"I don't know what else is down there besides the walking skeletons, I only have what the surviving guards told me."

"Master Roland, is it possible for us to interview the surviving guards ourselves? The more direct information we have before deciding how to proceed the better, I think."

"Magical monsters," muttered Xavier under his breath. "I told you so..."

Sighing, he continued more audibly..."an excellent idea. Let us speak to the guards. But first Master Roland, let me raise the delicate matter of payment...What will you offer us for clearing out your mine? And how soon after doing so will you be able to provide the shipment of silver for the smith?

"There was a shipment of silver ready to be removed from the mine when it was shut down. If you clear the mine for us, you can have any silver you find down there. Any silver you don't want we will buy off you at full market value so we can fulfill our other obligations.

You'll be able to take your silver to the blacksmith yourself.

You can speak to the guards yourself but I don't see the value in it. You said you were pressed for time so you don't want to dilly dally speaking to them."

Xavier nodded. "I think I'd prefer to get some information from the people who experienced it firsthand all the same.

If you could point us toward the guards, or summon their captain perhaps so that we can question him, we would appreciate it. Immediately thereafter, I think we will be willing to take up your offer."

"It's all up to you now. I've given you all the information you need to get the job done. Your reward is part of the job's completion.

I'm not pulling the guards from their duties, we have few enough as it is. If you want to waste your time finding the guards involved and talking to them, then that's up to you, but they've been sworn to secrecy as well, and I doubt you'll get any more out of them.

Thank you very much, it's been a pleasure talking to you, but I'm a busy man. The guard will see you to the door."

The guard who escorted you here leads you all back out to the main entrance hall of the Merchants' guild hall and then stands barring the way into the back rooms.

The clerk watches as you return "Get what you were after, did you?"

"Half-way my friend, and thanks. Could you tell us where we can find one of the guards who was down the mine when the disaster happened?"

I'm afraid I've no idea which guards went down into the mine to investigate the problems down there. The whole thing was arranged in a hurry and there was a lot of confusion due to the nature of the situation.

There are no records of it, so I can't help you there."

"It seems Master Roland spoke truth; that the guards were sworn to secrecy and we would waste valuable time seeking them out.

"As of now, I agree with Brother Charn. Let whatever we meet 'speak for itself.'"

Irian turned to the clerk. "Is there someone who could guide us to the silver mine? Or is is easy enough to find on our own?"

Muttering "Sworn to secrecy...makes no sense..." Xavier stepped out of the hall ahead of the rest of the party.

The clerk responds "follow the cart tracks, they'll lead you straight to the mines. The silver mine is the one that's been closed up."

You all follow Xavier outside and you catch the tail end of his conversation with one of the guards stationed outside.

"I'm sure the master you spoke to, if you did speak to one, will have given you all the information you need."

Xavier turned resignedly to the rest of the party..."Fine bloody lot this bunch. Happy to let us clear out their infested mine, but not too keen on giving us an even chance by telling us anything important about what we're up against."

He shrugged. "Sod it. I give up. Off to the bloody mine."

He turned on his heel and strode off...then halted suddenly.

"Somebody who knows the way please?" he asked bitterly.

...talk about being in a bloody hurry, Irian thinks to herself.

"We're on our own, apparently, and according to the clerk in the hall, are to follow the cart tracks. It seems the mines are all in the same general location. We will know the silver mine as being the only one that is boarded up."

Irian turned towards Brother Charn, "I know nothing of the 'walking dead." But I will pledge my support in your battle against them in any way I can, for as long as we travel together."

[does anyone want to do anything in town before you head to the mines?]

Irian glances around at the small settlement, her eyes alighting upon the only other building that is not a shack or living space that the party has not already visited. Gerald's Goods.

"I need a few things I did not bring with me in my haste to leave home," she calls out to the others. "The cart tracks are easy enough to follow. If no one else needs anything, feel free to go on and investigate the exterior of the mine. I'll catch you all up shortly."

"I can wait until we're done I guess. Clerics first when facing the undead..."

He gestured for Brother Charn to take the lead up the trail.

The party follows a pair of well-maintained iron railings away from the camp and up a hill. A mine carts containing freshly dug-out metals comes past you in the opposite direction.

After about 10 minutes you come to a spot where the rails split into three. The track heading to the left leads to a dark mine entrance which has been boarded up and "NO ENTRY" painted onto the boards.

The other two tracks lead into open mine mouths and you can hear the sounds of activity from inside. There are guards stationed outside both of the open mines.
