Lorraine which is my husband's grandmother's name.

The most unusual name I've come across was my friend from middle school. He was a second generation Swede and his name was Thor.

An important factor in nameing someone, is trying not to be too trendy; but not obscure.

Remember-this will be their NAME!!!!

Nameing them something that'll sound cool as a baby (Apple for example...?) is a little hard to live down as an adult.
I thought you were a ripe grape
a cabernet sauvignon
a bottle in the cellar
the kind you keep for a really long time
