I think Pam did a great work... the characters don't know that they are "1st level characters" and so they act without think on the numbers like some players and master do... i'm that kind of person too because if i were Pam i had not used the detect magic... but Irian saw those "special items" and thought that they could hide something more...

To a player, that would be like presenting a shiny new Lamborghini Testarossa to a teenager who just got his drivers license. It can happen, but it just isn't <done> .
To a character, however, there is no such analysis - things are things. But, character reactions/expectations might also depend on how rare magical items are in Nathan's campaign world, right?
