matrixman wrote:I very much agree that Tasha Yar deserved a better death. The perfunctory nature of it was quite unnerving. I really don't know what the behind-the-scenes politics were between the actress and the show's writers. I do hope Denise Crosby didn't actually hate her character. But you could be well be right that somebody really hated Tasha, since her ignominious death is just the kind that would be written for a character who was not liked at all. To be honest, I didn't see nearly enough TNG episodes featuring Tasha to have a strong opinion of her either way, but did she do anything on the show that would have merited hatred? From fans or the actress herself?

Yeah, this thread is spinning way off course. Navigator to the bridge! :P
What's this thread about? Oh yes, who is the captain...

Anyway, I think a look-see at the ratings for the show both before and after she died might reveal something - like the before and after shots in ads for diet products.

Is the presence of a security chief, aka Warf, needed because Picard's so old and Kirk was so loose?

By the way, Kirk did not defeat Trelaine, he was saved by the fact that Trelaine's parents appeared on the scene.

And Picard never "beat" Q.

(Standing up and performing the "Picard Manuever") As Cail pointed out, it was a collapsing scaffolding that killed Kirk, not Soran.

I'm pretty sure I pointed out that what I called the "bridge" killed Kirk. Maybe Cail said it too. But then you have to ask who caused it to collapse.

And didn't Picard get one over on Q at least once in a while?

Not even the time when Q was reduced to human status and became a member of the crew as punishment?

Picard had little to do with this, other than taking advantage of Q's sudden vulnerability. In fact, he even went so far as to protect Q from the other vengeful aliens.

What a let-down, even if unintentional!

Yeah, but they had to rationalize it. "It's a perfectly good shuttle."

You don't beat someone like Q. You do pass his tests, if you can. Picard failed just once, and he was given a chance to see how wrong he was.

I don't have a favorite Captain. I like them all equally, each in there own way. Kirk was the cowboy (riding off into the sunset, since Westerns were so prevalent in the 60's), Picard the gentleman (in the new, enlightened ST, what did you expect?) Sisko was grounded and bombastic (what else would one want in a war zone?), and Janeway ... I think Kirk would have tried and failed with her (take that, Cail). I forgot Archer ... I take it back. I didn't like Archer, and I wanted to.

Archer was an embarrassment. Pike would have had him for lunch, Kirk would have laughed himself silly, even Picard would have considered him a joke, Sisko wouldn't have wasted time dealing with him, and Janeway would have smacked him so hard he would have ended up in the Zulu Quadrant.
